Coverage commonly repeated a claimed rating of 650,000 volts. That was a product claim, not independently published evidence of effectiveness, incapacitation, or safety. How was the case designed to work?
Contemporary descriptions mention an electrode cover and a safety switch intended to help prevent accidental activation. Those features describe the design; they do not show that accidental discharge or injury was impossible. A Los Angeles Times reporter who tried the device described an intense sensation and temporary difficulty moving her arm. That is an account of one person’s experience, not a clinical finding or a general measure of how the device affects people. Was the Yellow Jacket actually available for iPhone 5?
Yes, according to contemporaneous reporting, although the reports describe different stages and prices. What were the practical drawbacks?
The Los Angeles Times described the assembled phone and case as about one inch thick. Its hands-on account also noted that the case was not water-resistant and that it interfered with the camera flash. The design therefore added a charging function and a stun-gun feature at the cost of a bulky phone and compromises in ordinary camera and weather use.

Safety and legality require more than the product’s old claims
A claimed voltage rating and a safety switch are not substitutes for training or current safety guidance.
