Xubuntu 22.04 LTS, codenamed Jammy Jellyfish, was released on April 21, 2022. It shipped with Xfce 4.16 and a broader application stack than Xubuntu 20.04. Xubuntu’s original flavor-support promise lasted three years, ending in April 2025; therefore, that support window has elapsed for readers in 2026. Ubuntu’s separate five-year lifecycle statement does not automatically extend to Xubuntu.

What’s new in Xubuntu 22.04?

The Xubuntu team presented 22.04 as an LTS release focused on a newer Xfce desktop, a broader default application set, and accumulated maintenance improvements. The headline comparison was with Xubuntu 20.04, while users upgrading from 21.10 were told to expect additional stability from maintenance releases during the development cycle.

Do not replace that statement with Ubuntu’s general 22.04 lifecycle. Ubuntu’s release notes describe five years of maintenance updates through April 2027 for Ubuntu Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core, and three years for remaining flavors, with possible additional Extended Security Maintenance coverage. Those categories do not establish a five-year support guarantee for Xubuntu 22.04 or identify which Xubuntu packages, if any, receive post-period maintenance.

Available release documentation does not establish the precise Xubuntu-specific security status after April 2025. Before installing or continuing to run it, consult the current official Xubuntu lifecycle documentation and Ubuntu’s current support guidance for a supported target and upgrade route.

How is Xubuntu 22.04 support different from Ubuntu 22.04 LTS?

Question Xubuntu 22.04 Ubuntu 22.04 general lifecycle statement
Original release date April 21, 2022 April 21, 2022 release family
Desktop environment Xfce 4.16 Ubuntu’s own desktop product and components
Original flavor support Three years, through April 2025 Not a Xubuntu-specific promise
Five-year period through April 2027 Not established for Xubuntu Applies in the cited Ubuntu notes to Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core
Post-April-2025 Xubuntu maintenance Current status not established here Ubuntu documentation discusses broader product and ESM categories

The practical distinction is important: “Ubuntu 22.04 LTS” and “Xubuntu 22.04” share a base release, but flavor support terms and package coverage must be checked separately.

What version of Xfce does Xubuntu 22.04 use?

Should you install or upgrade to Xubuntu 22.04 in 2026?

Treat Xubuntu 22.04 as an older release whose stated flavor-support period ended in April 2025. The available documentation does not verify a current Xubuntu-supported upgrade target, post-period security coverage, or the latest 22.04 installation media for 2026.

  1. Check the current official Xubuntu release and lifecycle pages.
  2. Confirm whether the intended machine can upgrade directly to a currently supported Xubuntu release or requires an intermediate step.
  3. Back up personal data and verify application compatibility before changing releases.
  4. If creating installation media, use the image and instructions published on the current official Xubuntu download page; a USB flash drive is only a generic installation-media aid, not a required Xubuntu product.

Where to check release-specific issues

Use Xubuntu’s flavor-specific release notes for Xubuntu changes, known issues, updates, and changelogs. Ubuntu’s common release notes cover shared packages and generic issues inherited by flavors. The two documentation sets answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.

The Bottom Line

Xubuntu 22.04 delivered Xfce 4.16 and an expanded software stack on April 21, 2022, but its originally stated three-year flavor-support period ended in April 2025. In 2026, verify current Xubuntu lifecycle and upgrade documentation rather than applying Ubuntu’s separate five-year wording to Xubuntu.
