XnView MP is a cross-platform image viewer and organizer for Windows, macOS and Linux. It can browse and compare images, make basic edits, manage metadata, rename files in batches and convert images. It reads more than 500 formats, including HEIC/HEIF, AVIF, JPEG XL and camera RAW files. It is free for personal and qualifying educational or nonprofit use; company use requires a paid license.
What XnView MP does
XnView MP brings image browsing, organization and basic editing together in one desktop application. You can inspect folders using thumbnails or a filmstrip, view images full-screen, create slideshows and contact sheets, sort files, compare images, and look for duplicates. Its editing and management tools include resizing, cropping, rotation, color adjustments and EXIF/IPTC/XMP metadata editing.
The official overview describes XnView MP alongside XnView Classic as a free image viewer that opens and edits major formats. The dedicated XnView MP feature page lists more than 500 formats read natively and about 70 formats written.
Which image formats can it open?
XnView MP handles common image formats as well as specialist and camera formats. The official format listings include JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, PSD, DICOM and PDF, as well as camera RAW, HEIC/HEIF, AVIF and JPEG XL. The full format list is maintained on the official feature page; support can vary by format and application version.

The listed read and write totals are different: more than 500 formats are read natively, while about 70 are listed as writable. Do not assume that every format XnView MP can display is also available as an export format.
How to batch-convert images
Convert a folder in XnView MP
- Open XnView MP and browse to the folder containing the images.
- Select the images to process, or select the folder’s contents as appropriate.
- Choose Tools > Batch convert.
- Set the output format and destination, then configure any available conversion options.
- Start the conversion and check the destination folder for the resulting files.
The official FAQ identifies this command for straightforward folder conversion. XnView MP also supports batch renaming from the viewer.

Use XnConvert for longer processing chains
For workflows that need multiple processing steps, XnView’s companion application, XnConvert, offers more than 80 configurable actions. The FAQ lists actions such as resizing, format conversion, watermarking, text overlays, filters and metadata management. Choose it when you need a more elaborate batch pipeline than a basic conversion.
What editing and organization tools are included?
- Basic image adjustments: resize, rotate, crop, brightness, contrast, gamma, automatic levels and filters.
- Browse and review: thumbnails, filmstrip, fullscreen viewing, slideshows and image comparison. The official feature page says comparison can show up to four images.
- File and collection tasks: sorting, duplicate finding, batch renaming and contact-sheet creation.
- Metadata: view and edit EXIF, IPTC and XMP information; the overview also lists screen capture.
These are useful tools for reviewing and preparing image collections, but the published feature descriptions position XnView MP as a viewer and organizer with basic editing—not as a substitute for a full-featured layered photo editor.

Does XnView MP work on Windows, Mac and Linux?
Yes. The current official download page lists packages for Windows, macOS and Linux. The feature page specifies Windows 10/11, macOS for Intel and Apple Silicon, and Linux DEB, RPM and AppImage packages. Check the current download page for the packages and operating-system support available for your system, since these details can change between releases.
Can you use XnView MP without installing it?
Yes. The official FAQ documents a portable archive option. XnView MP can run from that archive without a conventional installation, and it can store settings beside the executable—a practical arrangement for a USB drive or a shared workstation. The official downloads page also provides Windows ZIP packages alongside its installer; consult the FAQ for the portable setup details.

Is XnView MP free for commercial use?
No. The licensing terms distinguish personal and qualifying organization use from company use. XnSoft says XnView MP is freeware for private use, public entities and educational use, including nonprofit organizations. Use in a company requires a license.
The official download page currently displays €29 for one commercial license and lower per-seat prices for larger quantities. Treat that as the price shown on the page, not a guarantee of a permanent rate; verify the current terms and volume pricing on the official download page before purchasing. The same page offers Windows installer and ZIP downloads, a macOS Universal DMG, and Linux DEB, TGZ and AppImage packages, with SHA-256 checksums.
