XLRI can be worth the cost for a candidate who has a credible path to a post-MBA role, can finance roughly INR 30.5 lakh of tuition plus living costs, and chooses the programme that matches the intended work. The official 2027 admissions page lists tuition of INR 15.25 lakh per year for both PGDM(BM) and PGDM(HRM), with hostel and mess charged separately. XLRI’s latest combined 2024–26 placement report lists a INR 29 lakh median and INR 31.40 lakh average salary, but those outcomes combine both programmes and are not guarantees.
The decision should therefore be made as a risk-adjusted investment: calculate the complete cost, model take-home pay rather than headline compensation, compare the opportunity cost of leaving work, and obtain stream-level placement information before claiming that BM or HRM offers better pay.
Start with the decision, not the brand
XLRI’s two-year PGDM(BM) and PGDM(HRM) programmes are expensive enough that “Is XLRI worth it?” has no universal yes-or-no answer. A strong case exists when you have a realistic target role, sufficient borrowing capacity, and a reasonable probability of completing the programme and securing an offer. The case is weaker when the decision depends on the highest package, assumes immediate repayment from gross salary, or treats BM and HRM as interchangeable.

What the two-year cost really includes
Published tuition
The 2026 XLRI admissions information lists tuition of INR 15.25 lakh per annum for PGDM(BM) and PGDM(HRM). Multiplying the stated annual amount by two gives approximately INR 30.5 lakh in tuition. This is a simple calculation, not a guaranteed final bill: XLRI says fees may be revised, and the admissions page excludes hostel and mess charges.

Build a two-year cash-flow sheet before accepting an offer. Put tuition instalments, hostel, mess, living expenses, travel, equipment, insurance, deposits and loan disbursements in the months when they occur. Add the income you would have earned by staying employed. A candidate earning a modest salary and borrowing heavily can face a much larger economic cost than the INR 30.5 lakh tuition headline suggests.
Opportunity cost is personal
Compare the XLRI option with at least three alternatives: remaining employed for two years, attending a lower-cost management programme, and pursuing a specialized HR qualification while working. For each alternative, record expected savings, salary progression, skill development, network value and the roles realistically available afterward. Do not assign a monetary value to prestige unless it changes a specific recruiting outcome you can verify.

What the placement numbers can—and cannot—prove
XLRI’s final-placement report for the 2024–26 cohort combines BM and HRM. It covers 576 students and reports 145 recruiting organisations, including 25 first-time recruiters. The report states a INR 29 lakh median salary, a INR 31.40 lakh average salary and a 42.5% pre-placement-offer (PPO) rate.

The same report mentions a domestic maximum package of INR 59 lakh. That is an upper-end outcome, not a planning assumption. A financial model based on the maximum package will understate the risk faced by most students. The median is a more useful anchor, but even it is a gross compensation figure: taxes, provident-fund deductions, relocation, variable pay and the time needed to reach the stated salary level affect repayment.
A practical payback model
- Calculate invested cost. Add the two-year tuition at the applicable rate, hostel and mess, living expenses, travel, equipment, insurance, deposits, loan interest and salary forgone.
- Create three compensation cases. Use a conservative case below the reported median, a base case around the INR 29 lakh median, and an optimistic case that does not exceed what you can substantiate from your target role. Keep the INR 31.40 lakh average as context, not a promise.
- Convert salary to usable cash. Estimate taxes and deductions under the tax regime you expect, then subtract rent or relocation, family support, insurance and monthly debt payments.
- Calculate recovery time. Divide total invested cost by annual post-tax cash available for repayment. Run the calculation again if variable compensation is delayed or if you need several months to find a role.
- Stress-test adverse outcomes. Recalculate with a delayed offer, a lower salary, higher living costs and interest accruing during study. If the plan fails under a plausible downside case, reduce borrowing or reconsider the programme.
This approach answers whether the degree is affordable for you; it does not turn a cohort statistic into an individual placement guarantee. XLRI does not publish an individual probability of placement in the information cited here.

Choosing between HRM and BM
When HRM is the better fit
Choose PGDM(HRM) when your target is a people-function career: employee relations, HR systems and practices, labour and employment frameworks, talent or organisational leadership. The curriculum is designed around those areas while providing grounding in other business functions. It is a depth-oriented choice for someone willing to build a career identity in HR rather than using the degree only as a general management credential.
HRM is especially coherent if your previous work, internships or long-term plan point toward employee relations, people analytics, compensation, talent management or HR business partnering. You should still verify the actual role mix offered to the latest cohort instead of assuming every HRM graduate enters the same function.
When BM is the better fit
Choose PGDM(BM) when you want broader mobility across business functions and have not committed to a specialist HR path. Its stated aim is broad functional business competence and self-awareness, which can support targets such as marketing, finance, operations, product, consulting or general management, subject to recruiting demand and your profile.

That breadth can be valuable, but it does not automatically produce a higher salary. The combined placement report cannot establish a BM-versus-HRM pay winner because it does not publish separate outcomes for the two programmes.

Eligibility and the 2027 application calendar
Indian applicants need a recognized bachelor’s degree of at least three years and apply through XAT. NRI, foreign, PIO and OCI applicants may use XAT or GMAT. Both programmes are two years, and XLRI’s 2026 admissions information lists 600 combined seats for PGDM(BM) and PGDM(HRM).

How to prepare for XAT without buying blindly
A physical XAT preparation book can be useful, but no source cited here establishes a single XLRI-endorsed title. Match the edition to the exam year and choose material that covers Decision Making, Verbal and Logical Ability (VALR), Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation (QA/DI), General Knowledge and solved XAT papers.
Check a book before purchasing
- Does it explain Decision Making sets step by step rather than offering only answer keys?
- Does it include recent, timed XAT papers and identify the year of each question?
- Are QA/DI solutions clear enough to compare multiple methods?
- Does the VALR section address reading comprehension, critical reasoning and verbal questions?
- Is the GK material dated, and is it supplemented with current-affairs revision?
- Does the book’s edition match the 2027 exam cycle?
Use a deliberate study sequence
- Take a diagnostic mock to identify weak sections and timing problems.
- Learn the question types in Decision Making, VALR and QA/DI, then solve untimed examples until the method is reliable.
- Move to timed sectional sets and record accuracy, time per question and guesses.
- Work through solved XAT papers under exam conditions; review every error and every lucky guess.
- Add a weekly GK review, while keeping the main emphasis on sections that determine your XAT score.
- In the final weeks, take full mocks, practice selection of questions and protect time for interview preparation.
Buying several books is not a substitute for an error log. One current book with clear solutions, recent solved papers and a disciplined review routine is usually more useful than a shelf of overlapping guides.

- Verify the latest calendar, fee revisions and cohort-specific placement information before committing.
- Choose an XAT preparation book by coverage, solved-paper currency and explanation quality, not by an implied endorsement.
- Accept only when the downside case remains financially and professionally manageable.
