Build R3139 is a historical Android 9 Pie update, not a new 2026 release. A report published on December 8, 2020 said Xiaomi was rolling it out to Mi Box S and Mi Box 4K devices. It listed support for Peel Mi Remote and additional Bluetooth gamepads as the build’s changes. The same report did not provide a downloadable stable R3139 package: its linked download was instead the earlier R3138 beta. Owners should check the box’s built-in updater and avoid installing a firmware file unless it is verified for their exact model and region.
What is the Mi Box R3139 update?
R3139 is an Android TV 9 maintenance build, also described as Android 9 Pie, for Xiaomi’s Mi Box S and region-specific Mi Box 4K products. It does not upgrade the box to Android 10 or Google TV. The Mi Box S is commonly identified as model MDZ-22-AB; Mi Box 4K is a related product associated particularly with India. Similar product names do not establish that every hardware revision or regional firmware channel can use the same update.
A contemporaneous Android Sage report dated December 8, 2020 described R3139 as a stable OTA rollout. That is evidence of a reported rollout, not a complete Xiaomi-hosted release note or proof that every eligible box received it. Read the December 8, 2020 report.
What changes does R3139 list?

Was R3139 available to download?
The report’s rollout description and its download section do not match neatly: it said R3139 was rolling out on the stable channel, but marked the stable R3139 ZIP as “coming soon.” The file it linked was OTA4 Beta 2, build R3138, described there as a full OTA of approximately 678 MB. That size applies to the linked R3138 package, not to R3139.
The report also said beta users might first receive or install R3138 and then receive the stable update. Do not mistake that beta package for stable R3139, and do not assume a file found elsewhere is authentic or suitable. The available report does not verify a publicly downloadable stable R3139 package.

How to check for an update safely
- Connect the Mi Box to the internet and turn it on.
- Open Settings → System updates. Menu wording can differ by region or firmware version.
- Choose the option to check for or download an update, if shown.
- If an OTA is offered for the box, let it download and install. Keep power connected and do not unplug the device during installation.
- After the box restarts, open its device information screen and check the installed build.
This built-in updater is the preferred path. The reported menu path comes from the 2020 article and may not be identical on every software version.
Why might the update not appear?
- Staged rollout: an OTA may not reach every device at once.
- Model or region mismatch: the box may use different hardware or a regional firmware channel.
- Different current build: the device may already be on a later build or a different update branch.
- Historical availability: Xiaomi’s servers may no longer offer this 2020 OTA.
- Basic update problems: network access, available storage, or service issues can prevent checking or downloading.
Confirm the model and current build, restart the box, then retry the built-in updater. Do not sideload a ZIP merely because its filename looks right, and do not mix Mi Box S and Mi Box 4K firmware unless the package is confirmed for the exact hardware and region.

Should you install firmware manually?
Manual installation is an advanced fallback, not the recommended way to obtain R3139. The report discusses sideloading through stock recovery, but the package it actually linked was R3138 beta—not a verified stable R3139 download. It therefore does not establish a stable R3139 file, its size, or a universally applicable installation procedure.
Before considering any manual OTA:
- Confirm the exact model, region, current build, and update channel.
- Use a package from a trustworthy origin and check its cryptographic integrity if a checksum is provided.
- Back up app settings and other data where possible; an incorrect package can cause a boot loop or data loss.
- Keep power connected throughout installation.
- Do not use beta firmware simply to force an update, and avoid sites that repackage firmware or bundle extra tools.
If a verified package for the exact device is unavailable, wait for the built-in updater or consult current Xiaomi support information for that model instead of guessing at a firmware file.

What to do if problems remain
The update fails or the box will not boot normally
Do not immediately try another model’s firmware. Check that power and the network are stable, restart if the device can do so safely, and consult support guidance for the exact model. A factory reset should be a last resort: it can erase local settings and app data.
A Bluetooth controller will not pair
“More gamepads” does not mean all controllers work. Check the controller’s pairing mode and firmware, then test the exact controller and game you use. Compatibility can vary by model.

The phone remote app does not control the box
Peel Mi Remote support does not give every phone infrared hardware. The described infrared remote function requires an IR blaster, and app support also varies by phone.
USB or display trouble continues
The 2020 report ties green-screen and USB fixes to the preceding beta cycle rather than documenting them as confirmed R3139 entries. USB results can depend on the attached device, hub, and power needs; display symptoms can depend on the cable, TV, resolution, or app. Test one variable at a time rather than assuming the build guarantees a fix.
Keep the Mi Box or replace it?
If the box still runs the apps and accessories you need, the reported R3139 changes are incremental Android 9 improvements—not a reason by themselves to replace working hardware. Consider replacement if you need a newer operating system, longer-term security and app support, faster performance, more storage, or a current Google TV experience.

- Newer Xiaomi TV boxes: worth considering if you want to stay with Xiaomi, but model names, software support, and availability vary by country. Xiaomi’s site.
Compare the exact model’s support, app ecosystem, storage, codecs, remote features, gaming needs, and regional availability before choosing a replacement; none is a universal like-for-like upgrade.
