After an Xbox update, check Settings > System > Updates, confirm the privacy and notification controls you care about, and review any new or moved options. For automatic installs, enable both update checkboxes, use Sleep on Xbox Series X|S (or Instant-On on Xbox One), and leave storage powered while the console is off. These checks help prevent the familiar “this game needs to update” delay, but they do not mean every game updates automatically: games played in the last 28 days qualify, while apps are covered more broadly.

Which Xbox settings should you review after an update?

Use this checklist on Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One. Menu wording can vary slightly with console software; the paths below reflect English-language Xbox menus reported as of October 30, 2026.

  • Updates: Settings > System > Updates. Check Keep my console up to date and, unless you need to control data use, Keep my games & apps up to date.
  • Background installs: choose Sleep on Series X|S, or Instant-On on Xbox One, and make sure When Xbox is off, turn off storage is not selected.
  • Privacy: review Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety, especially communication, multiplayer, activity, and party-invite permissions.
  • Notifications: check console toasts, Game Bar or Xbox app settings on Windows, and your phone’s operating-system permission separately.
  • New October 2026 controls: look for download-while-streaming under Cloud gaming, startup-animation options under System > Startup, and the other newly public settings described below.

Microsoft has not stated that system updates reset privacy, notification, or power settings by default. A post-update review is a way to confirm your preferences and discover moved or added controls, not proof that a setting has been reset.

How do I review Xbox privacy settings?

On the console, open Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety. Review who can see your activity and game history, who can communicate with you, whether communication outside Xbox is allowed, and who can invite you to a party. The appropriate choices depend on whether you want an open social profile, a more private account, or tighter controls for a child.

Review account controls on the web, too

Microsoft says Xbox users can view or edit personal data, privacy settings, online-safety preferences, and data-sharing choices through My Xbox on the console or on Xbox.com. The privacy-and-safety page is at xbox.com/user/settings/privacy-and-safety. This can be useful when you want to inspect account controls away from the console; it is not a substitute for reviewing app-specific permissions on the console.

Privacy settings affect more than what other players see. Microsoft’s September 2026 Privacy Statement says collected data can support services and curated experiences, including offers, discounts, and recommendations. To change recommendation settings, use the Xbox online safety and privacy settings hub; do not confuse those controls with toast-notification settings. Optional diagnostic-data controls are available at xbox.com/managedatacollection.

Know what privacy settings cannot hide

Microsoft’s Privacy Statement says a gamertag and scores shown on game leaderboards are public and cannot be hidden. Other information can be limited or blocked from public or friend sharing through console and Xbox.com settings. Microsoft also says age or identity verification may affect settings or access to some features if verification fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Data sharing can also involve the games and apps you install: Microsoft says publishers and developers may receive information such as gamertag, presence, play statistics, friends lists, and in-game communications for network-connected titles. The statement says this can continue until the title is removed from all devices; some consent can also be revoked through Microsoft’s consent controls. Review permissions in context rather than assuming that hiding profile details disables every form of in-game sharing.

Check app and family permissions

Xbox Store apps require permission to access console data. Xbox Support explains: “When you download apps from the Microsoft Store on your Xbox, each app requires permission to access data from your console. You can use the privacy settings on your console to control what data Microsoft collects and how it’s used.” If an update adds apps or features you do not recognize, review app privacy permissions as well as account-wide settings.

For child accounts, Microsoft says privacy settings start at the most restrictive level by default, and optional diagnostic-data collection is turned off. Parents can review controls in the Xbox Family Settings app and at Settings > Account > Family. Xbox family settings apply on Xbox consoles, Xbox on PC, and mobile, but may not carry over to other platforms. Avoid relaxing communication or multiplayer limits unless that is your intention.

Some newer features have their own controls. Microsoft’s Privacy Statement says Support virtual agents and Game assist have additional in-feature privacy options; Game assist chats can be viewed, exported, or deleted in the Copilot section of the Microsoft privacy dashboard.

How do I control Xbox notifications after an update?

Think of notifications as separate layers: console pop-up toasts, alerts in PC Game Bar or the Windows Xbox app, and mobile-app alerts governed partly by iOS or Android. Turning off an alert in one place may not turn it off in the others.

Console pop-up notifications

Xbox Support describes pop-up, or toast, notifications as alerts for events such as a new message or incoming video call. The console controls let you turn notifications on or off, choose which kinds appear, change their screen position, and set how long they remain visible. Xbox Wire said a 2026 update added more control over where notifications appear while you play.

The current Xbox Support article is titled Manage Xbox and app pop-up notifications. Use that official guide for the console’s current click-by-click instructions; its customization instructions are not reproduced here because the exact console path is not established. If alerts interrupt a competitive match or cover capture footage, changing placement or duration can be less disruptive than disabling every alert. If you rely on party or message alerts, keep those types enabled while reducing less useful toasts.

Service alerts are a separate practical consideration: a 2026 Home update added alerts when Xbox services have an issue. Keeping service alerts on can help distinguish a service outage from a problem with your console or network.

PC Game Bar and the Windows Xbox app

For Game Bar, open Game Bar > Settings widget > More settings > General and choose notification placement. Gamepad cursor controls are also on that General tab. This changes where Game Bar alerts appear; it does not change console toast settings.

In the Xbox app for Windows, open Settings > Notifications to manage alerts such as friend invites, party messages, and game updates. Then check Windows Settings > System > Notifications > Xbox. Windows Quiet hours or Focus can suppress alerts even when the Xbox app’s own notification toggles are on.

Xbox mobile app and phone permissions

In the mobile Xbox app, open Settings > Notifications, then check whether iOS or Android permits notifications for the Xbox app. Both layers matter: an app-level alert can be enabled while the phone blocks it, or the phone can permit alerts that the app itself has disabled. Xbox Support also cautions that if notifications are disabled in one app but continue to arrive, check other apps as well.

How to turn on auto update on Xbox

Enable the two update options in the console’s update settings. The console can download and apply system updates automatically, while game updates have a narrower eligibility rule: Xbox’s reported interface note says games played in the last 28 days update automatically based on your current location. Apps are included in the game-and-app setting more broadly.

  1. Press the Xbox button, then open Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates.
  2. Turn on Keep my console up to date to allow console updates to download and apply automatically, including when the console is off.
  3. Turn on Keep my games & apps up to date if you want eligible games and apps to update automatically.
  4. If your software version exposes the same controls under Settings > General > Power options > Customize power options, confirm them there as well.
  5. For a manual check, open My games & apps > See all > Manage > Updates. For one title, highlight it, press the Menu button, and choose Manage game & add-ons.

Xbox Support distinguishes available system updates from mandatory ones; either type can be received automatically or manually. Its guidance also notes that if automatic game updates are restricted, you will be notified about available updates when you launch a game or app and can update then or wait. That means the setting can trade convenience for control over when downloads use your connection.

Does Xbox auto-update games when the console is turned off?

It can, but the power mode and storage setting matter. On Series X|S, choose Settings > General > Power options > Sleep when you want queued downloads to continue after you stop playing. On Xbox One, Instant-On is the comparable mode under Settings > General > Power mode & startup.

Leave When Xbox is off, turn off storage unchecked. When enabled, that setting cuts power to storage and prevents background installs from continuing. Sleep also supports remote wake and starts faster than energy-saving Shutdown, but it uses a different power state.

Power option What it means for updates Choose it when
Sleep (Series X|S) / Instant-On (Xbox One) Supports queued background downloads and remote wake. You want downloads to continue while the console is off.
Shutdown (energy saving) Xbox’s power-mode information says automatic console and game updates are supported, but this mode is not the background-download choice for a queued install you expect to keep running. You prioritize energy saving and can wait for downloads to run when the console is active.

Power behavior and the separate storage toggle are easy to conflate: automatic update eligibility does not guarantee that a particular queued install will continue in every off-state configuration.

Why are my Xbox games not updating automatically even though auto-update is on?

The update toggle is not a promise that every game downloads immediately. Check these causes before treating a stalled title as a console fault:

  • The game was not played recently: the reported console rule covers games played in the last 28 days, based on current location. A rarely played game may need a manual update.
  • The console is in the wrong power state: use Sleep on Series X|S or Instant-On on Xbox One for queued background work, and confirm storage is not set to turn off when the console is off.
  • The download was restricted: if you turned off game-and-app auto-updates to manage a data cap, updates wait until you launch the title. Games or add-ons bought on a PC will also no longer install automatically on your home Xbox.
  • A game is running: Xbox’s slow-download troubleshooting guidance, quoted by The Tech Gorilla, says “background downloads are constrained while a game is running”. Quit running or suspended games if you want the console to prioritize a download.
  • The queue has not been started: open My games & apps > See all > Manage > Queue and select Install now for the item.
  • The update is not available or the queue appears stuck: check the update list manually and verify the console’s system software is current. The October 28, 2026 public update fixed an issue where downloads could appear to pause or stop unexpectedly.

Xbox Support’s bandwidth guidance puts the data trade-off plainly: “If you’ve set your games to update automatically, chances are you’ve used a lot of network bandwidth recently.” If you restrict downloads, Support says, “You’ll be notified of available updates only when you launch a game or app, and you can choose whether to update now or wait for later.” It also warns: “If you restrict your downloads and then buy games or add-ons on your PC, they’ll no longer install automatically on your home Xbox.”

How to make Xbox download faster

First, remove avoidable competition for the connection and confirm that the console is actually installing the item you want. Xbox’s own troubleshooting guidance recommends Ethernet; Remote Play or streaming can also slow console downloads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Quit any running or suspended game if the download is the priority.
  2. Open My games & apps > See all > Manage > Queue, select the download, and choose Install now.
  3. Use a wired Ethernet connection if practical, rather than adding another competing wireless transfer.
  4. Pause or stop Remote Play or streaming while the console downloads if speed is more important than keeping that session active.
  5. On Series X|S, check whether streaming preferences allow downloads to continue during cloud streaming; turn that option off if streaming becomes unstable.

As a rough illustration rather than a guaranteed console result, The Tech Gorilla attributed an estimate of about 1.6 hours for a 70 GB game at 100 Mb/s and about 3 hours at 50 Mb/s. Actual time varies with the connection, network congestion, game-server delivery, and other downloads; those figures are not a promise for a particular household.

The Tech Gorilla also recommends keeping at least 10 percent of storage free, or about 50 GB, to leave room for updates. Treat that as a practical how-to recommendation, not an official Xbox minimum quota.

What did the October 2026 Xbox update add or move?

The public rollout began October 28, 2026, according to Pure Xbox citing Xbox’s What’s New notes. The changes are worth checking after updating, especially if a control seems to have moved or a new option appears.

  • Startup animation and sound: go to Settings > System > Startup to choose which generation’s startup animation plays. The option to play it without sound moved there.
  • Downloads during cloud streaming: open Settings > Cloud gaming > Streaming preferences and choose whether downloads continue while streaming. Xbox Wire said this works when network conditions allow and can be turned off at any time; Series X|S are expected to see the biggest gains. If streaming stutters, disable it.
  • Voice Clarity: find it under Settings > General > Volume & audio output > Additional options. Xbox Wire said it is enabled by default in party chat and in most games released since 2020.
  • Remote Play display options: under Settings > General > TV & display options, 1440p or 4K UHD resolution can be relevant if you use the newer 1440p or higher-bitrate Remote Play path.
  • Home and storage housekeeping: Home gained a right-thumbstick immersive-background mode and a Menu option to remove recent items, including Play History. The local game-save manager can display, sort, and delete unused local saves.
  • Disc-to-digital licences: under Settings > General > Personalization > Games & apps, licences you no longer have access to open a console-native experience.

Xbox Wire’s September 2026 announcement said downloads could continue in the background while players stream when network conditions allow, helping reduce waits without interrupting gameplay. The public October release made the setting relevant to all users rather than just the earlier Insider audience.

How do I stop Xbox from changing my background?

If an event-themed Home image replaces your custom background, open Settings > General > Personalization > My background and turn off Show event themed backgrounds. This control is reported in community discussion, so treat the path and label as a practical pointer that may differ by software version. The Personalization area also contains the controls for selecting custom or dynamic background art.

This is separate from privacy and from notification settings: changing the Home background does not change what data Xbox collects or which alerts appear. If only the background changed after an update, review personalization controls rather than changing account-wide privacy settings.

Should you leave automatic updates on?

For most players without a strict monthly data cap, enabling game-and-app updates reduces the chance of meeting an update screen when starting a game. If your connection has a cap or limited bandwidth, turn that option off and accept that updates will wait until launch; check the queue manually when you are ready. Console system updates are a separate switch, so decide whether automatic system maintenance fits your connection and preference.

There is no published survey establishing which post-update settings most players change. The practical decision is based on your priorities: convenience versus data use, uninterrupted play versus alerts, and social access versus tighter privacy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep Xbox game updates from using my data while I play?

Yes. Turn off Keep my games & apps up to date and install updates when you choose. Xbox Support says restricted downloads are surfaced when you launch a game or app, so leave time before a planned session if the title has an update.

Do Xbox privacy settings apply to games on other platforms?

Not necessarily. Microsoft says Xbox-specific family settings may not apply on platforms outside Xbox console, Xbox on PC, and mobile. A game’s own account and privacy controls may need a separate review.

Can Xbox wishlist notifications appear without a console alert?

Yes. Wishlist sale, Game Pass, and preorder alerts were added to the Xbox mobile app Inbox in April 2026. Their availability on the phone depends on both Xbox app notification settings and the device’s notification permission.

How long will Xbox Series X and Series S receive security updates?

Xbox Support states that Series X and Series S receive security updates at least until November 10, 2028. That is a security-update commitment, not a guarantee that every future feature or game will be supported for that period.
