Its confirmed 2027 milestone is planned shipments of alpha hardware to developers. Xbox has described a broader hardware portfolio, and later reporting refers to a “family” of Helix devices, but neither establishes that exactly three Helix products will launch.
What is Project Helix?
Project Helix is the codename for Xbox’s next-generation first-party console project. Xbox says it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games, and that it uses a custom AMD system-on-a-chip (SoC) co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). The announcement describes the project at a high level; it does not provide retail specifications.
Xbox’s Jason Ronald, Vice President of Next Generation, said: “Project Helix is designed to play your Xbox console and PC games, delivering leading performance and ushering in the next generation of console gaming.” Xbox Wire’s March 11, 2026 announcement is the primary source for those details.
When does the next Xbox come out?
There is no confirmed consumer release date. Xbox says it plans to ship alpha versions of Helix hardware to developers beginning in 2027. That is a development milestone, not a promise that customers can buy the console in 2027.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Ronald’s statement is specific: “I’m excited to share we plan to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027.” Xbox Wire does not announce a retail date. Separately, Windows Central has reported that 2027 could be a best-case consumer launch scenario, while noting that Microsoft had not made a firm internal commitment. Treat that as secondary reporting, not an official release plan.
Will Project Helix launch with three devices?
That count is unconfirmed. Xbox has outlined a broader next-generation portfolio spanning console, handheld, PC, cloud, and accessories, alongside an AMD collaboration on silicon for future first-party consoles and cloud. Those categories describe a wider strategy; Xbox has not said they represent three Helix launch devices. Xbox’s June 19, 2025 announcement with AMD does not name a three-product Helix lineup.

A September 2026 MeriStation report attributes a remark about a “great family of devices for Helix” to Xbox head Asha Sharma. The report does not give a device count. A family could mean multiple products, but it is not evidence of exactly three devices, their form factors, or simultaneous availability.

What the announcements say about Xbox’s wider ecosystem
Xbox’s broader strategy includes console, handheld, PC, cloud, and accessories, but those categories should not be mistaken for a confirmed Helix product list. The company also cited more than 1,500 games in the Xbox Play Anywhere catalog, 500 development teams that have shipped games with Play Anywhere, and more than 5,000 developers worldwide building for Xbox. These are ecosystem figures from Xbox’s March 2026 announcement, not Helix sales forecasts, device counts, or launch projections. Xbox Wire provides the figures and context.

What to watch for next
A developer alpha program can precede a retail launch by a significant interval, and the announcement gives no schedule for that interval. To assess claims about Helix’s launch, look for an official consumer release date, named products and their intended roles, retail specifications, pricing, regional availability, and confirmed compatibility details. Until Xbox supplies those, a 2027 retail date and three-device lineup remain possibilities rather than confirmed plans.
