For those games, Xbox says saves, add-ons, and achievements travel between supported devices. It applies only to titles specifically designated Play Anywhere, so check the game listing before purchasing.
What Xbox Play Anywhere means
Play Anywhere is a title-by-title Xbox feature, not a benefit included with every Xbox game. When a game carries the Play Anywhere designation, the purchase covers its supported versions across Xbox console, PC, and supported gaming handhelds. Xbox describes this as buying once and playing on those devices at no additional cost. See the Xbox Play Anywhere page for the feature and catalog.
How cross-buy and cross-save work
Cross-buy: one eligible purchase
“Cross-buy” describes the buy-once benefit: you do not need to purchase the supported console and PC versions separately for a game designated Play Anywhere. Do not assume a game qualifies just because it is sold for Xbox, or that a purchase outside the applicable Xbox ecosystem includes the same benefit. Confirm the designation on the specific game listing.
Cross-save: continue progress across devices
For eligible games, Xbox says saves, add-ons, and achievements travel across supported devices, letting you pick up where you left off. This is progress continuity, not a promise that multiplayer works between platforms. Cross-play is a separate, game-specific feature; Xbox’s PC gaming page qualifies cross-play with “if the game supports cross-play.”

Which devices are supported?
Xbox identifies Xbox console, PC, and supported gaming handhelds as Play Anywhere device categories. “Supported” matters: the feature does not guarantee that every handheld computer supports every game equally, or that every PC can run a particular title.
For PC play, the Xbox PC app requires Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 22H2 or higher. Individual games have their own system requirements, so check those as well as the app requirement on Xbox’s PC gaming page. Xbox Wire’s July 22, 2026 announcement about a separate early-release Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC program names ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X as supported handhelds for that initiative; it is not a complete hardware list for Play Anywhere. How to check whether a game qualifies
- Look for the Play Anywhere designation. Check the individual game listing or search the current Xbox Play Anywhere catalog.
- Confirm your target device. Make sure the listing covers the version and device you intend to use; handheld support is not universal.
- Check PC requirements if applicable. The Xbox PC app requires Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher, while the game may require additional hardware or software.
- Separate the feature you need. Play Anywhere covers eligible purchases and progress across devices. Check the game separately for multiplayer cross-play, and do not assume the designation includes cloud streaming.
Is there a complete list of Play Anywhere games?
Xbox provides a live catalog, which is the best place to check a particular title because the catalog can change. Xbox Wire reported “over 1,000 games” supporting Play Anywhere in an August 28, 2025 update. That is a dated figure, not a current count; use the live catalog to verify a game today. Xbox Wire’s August 2025 update gives the original context for that number.

Play Anywhere concerns the supported versions of an eligible purchase and the continuity of progress across devices. Cloud gaming is a separate feature discussed independently on Xbox’s PC gaming page; a Play Anywhere label alone does not establish that a game can be streamed.
