Recommended Free Tools
Free Play Days is a limited-time promotion for trying selected games; Xbox Game Pass is a subscription that provides access to a changing game catalogue and other plan-dependent benefits. They are not two equivalent subscriptions: Free Play Days is an extra perk available to certain Game Pass members, and trying a featured game does not mean you own it.
How Free Play Days and Game Pass differ
| Question | Free Play Days | Xbox Game Pass |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A recurring, limited-time promotion featuring selected games. | A subscription that provides access to a changing game catalogue and plan-specific benefits. |
| Who can use it? | Xbox lists Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and Essential members as eligible. PC Game Pass is not named in that eligibility statement. | Availability and features depend on the plan, platform, region, and current terms. |
| How long does access last? | Only for the promotional period for each featured game. | While the subscription is active and the game remains in the catalogue. |
| Does access mean ownership? | No. Trying a game does not transfer ownership; a purchase may be offered separately. | No. Catalogue access is conditional, not permanent ownership. |
Xbox says new Free Play Days games are featured weekly. Its Free Play Days page changes over time, and current titles, dates, discounts, and regional availability should be checked there. The US page listed Far Cry 6, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Skull and Bones, and The Crew Motorfest Cross-Gen Bundle when checked on October 4, 2026; that list is a snapshot, not a standing offer.
Do you need Game Pass for Free Play Days?
Xbox’s Free Play Days page names Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and Essential members as eligible. It does not include PC Game Pass in that eligibility statement, so PC-only members should check the live offer and its terms rather than assume they qualify. Eligibility and featured games may vary by region and offer.
Can you keep a Free Play Days game?
Free Play Days provides temporary access, not a copy to keep. If you want to play after the promotion ends, you generally need to buy the game or access it through another eligible offer. Xbox may show a discount for a featured game, but discounts and participating titles change; check the live listing before purchasing.

Does Game Pass mean you own its games?
No. Game Pass is access to a catalogue, not permanent ownership of every game in it. Xbox says access ends if the subscription is canceled or expires, or if a game leaves the catalogue. Check the Xbox Game Pass page for current plans and benefits; catalogue availability and features vary by plan, platform, and region.
Which option makes sense for you?
- You want to try one featured game: Check the current Free Play Days listing, its dates, and whether your membership qualifies.
- You want ongoing access to a broader selection: Compare the current Game Pass plans and confirm that the game you want is included for your plan and region.
- You want to keep a particular game: Treat either service as access rather than ownership; check the game’s purchase option and terms separately.
Game Pass plans, prices, platforms, and benefits can change, so compare the current regional plan details before subscribing. The key distinction remains: Free Play Days is a temporary tryout for selected titles, while Game Pass is the subscription catalogue.
