The new feature lets you claim a digital entitlement for certain supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs, but Microsoft’s rules condition that entitlement on continuing to possess the qualifying disc. A normal digital purchase instead gives your Microsoft account a digital-game license under Xbox’s standard account and Home console rules.
What Xbox disc-to-digital does
Announced on August 26, 2026, Xbox disc-to-digital lets players claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc into a supported console and launching the game. Xbox said the feature would start with thousands of titles, with more added over time; not every game would be eligible at launch. Xbox’s announcement described testing for Xbox Insiders beginning August 31, 2026.
The entitlement adds digital access, but it does not turn the disc into an unconditional digital purchase. Microsoft’s current Services Agreement says the digital license remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc. Microsoft may suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess it, and the license cannot be transferred separately from the disc.
How the two options differ
| Consideration | Disc-to-digital | Regular digital purchase |
|---|---|---|
| What provides the license | An eligible physical Xbox game disc is used to claim the digital entitlement. | The digital-game license is associated with your Microsoft account. |
| Do you need to keep the disc? | Yes. Continued possession of the specific qualifying disc is a condition of access; the entitlement may be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess it. | No qualifying disc is required for the digital license. |
| Can you transfer the license separately? | No. Microsoft says the entitlement cannot be transferred separately from the qualifying disc. | It follows Microsoft’s ordinary digital-goods and account rules; it is not a separately transferable physical copy. |
| Is every game eligible? | No. Eligibility depends on the title and may change. | Disc-to-digital eligibility does not apply to a digital purchase. |
| Sharing on a Home console | Digital access remains subject to Xbox’s applicable device and account rules. | On your designated Home console, other users can access digital content under the device license; roaming access depends on your account being signed in. |
Microsoft describes digital goods as licensed, not sold. The standard Xbox rules for digital games still apply to a regular digital purchase, including account and Home console access. Microsoft Services Agreement and Xbox Home Xbox guidance explain those terms.

Can you play an Xbox disc without the disc?
With disc-to-digital, an eligible game can be accessed digitally after you claim its entitlement, but Microsoft’s continued-possession condition means you should not treat that access as independent of the qualifying disc. If the disc is lost, sold, or otherwise no longer in your possession, Microsoft says the entitlement may be suspended or revoked.
That condition is distinct from ordinary disc play. Xbox says backward-compatible disc games require the disc to be in the drive to play. Xbox Series S consoles do not play physical discs, so Series S owners should confirm that a usable digital entitlement exists for the specific title rather than assuming a disc will work on that hardware. Xbox backward compatibility guidance covers disc requirements.

Which Xbox discs qualify?
Not all Xbox One or Xbox Series X discs are eligible. Microsoft says availability can vary for technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons, and it may add or remove eligible discs. Check the current status for the particular supported Xbox game disc; do not assume that a format or console generation alone guarantees eligibility.
What digital benefits may carry over?
Xbox says the claimed entitlement can provide digital benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported. Those benefits are title- and service-dependent; a disc-to-digital claim does not guarantee that every game works on PC or through cloud streaming.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which option should you choose?
- Choose disc-to-digital if your particular disc is eligible, you will keep possessing it, and you want supported digital access or features without making a separate digital purchase.
- Choose a regular digital purchase if you want a digital-game license that does not depend on keeping a qualifying disc, and you are comfortable with Microsoft’s normal account, Home console, and service rules.
- Check hardware first if you use a Series S or another console without a disc drive. A physical disc cannot serve as your way to play on that console; confirm the specific game’s digital availability and entitlement.
- Check sharing and cross-device support separately. Home console access, Play Anywhere, and Cloud Gaming have their own conditions, and availability varies by game and service.
The key distinction is what the license depends on: disc-to-digital access is tied to continued possession of an eligible disc, while a regular digital purchase is tied to the account and Xbox’s standard digital-game rules.
