Yes. You can play supported Xbox games on a compatible Amazon Fire TV without owning an Xbox console. Microsoft streams the game from its cloud servers through the Xbox app; you supply a supported Fire TV device, a Microsoft account, a Bluetooth controller and reliable high-speed internet. Most games require an eligible Game Pass subscription, while supported free-to-play titles such as Fortnite work with a free Microsoft account.
What Microsoft and Amazon launched
On June 27, 2024, Microsoft announced Xbox Cloud Gaming through the Xbox app for selected Amazon Fire TV devices in more than 25 countries, with rollout beginning in July 2024. Amazon described access to hundreds of cloud-enabled games without a console, naming Starfield, Fallout 4 and Forza Horizon 5 as examples. The launch announcement focused on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members; current access depends on the Game Pass plan, game and country.
Because processing happens in Microsoft’s data centers, the Fire TV acts as the streaming client rather than running the Xbox game locally. Xbox’s product page summarizes the arrangement as “No TV or console required.” In practice, you still need a television or display and a compatible Fire TV device.
Which Fire TV devices are supported?
Xbox’s current supported-device list names these models and generations:

Model names are not interchangeable across generations. Check the exact generation in Amazon’s device settings or your purchase record before assuming a Fire TV Stick will run the Xbox app. A device not on Xbox’s list should be treated as unsupported, even if it is a recent or higher-priced Fire TV model.
What you need before starting
- A Fire TV Stick or Fire TV Cube from the supported list.
- The Xbox app installed on that device.
- A Microsoft account.
- A compatible Bluetooth controller, such as an Xbox Wireless Controller configured for Bluetooth. Other verified Bluetooth controllers may also work.
- A high-speed internet connection. Xbox does not publish one universal minimum bandwidth, latency target or resolution guarantee for every Fire TV setup.
- An eligible Game Pass subscription for most cloud games. Supported free-to-play games, including Fortnite, can be played with a free Microsoft account.
How to play Xbox games on Fire TV
- Confirm the hardware. Verify that your Stick or Cube is one of the four supported device generations.
- Install the Xbox app. Open the Fire TV app store, search for “Xbox,” and install the official Xbox app.
- Sign in. Launch the app and log in with the Microsoft account that has your eligible Game Pass access, or use a free account for supported free-to-play games.
- Pair a controller. Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode, then open Fire TV Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices > Other Bluetooth Devices and select it when it appears.
- Choose a cloud-enabled game. Browse the titles available to your account and select a game marked for cloud play.
- Start streaming. The game runs remotely and sends video to Fire TV while your controller inputs travel back to Microsoft’s servers.
Do you need Game Pass?
For most games, yes. Xbox says an active Game Pass subscription is required for most cloud-playable titles, but the exact catalog depends on the plan, country, licensing and the date you check. The launch announcement specifically described access for Game Pass Ultimate members; do not assume that every Game Pass tier includes every cloud title.

Free-to-play exceptions are available. Xbox identifies Fortnite as a supported example that can be played with a free Microsoft account, without buying a Game Pass plan. The app’s listing for each game is the practical check for whether your account can start it.
What games are available?
Cloud availability is not a permanent list. Microsoft, publishers and regional licensing determine which games appear, and titles can be added, removed or restricted by plan. The launch examples—Starfield, Fallout 4, Forza Horizon 5 and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II—illustrate the service but are not a guarantee of continued access in every market. “Hundreds” describes the broad size of the cloud-enabled catalog, not a fixed number available to every subscriber.

How performance differs from an Xbox console
Cloud gaming depends on the complete network path between your home, Microsoft’s servers and the Fire TV. Xbox requires high-speed internet but does not state one universal bandwidth or latency threshold for all Fire TV configurations, nor does it guarantee a particular resolution. Responsiveness and image quality can therefore vary with congestion, Wi-Fi conditions, distance to a data center and the game itself.
- Input latency: Controller commands must travel to the cloud and the resulting video must return, so timing can feel less immediate than on locally running console hardware.
- Image quality: The stream can adjust to network conditions rather than matching a console’s consistently rendered output.
- Reliability: An internet outage or unstable connection stops play, whereas an installed console game can continue offline when the game supports offline play.

Common problems and checks
The Xbox app is missing
Confirm the Fire TV model and generation against Xbox’s supported list, then check that the device software and Amazon account region are current. An unsupported generation may not show the app.

The controller will not connect
Disconnect it from another device, enable Bluetooth pairing mode and retry through Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices > Other Bluetooth Devices. Keep the controller close to the Fire TV during pairing.
A game is locked or unavailable
Check whether the title is cloud-enabled in your country and included with your Game Pass plan. Catalog, licensing and plan eligibility can change; a game shown in launch coverage is not necessarily available now.

Streaming feels delayed or unstable
Use the most reliable high-speed connection available, reduce competing traffic and improve the Fire TV’s network signal. Xbox provides no single Fire TV bandwidth or latency number that guarantees a particular result, so network conditions remain the deciding factor.
Who should use this setup?
Fire TV cloud gaming suits someone who already owns a supported Fire TV, wants occasional access to Xbox titles, or values avoiding a console purchase. A console remains the more dependable choice for players who require consistently low input delay, local rendering, offline play or access to games that are not offered through cloud streaming.
