There is no detailed, dated public roadmap for upcoming Xbox Ally updates in the official announcements available through May 2026. Instead, Xbox and ASUS have described a rolling program of improvements, with some features already announced or released, one major feature in Insider preview, and further work promised without dates. Here’s what the update trail says—and what it does not establish—as of October 4, 2026.
Is there an official Xbox Ally roadmap?
Xbox and ASUS have shared a sequence of feature announcements and rollout notes for the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X, rather than a public calendar of future release dates. Xbox said in April 2026 that work to refine the experience continues, but the official material available through May 2026 does not set out when the next Ally-specific updates will arrive.
That means earlier statements such as “early next year” should be read as what Xbox said in November 2025, not as proof that a feature is still pending or as a current date. Later announcements described the subsequent status of several items.

What the announced updates do
Docked play and external displays
Xbox’s April 30, 2026 announcement said that when the Ally is docked, gameplay moves to the external TV display and the handheld screen turns off. Supported smart TVs from Samsung, LG and Vizio can activate gaming features. A Game Bar Display Widget provides controls for resolution, refresh rate and projection mode.

Xbox also said the Bulwark Dock and ROG 100W Charger Dock support HDR10, with variable refresh rate (VRR) support on the Bulwark Dock. It described plans to extend support to more Designed for Xbox docks over time; that statement does not identify a date or name additional supported docks.
External controllers and Gamepad Cursor
With improved docked controller pairing, the Ally’s built-in controls are disabled when an external controller takes over. Gamepad Cursor is intended to help navigate interfaces that do not work well with a gamepad alone.
Auto SR: an Ally X Insider preview
Auto SR was available in preview to Xbox Insiders using the ROG Xbox Ally X for docked play. ASUS says the Windows feature uses the Ally X’s NPU to upscale existing DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games. Xbox described the aim as delivering detail closer to 1440p while maintaining smooth frame rates on a larger display. This is a qualified preview announcement—not confirmation of a general release, support on the base Ally, or a particular performance result for every game.
Default Game Profiles
Xbox introduced Default Game Profiles in preview with 40 supported games in November 2025. Microsoft said more than two dozen additional games had joined the list by May 2026. Profiles apply per-game settings intended to balance thermal design power (TDP) and frame-rate limits for battery play. They cover Xbox Store PC games on the Ally and Ally X; Xbox distributes the profiles and ASUS software applies the settings on the device. They are not a universal setting system for every game or storefront.

Storage formatting and shader status
The February 2026 update made it possible to format removable storage from within the Xbox app for installing and running games, including on officially licensed SanDisk microSD cards. Xbox did not specify a required card capacity or speed in that announcement.
For supported games, the Advanced Shader Delivery indicator appears on the loading screen and shows whether shaders have been precompiled. Advanced Shader Delivery is intended to preload shaders during a game download; the announcement does not establish a performance improvement for every supported title.
Other experience improvements
The April–May update announcements also covered Enhanced Vibration, Super Wideband Stereo Voice for compatible Bluetooth LE Audio headsets, and the ability to add, edit and launch games and apps in the Xbox app library.

The clearest model-specific distinction in the announcements is Auto SR: its preview was for Ally X, not the base Ally. Default Game Profiles and Advanced Shader Delivery were described for both Ally and Ally X.

ASUS says the announced April–May improvements require current BIOS or firmware, Armoury Crate and Xbox app versions. A feature’s availability can therefore depend on the software installed on the device. The available announcements do not provide a complete current rollout matrix by model, region or software version.
What is still uncertain about future updates?
Xbox and ASUS have indicated that Ally improvements are continuing, and Xbox described expanding support for additional Designed for Xbox docks over time. But the official announcements available through May 2026 do not provide a public schedule for the months ahead, nor do they establish a definitive October 2026 status for every feature on every eligible device and in every region.
Xbox also characterized more than 1,000 PC games as immediately playable through its Handheld Compatibility program in April 2026. That is Xbox’s description of the program, not an independent benchmark or a count of games with Default Game Profiles.
For a date-sensitive check, consult Xbox Wire and ASUS release notes for the Ally. Feature availability may depend on updates to device firmware, Armoury Crate and the Xbox app.
