Short answer: OBS Studio is the local encoder; Wowza Video (formerly Wowza Streaming Cloud) is a cloud service that receives, processes and delivers a stream. Wowza’s legacy documentation describes looping one hosted MP4 through a transcoder, but continuous operation keeps that transcoder running and accruing charges until it is stopped or scheduled to stop. A July 2025 Wowza support answer said scheduled playlists of prerecorded videos sent to YouTube were not then available in Wowza Video. That answer is dated, so check current Wowza documentation or support before choosing it for a playlist workflow.

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings without keeping a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps playback running from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. Details are below.

What each product does in this comparison

OBS Studio: a local encoder

OBS runs on your computer and sends an encoded stream to a destination. In Wowza’s documented combined workflow, OBS sends an RTMP source stream to Wowza Video, which then processes and delivers it. That workflow does not show that Wowza Video is required when sending a stream directly from OBS to YouTube Live.

Wowza Video: cloud processing and delivery

Wowza says its former Wowza Streaming Cloud service is now called Wowza Video; existing functionality was retained for current customers, alongside additional platform features. Its legacy file-streaming documentation describes a cloud transcoder that can fetch and loop a hosted MP4. The documented workflow is not the same thing as a confirmed playlist scheduler for prerecorded videos delivered to YouTube.

Can Wowza Video loop prerecorded videos to YouTube?

Wowza’s legacy documentation describes looping a single H.264-encoded MP4 hosted on a web server, Google Storage or Amazon S3. The transcoder downloads the source after the live stream or transcoder starts. Startup and download time vary with the transcoder startup, file size, file location and network conditions. The loop control is an advanced transcoder property and is disabled by default.

The important distinction is between looping one file and scheduling a playlist of separate videos. In a Wowza Community response dated July 10, 2025, Senior Technical Support Engineer Jason Hilton said playlist or scheduled streaming of prerecorded videos to destinations such as YouTube was not then available in Wowza Video. He described combining clips into one MP4 as a limited workaround and pointed to Wowza Streaming Engine with a module for playlist support. This is a dated answer, not confirmation of Wowza’s 2026 capabilities; verify the current feature status with Wowza before relying on it.

How the documented Wowza and OBS workflow works

  1. Prepare the source. For Wowza’s documented file-loop workflow, use an H.264-encoded MP4 hosted where Wowza can retrieve it: a web server, Google Storage or Amazon S3.
  2. Configure Wowza Video. Create and start the live stream or transcoder, configure the source and enable the loop option in the advanced transcoder properties. The legacy documentation says to allow at least five minutes for scheduled startup and file download. This is a vendor recommendation, not a guaranteed start time.
  3. Allow for the file ending. Wowza recommends adding 10–15 seconds of buffer at the end of the file to reduce the risk of premature cutoff.
  4. Send a live source with OBS, if using the combined workflow. Wowza’s setup tutorial has the user start the Wowza Video live stream first, then start OBS as an RTMP encoder to send the source to Wowza for processing and delivery.
  5. Stop or schedule the service when finished. Wowza says enabling the loop overrides idle timeout. The transcoder continues running and accruing charges until manually stopped; Wowza says a schedule can stop it at a specified time. Its OBS/Wowza tutorial also warns that charges accrue for started live streams even when they are not actively carrying content.

OBS versus Wowza Video for this use case

Question OBS Studio Wowza Video
Where does the documented work run? On the computer running OBS, which acts as the encoder in Wowza’s tutorial. In Wowza’s cloud service, which receives, processes and delivers the stream.
What looping is established? The reviewed official OBS Media Sources page did not expose its contents in the available page text, so specific loop or playlist controls are not established here. Legacy documentation describes looping a single hosted MP4 through a transcoder. Playlist delivery to YouTube was said to be unavailable in a July 10, 2025 support response; check current status.
Does the described workflow establish direct YouTube delivery? The Wowza tutorial establishes OBS sending an RTMP source to Wowza. It does not establish the exact direct-to-YouTube setup or its settings. The 2025 support answer discusses destinations such as YouTube but says scheduled prerecorded playlists were not then supported by Wowza Video.
What can keep costs running? No OBS price or computer-running cost is established here. Wowza documents continuing transcoder charges while a loop is active, until it is stopped or scheduled to stop. Current plan pricing is not established here.

Choose OBS when you want a local encoding workflow and are prepared to keep the computer and connection available. Consider Wowza Video when its cloud processing and delivery workflow fits your needs, but confirm current support for the precise source, destination and playlist behavior before committing. Neither option should be treated as a verified answer to the specific requirement “schedule a playlist of separate prerecorded files directly to YouTube” based solely on the evidence above.

Operational and cost considerations

Local versus cloud responsibility

With a local OBS workflow, the computer running OBS and its network connection are part of the streaming path. With Wowza Video’s documented loop, playback and transcoding run through the cloud service, but you still need to host a retrievable source file, configure the service and manage when it starts and stops.

Plan for startup and billing

For Wowza’s documented scheduled file workflow, allow at least five minutes for startup and downloading the file, while recognizing that the actual delay depends on file size, location and network conditions. A loop overrides idle timeout and continues accruing charges until stopped or scheduled to stop. Current Wowza plan prices were not established here, so check its current pricing and service terms before estimating a long-running stream’s cost.

Troubleshooting the documented Wowza loop

  • The file does not start promptly: Wowza says startup and download time depend on transcoder startup, file size, file location and network conditions. For scheduled starts, its documentation recommends allowing at least five minutes.
  • The source cannot be fetched: Confirm the H.264 MP4 is accessible from the web server or supported Google Storage or Amazon S3 location used in the configuration.
  • The loop stops or cuts off near the end: Confirm the advanced transcoder loop property is enabled. Wowza recommends a 10–15-second buffer at the end of the file to reduce premature cutoff risk.
  • Charges continue after the content ends: The loop overrides idle timeout. Manually stop the transcoder or configure a schedule to stop it.
  • OBS is not feeding the Wowza stream: In the documented combined workflow, start the Wowza live stream before starting OBS as the RTMP encoder. Check that OBS is sending to the intended Wowza source configuration.
  • You need multiple separate videos to play on a schedule: Do not assume the single-file loop handles a playlist. The July 2025 support answer described a combined MP4 as a limited workaround and pointed to Wowza Streaming Engine with a module; verify current Wowza options for your exact YouTube destination and scheduling needs.
