Wowza’s documented 24/7 streaming model combines a flat subscription fee for each channel with separate per-gigabyte bandwidth and egress charges. Wowza does not publish a verifiable current rate card for those 24/7 charges in the available public material, so a dependable monthly total requires the rate schedule for your account and region, plus an estimate of your stream’s traffic.
There is a naming wrinkle: “Wowza Streaming Cloud” is a legacy product name. Current public product pages feature Wowza Flowplayer OVP and Wowza Streaming Engine, while the relevant 24/7 workflow and cost documentation is labeled Wowza Video Legacy. Confirm which product and billing configuration your Wowza account offers before estimating costs. Wowza’s current pricing page is useful for product context, but Streaming Engine prices there are not the 24/7 Wowza Video rate.
What a Wowza 24/7 stream costs
Wowza’s guidance describes three cost components: a flat 24/7 subscription per stream, bandwidth charges, and egress charges. Bandwidth and egress are billed separately by the gigabyte, and Wowza says the per-gigabyte rate falls as usage rises. The actual rates depend on the applicable schedule; without it, publishing a dollar total would be guesswork. Wowza’s transcoding guidance explains this pricing structure.
| Cost component | What to establish |
|---|---|
| 24/7 subscription | Current per-stream fee for your account and region. |
| Bandwidth | Which source, output, or delivery traffic Wowza counts as bandwidth, and its applicable per-GB rate. |
| Egress | Which traffic counts as egress for your workflow, and its applicable per-GB rate. |
| Optional infrastructure | If using Wowza Streaming Engine on a public cloud, include that provider’s compute, storage, and bandwidth charges as well as the Wowza license. |
A 24/7 channel is a distinct billing mode, not an event stream billed by multiplying an hourly event tariff by all hours in a year. Wowza’s API describes this mode as unlimited stream time for one channel, without time overages. A non-leap year has 8,760 hours of continuous operation; that is useful context for estimating traffic, not a multiplier for an event-stream price. Wowza’s billing-mode documentation describes the channel model.

How to estimate bandwidth and delivery volume
Start with the stream configuration
Get the average delivered bitrate, active hours, output mode, and—if Wowza handles audience delivery—the expected viewing hours and audience. Also ask Wowza which source-to-target traffic it bills as bandwidth versus egress. A channel’s source bitrate alone may not describe all billable traffic when transcoding or delivery to viewers is involved.

Data (GB) ≈ average bitrate (Mbps) × active seconds ÷ 8,000
This is a unit conversion, not a Wowza quote. For example, first multiply the average bitrate by the number of seconds the stream is active, then divide by 8,000 to estimate decimal GB. Actual billing can differ with rendition mix, protocol overhead, source and target traffic accounting, audience delivery, and the provider’s definitions.

Choose passthrough or adaptive bitrate deliberately
- Passthrough: sends the source without transcoding. It generally uses fewer bits and avoids transcoding, but viewers do not receive a set of alternate renditions from this mode.
- Adaptive bitrate transcoding: creates multiple renditions for different devices and network conditions. It can add processing and bandwidth; whether it is cheaper overall depends on the particular workflow.
Compare both modes against your actual source, destinations, and expected viewing. Do not assume either is always the lower-cost option. Wowza’s best-practices documentation discusses the trade-offs.
Request the inputs needed for a real total
- Count the 24/7 channels and request the current per-channel subscription price for your region and account.
- Specify passthrough or adaptive bitrate output and the source’s average bitrate.
- Estimate operating hours and, if Wowza serves viewers, expected audience viewing hours.
- Ask how your source, targets, and audience delivery are classified between bandwidth and egress, and get each applicable per-GB rate.
- Add any separate cloud-provider infrastructure charges if you are deploying Wowza Streaming Engine yourself.
Only after those inputs are known can you estimate the recurring total. Higher usage may reduce the per-GB rate under Wowza’s stated pricing model, but that does not establish a universal total or a least-cost configuration.

24/7 setup limits that can affect the decision
Wowza’s Wowza Video setup documentation says a 24/7 stream continues until manually stopped or stopped by a schedule. It also lists restrictions that can matter when you compare it with an event workflow. The live-stream setup documentation states that 24/7 streams cannot be recorded, do not support 4K, and cannot have their billing mode changed after creation. It also says they do not automatically stop after 20 minutes idle.
- Choose the billing mode carefully when creating the stream; the mode cannot be changed afterward.
- Plan recording separately if you need an archive, since this 24/7 mode does not support recording.
- Do not select this mode if 4K output is a requirement.
- Set a stop schedule or plan to stop the stream manually when it should end.
Can Wowza send the stream to YouTube?
A historical Wowza Streaming Cloud overview documented RTMP custom stream targets, including YouTube. That supports the conclusion that the workflow was documented at the time, not that current account screens, labels, or YouTube ingest requirements remain unchanged. Before relying on it, confirm current YouTube target compatibility and setup instructions in your Wowza account or current product documentation. The older Wowza overview is historical context, not a current setup guarantee.

Keep Wowza Video and Streaming Engine costs separate
Wowza Streaming Engine is a separate product from Wowza Video’s 24/7 subscription model. Wowza’s current Streaming Engine pricing page lists Basic Monthly at $195 per month and One Month of Streaming at $295 as a one-time purchase; these are Streaming Engine prices, not the 24/7 Wowza Video channel fee. A cloud-hosted Engine deployment can also incur the hosting provider’s compute, storage, and bandwidth charges in addition to the license. Verify current terms on Wowza’s pricing page.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that continuously plays uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay running at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos sent to YouTube, not a camera-based live production. Start your free StreamNeo day.
