For a Wowza-to-YouTube live stream, use a fixed two-second keyframe interval, constant bitrate (CBR), and a YouTube-recommended ingest bitrate matched to the codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube says not to exceed a four-second keyframe interval. The exact Wowza controls depend on whether you use Wowza Video or Wowza Streaming Engine; the documented YouTube integration below is for Wowza Video.
Recommended settings for the YouTube-bound stream
| Setting | What to use | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | The video encoder or output sent to YouTube |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate) | The YouTube-bound encode |
| Video bitrate | Choose the matching value or range in YouTube’s live encoder table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate | YouTube ingest, not necessarily the source entering Wowza |
| Delivery protocol | RTMPS is recommended; RTMP is also supported | Wowza output to YouTube |
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance gives the two-second recommendation and four-second maximum, lists CBR, and provides bitrate guidance by format. Wowza’s YouTube Live integration guide repeats the keyframe limit. Set the interval explicitly where your encoder exposes it rather than relying on an automatic default.
Choose bitrate for the right stage
A Wowza workflow can have more than one bitrate. The source bitrate describes the video encoded before it enters Wowza. The YouTube ingest bitrate describes the output rendition Wowza sends to YouTube. They are different stages, and the source may be transcoded into one or more output renditions.
Set the YouTube output from YouTube’s table
- Decide the output codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send to YouTube.
- Open YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table and select the row for that combination.
- Configure the YouTube-bound rendition to use the corresponding video bitrate and CBR. Keep audio bitrate aligned with YouTube’s current guidance for the selected format.
- Confirm the output keyframe interval is two seconds and the delivery protocol is RTMPS where available.
There is no single correct bitrate for every 24/7 stream: resolution, frame rate, and codec change the applicable YouTube table entry. Avoid treating a source-encoding recommendation as a YouTube ingest target.

Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Interpret Wowza’s source bitrate figures carefully
Wowza’s recommended encoder bitrate table lists 3,200–6,000 Kbps as a supported 1080p source-video range and 4,400 Kbps as its recommended video bitrate. That is source-encoder guidance, not a substitute for YouTube’s ingest table. Wowza’s source encoding best practices also gives 6,000 Kbps as an example maximum source video bitrate for 1080p and recommends one- or two-second keyframe intervals. Use those figures only when configuring the source entering Wowza, and select the YouTube output bitrate separately.
Configure the Wowza-to-YouTube connection
The documented setup path here is Wowza Video. Its guide uses a selected output rendition and the stream URL and key generated in YouTube Studio. Exact controls can vary by product and interface version; do not assume Wowza Streaming Engine has the same workflow or labels.

- Create or open the YouTube live stream in YouTube Studio. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a screenshot.
- Open the relevant Wowza Video live stream and configure its output. Select the rendition intended for YouTube and set its codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and two-second keyframe interval according to YouTube’s current table.
- Enter YouTube’s connection details in Wowza. Use the YouTube server URL and key. Choose RTMPS if the Wowza output configuration offers it; YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends encrypted RTMPS delivery.
- Start the Wowza stream and check YouTube Studio’s preview and stream health. Confirm that the intended resolution and frame rate arrive and that YouTube reports no ingest issue before relying on the feed.
If Wowza is transcoding, verify the settings on the rendition delivered to YouTube, not just on the incoming source. If it is configured for passthrough, the source’s codec, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval may carry through; verify that the actual output meets YouTube’s requirements.
Plan for 24/7 operation and 4K limits
“24/7” describes the intended continuous operation, not a universal capability across every Wowza product, plan, or configuration. Wowza Video’s Live Stream Setup documentation says a 24×7 channel runs until stopped manually or by a schedule, and that the described 24×7 setup does not support 4K. Check the current limits for your specific Wowza product and subscription before building a 4K workflow or assuming a channel will remain active indefinitely.

For any continuous stream, verify that the source stays available, the Wowza output remains connected, and the YouTube stream key and schedule are correct. Monitor the YouTube preview and stream health after startup and after making encoding changes.
Troubleshoot common ingest problems
- YouTube reports an invalid or missing stream: check that the server URL and stream key were copied from the intended YouTube Studio stream and that the stream is active in Wowza. Re-enter the key if it was changed or regenerated.
- Connection fails or is not encrypted: verify the selected protocol and endpoint. Prefer RTMPS where supported, and ensure the Wowza output is using the matching YouTube URL rather than an unrelated endpoint.
- Warnings about keyframes or unstable playback: set the YouTube-bound encoder to a fixed two-second keyframe interval, staying below YouTube’s four-second maximum. Check the output rendition, particularly if Wowza transcodes.
- Bitrate warnings, buffering, or dropped frames: compare the YouTube-bound codec, resolution, and frame rate with the matching YouTube bitrate-table entry. Also distinguish output bitrate from source bitrate; a source value alone does not establish that the YouTube rendition is correctly configured.
- The expected resolution is unavailable: confirm the selected Wowza output rendition and the limits of the specific product and plan. In the documented Wowza Video 24×7 setup, 4K is unsupported.
- A continuous channel stops unexpectedly: check Wowza’s schedule and whether the channel was stopped manually, then inspect the source and output connection. The documented Wowza Video setup allows a 24×7 channel to run until a manual stop or scheduled stop; this behavior should not be assumed for other Wowza products.
