Choose World of Warcraft: Forever if you want Blizzard’s announced original-world experience to grow with new stories and updates; choose Classic Era if you want original-era WoW that does not progress into expansions. The catch is timing: as of October 4, 2026, Forever is announced for November 4, not yet playable. “WoW Classic” can also mean several different versions, and some Anniversary realms have already advanced into Burning Crusade Classic.
What is WoW Forever?
Blizzard describes World of Warcraft: Forever as a new permanent home alongside modern and Classic WoW. Its announced setting falls after the events of Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core. Players will return to the original continents, adventure to level 60, and continue through new stories, experiences, and updates inspired by player feedback.
Blizzard announced a global launch for November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PDT; the beta began September 17. That makes Forever an upcoming option on this article’s October 4, 2026 date. Blizzard has outlined a direction and schedule, not every system or future update. The announcement does not establish that Forever is identical to the 2004 release or to Classic Era.
What does “WoW Classic” mean now?
Classic is an umbrella for multiple versions, not one shared progression path. Blizzard’s Classic product hub lists Classic Hardcore, Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition, Mists of Pandaria Classic, and Season of Discovery alongside other Classic experiences. Blizzard says character progress does not carry over between Classic versions.

Classic Era: original-era content without expansion progression
Classic Era is the most direct match if you want to stay in the original-era game. Blizzard’s 2021 explanation of the Classic split describes Era realms as pointing to the latest phase of original WoW content, without advancing into expansion content.
Anniversary PvE and PvP: now in Burning Crusade Classic
Blizzard introduced the 20th Anniversary PvE and PvP realms as fresh realms with quality-of-life features already present and announced that they would progress to Burning Crusade Classic. Its February 2026 update says Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary is live. The original fresh-start announcement describes their launch condition, not a guarantee about today’s economy or population.

Anniversary Hardcore: a separate, high-risk ruleset
Blizzard said Anniversary Hardcore realms progress through Classic Era content but do not progress into Burning Crusade Classic. Hardcore also changes the stakes: Blizzard’s 2023 rules announcement says a character who dies on a Hardcore realm cannot be resurrected there, though the dead character can be moved to a non-Hardcore Era realm. It is not simply a PvE or PvP preference.
Other Classic paths
Season of Discovery and Mists of Pandaria Classic are also part of Blizzard’s current Classic catalog. They are distinct experiences, so neither should be treated as another name for Classic Era or Anniversary progression.

Compare the paths by what you want to play
| Option | Content path | Rules or timing | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| World of Warcraft: Forever | Announced for the original continents, level 60, and new stories, experiences, and updates. | Scheduled for November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PDT; upcoming as of October 4, 2026. | You want a permanent original-world experience that Blizzard says will continue to receive new content. |
| Classic Era | Original-era content; does not progress into expansion content. | Available as a distinct Classic path. | You want original-era WoW without moving into expansions. |
| Anniversary PvE/PvP | Has progressed into Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary. | Choose between PvE and PvP realm rules; the launch-era fresh start is not a statement about current conditions. | You want the Anniversary progression path and its expansion content. |
| Anniversary Hardcore | Progresses through Classic Era content, not Burning Crusade Classic. | Character death is permanent on the Hardcore realm; transfer to non-Hardcore Era is possible for a dead character. | You specifically want the consequences and challenge of Hardcore. |
Which should you play?
Pick Classic Era if you want the original endpoint
Choose Classic Era if your priority is level-60-era content that remains outside expansion progression. It is the clearest currently available match for “original WoW, and keep it there.”
Wait for Forever if you want the announced evolving version
Choose Forever if Blizzard’s plan for new stories, experiences, and updates in the original world sounds more appealing than a fixed original-era endpoint. Because launch is still in the future on October 4, 2026, you cannot yet compare the live game’s systems or quality with Classic Era.

Choose Anniversary if you want Burning Crusade progression
The Anniversary PvE and PvP path is now in Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary, rather than remaining at original-era content. The chance to transfer Anniversary characters to Classic Era ended January 12, 2026; Blizzard said characters left on Anniversary realms continued to Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary. Do not plan around that expired transfer window.
Choose Hardcore only if its death rule is part of the appeal
Hardcore’s permanent character-death rule makes it a different commitment from choosing PvE or PvP. Pick it for that specific challenge, not as a synonym for either realm type.

Access and what is not yet established
Blizzard’s Classic product hub says an active WoW subscription or game time provides access to the listed Classic versions. The retrieved Forever announcement does not establish whether Forever will use those same access terms. Check Blizzard’s launch details before assuming it is included or requires a separate purchase.
Blizzard’s cited announcements do not provide comparative evidence for population, class balance, endgame quality, queues, social experience, server health, or monetization. Those are not reliable grounds for choosing between Forever and Classic Era until specific, current information is available.
