WordPress is a strong choice in 2026 if you want control over your website, deep publishing tools and room to extend it—and are prepared to manage hosting, updates, backups and security. If you would rather have one provider handle the infrastructure and keep technical upkeep to a minimum, a hosted builder such as Wix or Squarespace may suit you better. The best option depends less on which platform is universally “best” and more on how much control and responsibility you want.

What WordPress is—and what “WordPress” means

WordPress is open-source website software used for blogs, business websites, portfolios, magazines, communities, enterprise portals and applications. WordPress.org says it powers more than 43% of the web; that is WordPress.org’s own stated figure, not an independently verified measurement in this review. The software can be modified and used commercially without licensing fees, and thousands of plugins extend its capabilities. WordPress.org features

The project began in 2003 and is licensed under GPLv2. Its stated mission is to “democratize publishing”: the software aims to be usable by people with limited technical experience while remaining customizable for technical users. WordPress.org About

In this review, self-hosted WordPress means the open-source software downloaded from WordPress.org and installed on hosting you choose. WordPress.com is a hosted service, with its own plans and product arrangements. They are related, but the terms are not interchangeable; compare the specific WordPress.com plan and current terms with the self-hosted setup before deciding.

Is WordPress worth it in 2026?

It is worth considering if your priorities include owning and moving your site’s content, choosing your hosting, customizing the site extensively, or building a publication that may grow beyond a simple brochure. WordPress’s combination of open-source software and a broad plugin ecosystem gives site owners substantial flexibility.

That flexibility shifts work to you. With self-hosted WordPress, someone must select and pay for hosting, keep the software and its components current, arrange backups, and respond to security issues. You can do that yourself or pay a managed host or agency, but the software’s lack of a license fee does not make the whole website free to operate.

Decision factor Self-hosted WordPress Hosted website builder
Control and portability Choose hosting and customize the installation; control and portability are a central advantage. Convenient within one vendor’s service; portability and control depend on that provider’s tools and terms.
Setup and editing Requires hosting setup and more operational decisions; the learning curve is steeper. Typically bundles the site editor and infrastructure to reduce setup and maintenance work.
Hosting and upkeep You or a paid provider handle hosting, backups, updates and security. The provider handles underlying infrastructure; the precise division of duties varies by service.
Extensibility Thousands of plugins and themes support a wide range of additions and customizations. Uses the provider’s built-in tools and supported integrations; choices depend on the platform.
Publishing depth Well suited to content-heavy sites and varied publishing needs. May be simpler for sites that mainly need standard pages and built-in all-in-one tools.
Total cost Depends on hosting, domain registration, paid themes or plugins, backups, security and maintenance; no total can be stated without your setup. Depends on the provider and plan; compare current prices and included services for your location.

This is a practical comparison, not a claim that every builder has identical features or that every WordPress installation costs more or less. Compare the actual service, plan and support you would use. A 2026 third-party overview discusses WordPress.com and WordPress alongside other builders, but provider pricing and features can change; verify them directly before purchase. Is WordPress good for a small-business website?

It can be a good fit for a small business that wants to publish articles, service pages, a portfolio or other content and expects to customize or expand the site. The software is designed to accommodate both less-technical users and technical customization, but that does not remove the need to choose hosting and maintain a self-hosted installation.

A hosted builder is often the more practical choice when the business needs a straightforward site and does not want to take responsibility for infrastructure or coordinate a separate host or maintenance provider. Decide who will handle updates, backups and security after launch—not just who will build the first version.

What hosting does WordPress need in 2026?

For a self-hosted site, WordPress.org recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS. Apache or Nginx is recommended. Older PHP or MySQL versions may still run WordPress, but WordPress.org identifies them as end-of-life and warns that they may expose a site to security vulnerabilities. Confirm the server versions and HTTPS support with a prospective host before installing WordPress. WordPress.org server requirements

The software has no licensing fee, but a self-hosted site still has operating costs. As a practical consequence of the responsibilities involved, budget for a domain, hosting, backups, security monitoring and maintenance—or for a managed provider or agency to take on some of that work. The actual total depends on your choices, so there is no single WordPress price that applies to every site.

How much maintenance does WordPress require?

Maintenance is ongoing rather than a one-time setup task. WordPress.org says only the latest version is officially supported. Its security team may backport critical fixes to older versions as a courtesy, and some security releases use automatic updates. That is not a substitute for keeping the whole installation current: themes, plugins and server software are also part of the maintenance surface. WordPress.org security

  • Keep WordPress core, themes, plugins and server software current.
  • Maintain backups so you have a recovery point if an update or security incident damages the site.
  • Choose themes and plugins deliberately, since each adds another component to maintain.
  • Decide whether you will do this work or pay a managed provider or agency to handle it.

How much time this takes varies with the site, its extensions and who provides support; the official guidance does not establish a universal weekly maintenance figure. If you do not want to own these tasks, include their cost and responsibility in the comparison rather than treating them as optional.

What is on WordPress’s 2026 roadmap?

WordPress’s official roadmap says version 7.0 is intended to advance Phase 3 collaboration features, client-side media handling, responsive styling controls and expanded block tools, with three major releases planned in 2026. These are plans, not guarantees that a feature is already available: roadmap targets may change, so check the relevant release information before choosing WordPress for a feature you need now. WordPress.org or WordPress.com?

Choose self-hosted WordPress from WordPress.org when choosing your own hosting and controlling the installation matter enough to justify handling—or outsourcing—its operation. Consider WordPress.com when a hosted service is a closer match for how you want to set up and run a site, but compare its current plan details with the specific features, flexibility and responsibilities you need. A label alone does not settle the choice: verify what the particular plan includes and what it lets you manage.

Who should choose WordPress?

  • Choose self-hosted WordPress if you value control, portability, extensive customization or a flexible publishing platform, and have a plan for hosting and maintenance.
  • Choose a hosted builder if you value a simpler setup and one vendor managing infrastructure more than you value control over the underlying site.
  • Pause before choosing if you need a particular feature, integration or total cost. Confirm it for the exact platform and plan you intend to use rather than assuming every WordPress setup or builder includes it.
