A strong Wordle opener tests several different, common letters in plausible positions; there is no single word that is best for every player or every scoring method. Choose an objective—such as narrowing likely answers, reducing average guesses, or using a memorable word—and use the green, yellow, and gray feedback to guide each next guess.

What makes a Wordle starting word useful?

Wordle gives you six guesses to find a five-letter target. Green tiles mark letters in the correct positions; yellow tiles mean a letter is in the answer but belongs elsewhere; gray tiles generally rule a letter out, though repeated letters can make tile counts less intuitive.

An opener can win immediately, but its more common strategic value is information: its color pattern can divide the possible answers into smaller groups. A word with five distinct letters usually tests more possibilities than one that repeats a letter. Position also matters: a letter in a plausible answer position may turn green, while a misplaced one may still narrow where it can go.

These are practical heuristics, not guarantees. A word’s ranking depends on which answers a method considers possible and what it tries to optimize. General letter frequency, expected remaining candidates, information gain, average guesses, real player results, and the chance of an immediate solve are different measures.

Choose an opener for your goal

For a reliable everyday routine

Pick a familiar word with five distinct, common letters in plausible positions—SLATE, CRANE, or TRACE are examples discussed in analyses of Wordle openers. Ease of recall matters: a starter you can spell confidently and use consistently makes it easier to interpret feedback and learn a routine. You do not need to change words in pursuit of a universal winner.

For candidate reduction

One independent analysis ranked IRATE, RAISE, and ARISE first, second, and third by expected remaining candidates across its tracked set of 1,810 answers. It estimated about 47.6 expected answers left for IRATE and 48.4 for RAISE. Those are results for that third-party corpus and metric, not an official New York Times ranking or a guarantee about the live answer list. See NYT Game Solver’s method and ranking.

For positional letter coverage

TechRadar’s analysis favored SLATE using position-specific letter frequencies; it reported E, A, R, O, and T as the most frequent letters in the answer list it analyzed. Those frequencies describe that dataset, not a current official distribution. Its discussion also describes SALET as an optimization result under a separate method, while noting that SALET was not included in the older 2,309-word answer list it examined. That older-list detail should not be treated as a current eligibility check. Read the positional-frequency analysis.

For a possible first-guess solve

If an immediate win matters to you, check whether your chosen opener is eligible as an answer in the game’s current list. Eligibility can change, and a word that is useful for testing letters is not necessarily a possible target. No cited analysis establishes a timeless list of eligible starters.

Why vowel-heavy openers are not automatically better

ADIEU and AUDIO are popular because they test several vowels, but discovering vowels alone does not necessarily narrow the answer set as effectively as testing a broader mix of letters and positions. In an analysis of roughly half a billion player games, New York Times writers Josh Katz and Aatish Bhatia found that ADIEU starters averaged about one-third of a turn more than SLATE starters; the reported failure rates were 3.6% for ADIEU starters and 1.7% for SLATE starters.

This was an observational comparison, not a controlled test of the two words. The authors cautioned, “We can’t say for certain that starting with ADIEU causes players to do worse.” Players who choose different starters may differ in other ways, so these figures describe observed outcomes rather than proving that one opener caused the difference. See the New York Times analysis.

Use the tiles to make the next guess count

  1. Keep every green in place. A confirmed letter and position are constraints, not suggestions.
  2. Move yellow letters. Use them again only in positions not already ruled out.
  3. Eliminate gray letters carefully. A gray tile usually rules out that letter, but if your guess repeated a letter, interpret the pattern with the target’s possible letter count in mind.
  4. Choose between solving and testing. If several answers remain, use a plausible answer that also tests useful untried letters when possible. A dedicated information guess can be helpful, but it spends one of your six turns without directly naming a candidate.

In a 2022 simulation, Prof. Barry Smyth’s team at the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics evaluated strategies on a pool of 2,500 five-letter words across one million simulated games. The release reported that 95% of games were solved within six guesses and took about four rounds on average under the study’s setup. It also said that starting with a suitable one- or two-word set performed better in that experiment than relying on a three-word set. These are simulator results for that pool, not a promise about current Wordle play. Read the Insight SFI report.

How to compare competing starting-word advice

Before adopting a ranking, check what it measures and which word list it uses. A solver that minimizes expected remaining candidates may favor a different word from a frequency-based method or an analysis of human games. A mathematically efficient word may also be unfamiliar or ineligible as an answer, while a memorable opener may be more enjoyable to use.

Word or approach What the cited analysis says Best interpreted as
IRATE, RAISE, ARISE Top three in an independent expected-remaining-candidates ranking over 1,810 tracked answers. Candidate reduction for that corpus and metric.
SLATE Used as a benchmark against ADIEU in the NYT player-outcome analysis; also favored by TechRadar’s positional-frequency method. Observed human outcomes and a separate position-based analysis—not a universal winner.
CRANE, TRACE Named among WordleBot-approved openers in the NYT analysis and discussed as varied-letter openings. Familiar options to consider, not a claim that one is always optimal.
SALET Favored by a separate optimization result discussed by TechRadar; the article notes it was absent from an older answer list. A method- and list-dependent optimum; check current answer eligibility if that matters to you.
ADIEU, AUDIO Vowel-heavy choices; the NYT observational comparison found worse average outcomes for ADIEU starters than SLATE starters, without establishing causation. A way to uncover vowels, not proof of better overall information.

Historical simulations and preprints used their own word lists, and later analyses may use different tracked answers. For example, an older letter-frequency paper is useful for understanding the method, but its counts should not be presented as the live NYT distribution. Read the historical character-statistics paper.

A simple way to settle on your own starter

  • Choose a word with distinct, common letters and plausible placements.
  • Make sure it is easy for you to remember and spell.
  • Use it consistently for a while so you can learn how its feedback narrows answers.
  • Judge it by the outcome you care about—candidate elimination, average guesses, solving within six, a chance at a first-guess win, or simply enjoying the puzzle.
