A Wordle guess must be a valid five-letter entry, but an accepted guess is not necessarily eligible to be the answer. For repeated letters, the game assigns exact matches first and only marks remaining copies as present if the answer still contains them. Sharing is available in Discord’s licensed Wordle Activity; that documentation does not establish exactly what the current New York Times website shares.

What words are valid guesses in Wordle?

Each guess must be a valid five-letter word, and you have six tries. The game indicates how close each guess is by changing the tile colors, according to Discord’s Wordle FAQ, updated May 20, 2025. A rejected entry is not being recognized as a valid guess by the game; try another five-letter entry.

Can a guess be accepted but not be the answer?

Yes. Wordle has a larger set of accepted guesses and a smaller pool of possible answers. A word can therefore be accepted for a turn without being eligible to appear as that day’s solution.

The American Mathematical Society explained this distinction in June 2022, reporting 12,957 accepted words split between possible answers and other guesses, with approximately 2,300 possible answers at that time. Those are historical figures, not current list totals. The New York Times’ answer list was described as curated separately from its larger valid-guess dictionary in The Washington Post’s November 7, 2022 report. The policy and examples in that report describe the list at that date; they do not establish whether a particular word is currently eligible as an answer.

Can Wordle have repeated letters?

Yes. A solution can contain the same letter more than once. To understand duplicate-letter colors, count exact matches first, then check whether any unmatched copies remain in the answer.

  1. Mark letters in the correct position as green.
  2. Set those exact matches aside when counting the remaining answer letters.
  3. For each other copy in your guess, mark it yellow only if the answer still has an unmatched copy of that letter. Otherwise, mark it gray.

Why did one of my repeated letters turn gray?

The answer contains fewer copies of that letter than your guess. Wordle accounts for green, exact-position matches first, then marks only as many remaining copies as the answer still contains.

The American Mathematical Society illustrates the rule with answer DECOY and guess ODDER: the answer contains one D, so only one of the two guessed Ds can be marked as present. The other D is gray once the answer’s single copy has been accounted for. See its June 1, 2022 explanation of Wordle’s letter feedback.

How do I share my Wordle results?

In Discord’s licensed Wordle Activity, the support instructions say to press “Share” after completing the daily puzzle to share your score with friends. Discord also says its daily answer matches the New York Times game for that day. These details apply to Discord’s Activity, as described in its Wordle FAQ.
