Yes, you can combine a WIZnet W5100S, a Raspberry Pi Pico and Power over Ethernet, but the original W5100S-EVB-Pico is not documented as PoE-powered. For a modular Pico build, use a Raspberry Pi Pico with WIZnet Pico PoE and a compatible W5100S-IO module. Another route is WIZnet’s W5100S-EVB-Pico2 with the separate WIZPoE-P1 module. Ethernet provides network connectivity; PoE requires additional power hardware.

Which W5100S and Pico setup supports PoE?

WIZnet documents three relevant hardware paths. They differ in how much is integrated, how PoE is added and which Pico-generation MCU is used.

Hardware path What it includes Power and Ethernet Best fit
W5100S-EVB-Pico RP2040 board with W5100S, 10/100 Ethernet PHY, RJ45 and SPI connection Ethernet is integrated; the product page specifies Micro-USB power/data and does not document PoE input. A simple Pico-style Ethernet board when separate USB or VSYS power is acceptable. WIZnet product documentation
Raspberry Pi Pico + WIZnet Pico PoE + W5100S-IO A Pico-mountable PoE carrier and a compatible WIZnet W5100S-IO module The carrier is documented for IEEE 802.3af PoE, Mode A and Mode B, and provides regulated outputs. A modular Pico build where PoE is a requirement. WIZnet Pico PoE documentation
W5100S-EVB-Pico2 + WIZPoE-P1 An RP2350-based W5100S Ethernet board plus the separate WIZPoE-P1 PoE module WIZnet identifies WIZPoE-P1 as the PoE route for this board family. A newer Pico-compatible board path with PoE added through the specified module. WIZnet W5100S-EVB-Pico2 documentation

For the direct combination in the question, the clearest modular choice is Raspberry Pi Pico + WIZnet Pico PoE + W5100S-IO. Do not assume that adding a PoE switch or injector to the original W5100S-EVB-Pico will power it: its product documentation lists Micro-USB power/data, not a PoE input.

What the WIZnet Pico PoE carrier provides

WIZnet describes Pico PoE as a carrier board that mounts to a Raspberry Pi Pico and accepts WIZnet IO modules, including W5100S, W5500 and W6100. Its documentation states IEEE 802.3af compliance and support for Mode A and Mode B. The WIZnet PoE family page also lists Pico PoE as an 8 W, 5 V, 802.3af product. WIZnet PoE product family

HiLetgo 2pcs W5500 Ethernet LAN Network Module Support TCP/IP51/STM32 Microcontroller Program with 32k Bytes SPI 3.3V/5V Over W5100
  • W5500 Ethernet LAN Network Module Support TCP/IP51/STM32
  • Supports 8 independent sockets simultaneously, Wake on LAN over UDP
  • Supports High Speed Serial Peripheral Interface, Internal 32Kbytes Memory for TX/RX Buffers

The carrier’s electrical figures need to be read with their qualifications intact:

  • Input: WIZnet lists an input range of 37–57 V, while separately recommending 48–57 V. The broader range is not the same as the recommended operating range.
  • Outputs: The documentation lists 5 V at 1.6 A and a 3.3 V LDO output at 1 A.
  • Power and isolation: WIZnet specifies up to 8 W and 2 kVrms isolation.
  • Temperature: The recommended maximum operating temperature is 70 °C.

These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that every attached Pico, module and peripheral can draw the maximum simultaneously. Check the requirements of the complete load and the PoE source before choosing an injector or switch. WIZnet’s figures are published without a stated year on the product page.

What to know about the original W5100S-EVB-Pico

The W5100S-EVB-Pico combines an RP2040, 2 MB flash and W5100S Ethernet controller on a Pico-style board. WIZnet lists 10/100 Ethernet, auto-negotiation, four hardware sockets and 16 kB of internal TX/RX buffer memory. Supported protocols listed on the page include TCP, UDP, WOL over UDP, ICMP, IGMPv1/v2, IPv4, ARP and PPPoE. WIZnet product documentation

The product page documents nominal 5 V VBUS over Micro-USB and VSYS from 4.3–5.5 V. It does not describe PoE input. Ethernet capability and PoE power are separate: the W5100S handles networking, while a compatible PoE receiver arrangement supplies power from the Ethernet cable.

GPIO reserved for Ethernet

On the W5100S-EVB-Pico, WIZnet assigns six RP2040 GPIOs to the W5100S interface:

GPIO W5100S signal
GPIO16 MISO
GPIO17 CSn
GPIO18 SCLK
GPIO19 MOSI
GPIO20 Reset
GPIO21 Interrupt

WIZnet says these pins cannot be used for other purposes while using Ethernet. Account for that pin budget when planning sensors, displays or other peripherals. The product page records board revision 1.0 in October 2021 and revision 1.1 in April 2022; those revision dates are not publication dates for every current specification.

hiBCTR 2-Pack W5500 Ethernet LAN Module, SPI, 3.3V/5V
  • Hardware TCP/IP Stack: Integrated TCP/UDP/ICMP/IPv4/PPPoE protocols with 32KB TX/RX buffers.
  • Multi-Connection Support: Manages 8 simultaneous sockets + Wake-on-LAN via UDP.
  • Dual Voltage Operation: 3.3V core with 5V I/O tolerance for STM32/Arduino compatibility.
  • High-Speed SPI Interface: SPI Mode 0/3 support @ 80MHz for real-time control scenarios.
  • Industrial-Grade PHY: Embedded 10/100Mbps Ethernet PHY with auto-negotiation (full/half duplex).

How to choose between the three paths

  • Choose the original W5100S-EVB-Pico if an integrated Ethernet board matters more than PoE and you can power it separately over Micro-USB or VSYS.
  • Choose Pico + Pico PoE + W5100S-IO if you want a Raspberry Pi Pico-based modular assembly and PoE. Verify the carrier’s input recommendation and output budget against your PoE source and connected hardware.
  • Consider W5100S-EVB-Pico2 + WIZPoE-P1 if you want the RP2350-based board path and are prepared to add the specified PoE module. WIZnet documents PoE support via WIZPoE-P1; the W5100S controller alone is not the PoE power solution.

These are different assembly approaches, not interchangeable descriptions of one board. Confirm exactly which board, carrier or module is included when sourcing parts. WIZnet lists example categories for the original EVB-Pico that include C/C++, AWS, Azure, lwIP, FreeRTOS and CircuitPython; these are vendor-provided examples, not a guarantee of performance or setup effort for a particular project.

What else is needed for a PoE build?

A PoE-powered assembly needs a compatible IEEE 802.3af power source, such as a suitable PoE injector or switch, as well as the specified receiver/carrier hardware. The WIZnet Pico PoE documentation identifies its standards and power figures, but choosing a source still requires checking its standard and available power against the complete load. Do not treat a passive or otherwise incompatible Ethernet power source as equivalent to an IEEE 802.3af source.
