Short answer: Wired USB-C Power Delivery is a sensible choice when charging speed matters; MagSafe and Qi2 offer easier wireless charging, with speed depending on the iPhone and charger. Apple’s guidance does not show that wireless charging universally damages an iPhone battery more than wired charging. Temperature, charging habits, model compatibility, and the complete charger setup matter more than a blanket wired-versus-wireless rule.

Which charges an iPhone faster?

It depends on the iPhone model and the whole charging setup—not just the wattage printed on a charger. For speed, use a compatible USB-C Power Delivery adapter and cable. For wireless charging, Apple identifies MagSafe and Qi2-certified chargers as faster options on supported models. Many Qi-certified chargers charge recent iPhones at up to 7.5 W under Apple’s guidance, but that is a maximum, not a promise that every charger or phone will sustain it. See Apple’s iPhone charge-speed guidance and wireless charging instructions.

A charger’s advertised peak wattage is not the phone’s constant charging rate. Charging generally slows as the battery approaches full; Apple notes that it slows after about 80%. Battery level, phone use, adapter and cable capability, temperature, and the charging standard all affect the result.

How to interpret Apple’s charge-time figures

Apple says supported iPhone 8 or later models can reach about 50% in around 30 minutes with a specified fast-charge setup. That is a conditional result, not a universal promise for every iPhone, adapter, or starting battery level. Apple also publishes model-specific examples and test setups: its stated tests include preproduction iPhone 17e units tested in January 2026 with a USB-C cable and Apple 20 W adapter, and iPhone 17 family and iPhone Air testing in July 2025 with named adapters and MagSafe chargers. Apple warns that actual results vary with settings and environmental factors. Check its current fast-charge requirements and test details for your model before treating a figure as a prediction.

Does wireless charging make an iPhone hotter?

An iPhone battery warms while charging, and Apple says an iPhone might get slightly warmer during wireless charging. The phone’s temperature can also depend on the room, case, placement, charger, and what the phone is doing. Demanding apps during a charge can add to the practical problem when speed or temperature is a concern.

Apple says iOS may slow or pause charging in temperature extremes, and may limit charging above 80% if the battery gets too warm. These safeguards apply to charging behavior generally; they do not establish that wireless charging always runs hotter than wired charging, or by a particular amount. Apple’s battery maintenance guidance advises avoiding use or charging above an ambient temperature of 35°C (95°F), because high ambient heat can permanently reduce battery lifespan.

Is wired charging better for battery health?

Apple does not establish a universal battery-health advantage for wired charging over wireless charging. It explains that a battery’s chemical age reflects a combination of factors, including temperature history and charging pattern. In practice, avoid sustained high temperatures and use the charging-management features available on your iPhone rather than assuming one charging method is categorically healthier.

Use optimized charging or a charge limit when available

Optimized Battery Charging can reduce the time an iPhone spends fully charged: it may hold charging at 80% and finish nearer the time it expects you to unplug. It needs to learn a routine, so it may not activate consistently if your schedule or locations vary. The available controls depend on iPhone model and iOS version; Apple describes them in its iOS 27 battery-charging guide and iOS 26 charging guide.

Choosing a charging method

What matters Wired USB-C PD MagSafe or Qi2 wireless
Best fit Speed-focused charging with a compatible adapter and cable. Convenience without plugging in; MagSafe adds magnetic alignment.
Speed Depends on model, adapter, cable, battery level, and use. Depends on model and wireless standard; Apple identifies MagSafe and Qi2 as faster wireless options on supported models.
Alignment Connect the cable to the phone and adapter or computer. Center the iPhone on the pad or follow the accessory’s placement instructions; MagSafe magnets help align the phone.
Potential interruption Charging can slow or pause due to temperature or other conditions. Misplacement, an interfering case, or temperature can affect charging; thermal safeguards still apply.
What to check before buying iPhone compatibility, adapter capability, and cable capability. iPhone compatibility, charger certification and standard, and any required adapter.

For an overnight charge, either method can be convenient. If charging seems to pause or slow, check Battery settings for a charging hold or slow-charger notice rather than assuming the phone or charger is faulty. If the iPhone is connected to USB while on a wireless charger, Apple says it charges through the wired connection.

Why is my iPhone charging slowly?

Check the simple causes in order. Exact compatibility and maximum rates vary by model, so use Apple’s current instructions for your iPhone.

  1. Check the charging equipment. For wired charging, use a compatible adapter and cable; for wireless, use a compatible certified charger. Confirm the requirements in Apple’s charge-speed guidance.
  2. Reposition a wireless phone. Center it on the pad or follow the charger’s placement instructions. For MagSafe, let the magnets align the phone.
  3. Remove an interfering case. A thick, metal, or battery case may interfere with wireless charging. Remove it temporarily to see whether charging improves.
  4. Reduce activity during a speed-critical charge. Close or stop demanding apps while charging if practical.
  5. Move the setup somewhere cooler if the iPhone feels unusually warm. Temperature management can slow or pause charging; avoid charging in ambient temperatures above 35°C (95°F).
  6. Check Battery settings. Look for a charging hold or a slow-charger notice, then check whether charging resumes after the phone cools or the setup changes.
