If Wirecast is sending a YouTube live stream with a black picture, first find where the video disappears: in Wirecast, in a local recording, in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, or only on the viewer’s playback device. That signal-path check determines whether to investigate the media source and encoder, stream delivery, or the viewer’s browser.
Find the first point where the picture goes black
Check these points in order and note whether audio continues at each one. Comparing them is more useful than changing settings at random.
- Wirecast: Inspect the media source and the program output being sent to YouTube. Is the source visible in the preview, and does the program output show it?
- Local recording: If Wirecast is recording or archiving the production, play the file and check whether the picture is present.
- YouTube Live Control Room: Compare its preview with Wirecast’s output and read any stream-health messages.
- Viewer playback: Open the public watch page on another device or browser. If possible, test a different network too.
YouTube advises checking the stream directly in the encoder. If its output looks bad, investigate routed audio and video sources, encoder errors, CPU load, and the local archive. If encoder output looks healthy, test the outbound internet connection. This comparison helps narrow the fault; it does not establish a Wirecast-specific root cause. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance
If Wirecast or the local recording is black
A black preview or archive points to a problem at or before the encoder output, rather than proving that YouTube is the cause. Check whether the problem affects one clip or every video source.
Check the media source and output routing
- Confirm the intended media file or source is loaded, selected, and active.
- Check that it is routed to the program output you are sending to YouTube. A source visible in a preview is not enough if the outgoing program uses a different shot or layer.
- Compare the media playback with another video source in the same production. If only one clip is black, investigate that asset; if all video is black, examine the wider production and encoder path.
- Compare Wirecast’s output with the local recording, if available. Note whether the fault affects all video, only media playback, or video while audio remains.
Check encoder status and system load
Look for encoder error indicators and unusually high CPU load. Compare what Wirecast shows with the local archive and update the encoder software if an update is available. YouTube identifies routed sources, encoder errors, CPU load, and the local archive as relevant checks when encoder output looks poor. YouTube Help: troubleshoot live stream issues
You can also test a known-good clip to see whether the issue is limited to one media asset. That is a diagnostic step, not proof of a particular codec or file defect. If you suspect a Wirecast-specific setting or media-format compatibility issue, check current Telestream Wirecast documentation and support rather than relying on old instructions: a legacy Wirecast for YouTube guide is too dated to confirm current controls.

If Wirecast looks good but YouTube is black
When the encoder output and local recording look normal, move downstream. Compare Wirecast with the Live Control Room preview, inspect stream-health messages, then test the watch page on another device or network.
- Live Control Room is black too: Check its health messages and test the outbound connection. A healthy local output with delivery problems warrants attention to the connection between the encoder and YouTube.
- Live Control Room looks normal, but the watch page is black: Test the page in another browser or on another device. This helps separate a viewer playback issue from a stream-wide problem.
- Many viewers on different connections report the same black picture: Recheck the encoder and outgoing stream. YouTube notes that a problem affecting multiple viewers may point to the encoder.
YouTube recommends checking audio and movement before an event, monitoring stream health and messages during it, and verifying playback on the channel or watch page and on mobile devices. YouTube Help: live streaming tips · YouTube Help: streaming settings and encoder guidance

Do not reset or rotate the stream key just because the picture is black. YouTube’s stream-key reset advice applies to a different symptom: the encoder cannot start streaming.
If only one browser or device shows a blank or green player
Test the same watch page in another browser or on another device. If the issue is specifically a green YouTube video with audible sound, YouTube recommends trying another browser, turning off hardware acceleration in Chrome, and updating the graphics driver. These are viewer-side playback checks; they are not established fixes for Wirecast media playback or a black outgoing stream. YouTube Help: troubleshoot a green player

Prevent a repeat before the next broadcast
- Run a controlled test stream before the event, using audio and moving video similar to the planned program.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages during the test.
- Verify the public watch page on another device, including mobile playback.
- Monitor audio and video throughout the stream, and confirm that the local archive is growing and plays back correctly.
- Allow upload capacity above the combined bitrate of the stream. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; this is platform guidance, not a guarantee against black video. YouTube Help: streaming tips
