To winterize an outdoor faucet, first disconnect and drain every hose and attachment. Then check whether the faucet has a dedicated indoor shutoff: close that valve, open the outdoor faucet to drain the line, and leave the outdoor faucet open. If there is no indoor shutoff, or the faucet is frost-free, the right steps differ—but removing the hose is essential in every case. A cover and pipe insulation can reduce risk, but neither guarantees that plumbing will not freeze.
What do I need before winterizing an outdoor faucet?
You can usually handle routine winterization yourself. Before you begin, identify the faucet’s shutoff arrangement and gather any cover or insulation needed for exposed plumbing.
- Locate a dedicated indoor shutoff valve, if one serves the outdoor faucet. It may be near where the water line exits the house, in a basement, crawl space, utility room, or mechanical area.
- Check whether the exterior faucet is a conventional hose bib or a frost-free/frost-resistant sillcock. A frost-free sillcock is designed to shut off farther inside the structure and drain when the hose is removed.
- Have a molded-foam outdoor faucet cover for an exposed faucet, and foam pipe insulation sleeves for vulnerable pipe runs where appropriate.
- If you may need to work near plumbing in a garage, crawl space, or other unheated area, make sure you can reach the pipes safely. Do not enter an unsafe or inaccessible space just to complete routine winterization.
The procedure can vary with the plumbing layout, installation, insulation, local exposure, and the faucet manufacturer’s instructions. If you cannot tell which valve controls a faucet, do not assume a nearby valve is the right one; ask a licensed plumber to identify it.

Choose the procedure that matches your setup
The key questions are whether there is a dedicated indoor shutoff, what kind of faucet is installed, and whether the pipe run is exposed to cold. A conventional faucet with a dedicated shutoff can be isolated and drained. A frost-free sillcock is designed to drain when its hose is removed, but still depends on free drainage and appropriate installation. If you cannot identify the configuration, avoid guessing: the wrong valve or an undrained line can leave water trapped.

Pipe exposure also matters. A faucet on a sheltered wall with plumbing within conditioned space faces different conditions from a faucet with a pipe run through an unheated garage, crawl space, attic, or exterior wall. The longer and more severe a freeze, the more important it is to consider additional protection for vulnerable plumbing. No single product replaces the steps that fit the faucet and pipe layout.
How do I winterize outdoor faucets?
Follow this sequence for each outdoor faucet: remove attachments, identify the setup, isolate and drain the line when there is a shutoff, then protect exposed plumbing. Removing the hose comes first whether the faucet is conventional or frost-free.
- Disconnect the hose and attachments. Remove the garden hose, timer, splitter, quick-connect fitting, and anything else attached to the faucet. Drain the hose and store it where it will not freeze. A connected hose can trap water at the faucet and interfere with drainage, even on a frost-free model.
- Find the indoor shutoff, if there is one. Look for a dedicated valve serving the outdoor faucet. If you are unsure which line it controls, have the line identified rather than closing a valve at random.
- Close the indoor shutoff when the faucet has one. Turn the valve off to isolate the outdoor branch line. If the valve is damaged, stuck, or leaking, do not force it; get help from a plumber.
- Open the outdoor faucet to drain residual water. With the indoor shutoff closed, open the exterior faucet and let remaining water run out. Leave the outdoor faucet open after draining so residual water is not trapped in the line.
- Cover the exposed faucet. Once the hose is off and any line with an indoor shutoff has been drained, install a snug molded-foam hose-bib cover on a faucet exposed to freezing air. Follow the cover’s installation instructions.
- Protect vulnerable pipe runs. Inspect exposed or poorly protected plumbing in garages, crawl spaces, basements, attics, exterior walls, and around pipe penetrations. Insulate appropriate pipes and seal cold-air leaks around penetrations. Keep garage doors closed when water lines run through the garage.
For a conventional faucet with a dedicated indoor valve, the order matters: disconnect the hose, close the indoor valve, then open the outside faucet to drain the branch. Do not close the indoor valve and assume the job is finished; water remaining in the line still needs a way out. Leaving the exterior faucet open after draining helps avoid trapping residual water in the isolated line.

Remove all attachments, protect the exposed faucet and vulnerable pipe runs, and get a plumber’s advice if the line is at risk or the plumbing arrangement is unclear. Do not turn off the main water supply just to protect one faucet unless there is a separate reason to do so.
FEMA household winterization guidance says to disconnect hoses and cover faucets. A faucet cover is an additional layer of protection, not a substitute for removing the hose or draining and isolating a line when that setup calls for it.
Should I shut off the water to my outside faucet in winter?
If the faucet has a dedicated indoor shutoff, closing it for winter is generally part of the routine winterization procedure. Opening the exterior faucet afterward is just as important: shutting off the supply alone does not remove residual water from the outdoor branch line.

If there is no dedicated indoor shutoff, do not assume the entire home’s main water supply should be turned off just to protect one faucet. Remove the hose and attachments, protect the exposed faucet and vulnerable plumbing, and consult a licensed plumber if the pipe layout or risk is unclear. A plumber can also advise whether the plumbing should be changed to provide a suitable shutoff.
What is different about a frost-free outdoor faucet?
A frost-free or frost-resistant sillcock is designed so its shutoff sits farther inside the structure, where it is less exposed to outside cold, and the faucet can drain when the hose is removed. It still needs its hose disconnected before freezing weather.
Why does the hose still have to come off?
A hose, timer, or other attachment can retain water at the faucet and prevent the sillcock from draining as designed. The label “frost-free” describes the faucet’s design; it does not guarantee protection in every installation or weather condition.
Does a frost-free faucet need a cover?
A cover can add protection when the faucet is exposed, but it is not a universal replacement for correct installation and drainage. Remove the hose first, and follow the faucet manufacturer’s instructions. Installation details, slope, insulation, exposure, and local conditions affect how well the faucet can drain and resist freezing.

How do I protect pipes inside the house?
Outdoor-faucet winterization protects only part of the system. Pipes in unheated or drafty areas can also freeze, particularly in garages, crawl spaces, attics, basements, exterior walls, and near openings where cold air enters.
- Insulate appropriate exposed pipe runs with pipe insulation sleeves.
- Seal cold-air leaks around pipe penetrations, while avoiding changes that create a safety or ventilation problem.
- Keep garage doors closed when water lines pass through the garage.
- Check pipes under sinks and in other cabinets near exterior walls, especially during a prolonged cold snap.
- Use heat cable only for especially vulnerable exposed pipes where it is appropriate. Choose UL-listed heat tape or heat cable, including thermostatically controlled products where suitable, and follow the manufacturer’s installation and use instructions.
Match the protection to the location. A molded-foam faucet cover is intended for an exposed hose bib; pipe insulation sleeves protect appropriate pipe runs; heat cable is a specialized option for especially vulnerable exposed pipe. These measures serve different purposes. A cover cannot drain a line, and insulation alone does not guarantee that a pipe will stay above freezing during prolonged severe cold.
Heat cable is a specialized measure, not a substitute for disconnecting hoses, shutting off an outdoor line when a dedicated valve is available, or draining the line. Never improvise an installation or use a product contrary to its instructions. Check that the product is UL-listed and use a thermostatically controlled model where appropriate; follow its specific installation instructions.

Cold-snap measures are temporary ways to reduce risk to vulnerable plumbing inside the home; they do not replace outdoor-faucet winterization. Keep the home heated, allow warmer indoor air to reach exposed plumbing where safe, and consider a small cold-water drip only for a faucet served by especially vulnerable plumbing.
Keep the house warm
Keep the thermostat at a steady setting rather than sharply lowering it overnight. If you will be away in cold weather, the American Red Cross advises keeping the heat on at no lower than 55°F. FEMA household guidance likewise says to keep the furnace running at 55°F or higher so the home stays above freezing. These are cold-weather precautions, not guarantees that every pipe will remain unfrozen.
Let warmer air reach vulnerable indoor pipes
Open cabinet doors beneath sinks when doing so is safe, so household heat can reach pipes in the cabinet. Avoid blocking vents or making changes that create another hazard.

When is a small drip useful?
During a severe cold snap, consider a small cold-water drip from a faucet served by exposed plumbing. It is a temporary risk-reduction measure for vulnerable indoor pipes, not a repair and not a replacement for removing hoses and draining outdoor faucet lines. It is not necessary to treat every faucet this way; focus on plumbing that is particularly exposed, and keep the rest of the home’s heating and insulation measures in place.
What should I do if an outdoor pipe freezes?
A faucet that produces only a trickle or no water at all may indicate a frozen pipe. If you can safely reach the suspected section, keep the faucet open while warming the pipe gently; stop and call a licensed plumber if the frozen area is inaccessible, cannot be located, or will not thaw.
- Keep the faucet open. This gives water a way to flow as the ice melts.
- Locate the suspected frozen section only if it is safely accessible. Check exposed pipe runs and areas that are especially cold. Do not open walls or enter hazardous spaces to search for a blockage.
- Use gentle, indirect heat. A hair dryer, an electric heating pad, or towels soaked in hot water are examples of safer methods. Monitor the pipe while warming it.
- Do not use an open flame or direct high heat. Never thaw pipes with a torch, kerosene heater, propane heater, or charcoal stove. Do not use electrical appliances in standing water.
- Call a licensed plumber when needed. Get professional help if the frozen section is inaccessible, cannot be found, will not thaw, or you cannot warm it safely.
If a pipe bursts or begins leaking, shut off the main water valve immediately and seek professional help. Know where the main shutoff is before freezing weather arrives. If water is standing near electrical equipment or outlets, do not use electrical appliances in the water; keep clear and contact appropriate emergency or professional help.
What should I avoid when winterizing or thawing pipes?
The most common preventable mistakes are leaving a hose connected, treating a cover or frost-free label as a guarantee, and shutting off the supply without draining the line.
- Do not leave a garden hose, timer, splitter, or other attachment connected through freezing weather.
- Do not assume a “frost-free” label protects a faucet under every installation or weather condition.
- Do not shut off the indoor supply and forget to open the outdoor faucet to drain residual water.
- Do not put antifreeze into water lines unless specifically directed; the American Red Cross cautions against doing so otherwise.
- Do not use an open flame or direct high heat to thaw a pipe.
- Do not use electrical appliances in standing water.
- Do not treat a faucet cover or heat cable as a replacement for the steps appropriate to the faucet’s configuration.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I winterize my outdoor faucets?
Do it before freezing weather is forecast, rather than waiting until a cold snap is underway. If temperatures have already fallen, disconnect the hose and proceed only with steps you can perform safely; call a plumber if a line may already be frozen or a shutoff is not working.
Can I leave the outdoor faucet open all winter?
If you closed a dedicated indoor shutoff and drained the outdoor line, leaving that exterior faucet open is part of the procedure. This does not mean leaving a faucet supplied by an open indoor valve running unattended.

Can I use antifreeze in an outdoor faucet line?
Do not add antifreeze to water lines unless specifically directed by a qualified professional or the applicable product instructions. The American Red Cross advises against putting antifreeze in these lines otherwise.
How can I tell whether an outdoor pipe has burst after thawing?
Once water is restored, look for new damp spots, dripping, or an unexplained flow of water near the faucet, along the pipe route, or inside the home. If you find a leak, shut off the main water valve immediately and arrange professional repair.
Do I need to cover a frost-free spigot?
A molded-foam cover can add protection to an exposed faucet, but a frost-free design is not a guarantee against every freeze. Disconnect the hose so the sillcock can drain, and follow the faucet manufacturer’s instructions.

Can I use heat tape on an outside water pipe?
UL-listed heat tape or heat cable may be appropriate for especially vulnerable exposed pipes. Follow the product’s installation instructions and use a thermostatically controlled product where suitable. It does not replace removing hoses or draining and isolating an outdoor line when possible.
What should I do if my outdoor faucet freezes?
Keep the faucet open and use gentle, indirect heat on a safely accessible suspected section, such as a hair dryer, electric heating pad, or hot-water-soaked towels. Never use an open flame, and call a licensed plumber if you cannot locate or safely thaw the frozen section.
The Bottom Line
Before freezing weather, disconnect and drain every hose and attachment. If an outdoor faucet has a dedicated indoor shutoff, close it, open the outside faucet to drain the branch, and leave the faucet open. Add a molded-foam cover and protect exposed pipe runs as appropriate, but do not treat a cover or “frost-free” label as a guarantee. If a pipe freezes, use gentle indirect heat only when it is safely accessible; for a burst, inaccessible, or stubborn freeze, shut off the main water if it is leaking and call a licensed plumber.
