Short answer: A spare Windows PC is a sensible first choice if it can sustain your actual OBS workload and your home internet can reliably upload the stream. A Windows VPS can move the work off your PC and home connection, but only if the specific plan supports Windows and has enough sustained encoding and network capacity at a total cost you accept. Neither option guarantees an uninterrupted stream.
What you are choosing between
Both approaches run an encoder such as OBS and send the resulting stream to YouTube. The key difference is where the encoding happens and which connection carries the stream.
- Spare PC: Your computer, power supply and home internet connection must remain available while OBS runs.
- Windows VPS: The work runs on a remotely hosted virtual server. You depend on that provider’s Windows support, encoding capacity, network, traffic terms and recovery behavior.
There is no established general uptime or lifetime-cost comparison that makes one architecture the universal winner. The choice depends on your actual stream workload, network and operating budget.
How the options compare
| Factor | Spare Windows PC | Windows VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding | Check whether its CPU or supported GPU encoder can sustain your OBS scene, resolution and frame rate. | Verify the plan’s actual CPU or hardware encoding capability. Do not assume a generic virtual CPU is equivalent to a GPU hardware encoder. |
| Upload path | Depends on the stability and upload capacity of your home connection. Test at the intended settings. | Depends on sustained provider upload, access to YouTube’s ingest endpoint and any traffic limits. Check the current plan terms. |
| Availability | The PC, power and home connection all need to stay available. No uptime figure is established for this setup. | Moves encoding off your personal computer, but no provider-specific uptime or recovery guarantee is established here. |
| Cost | Account for incremental electricity and any hardware or backup-power costs; actual consumption and local electricity prices vary. | Compare the recurring plan fee, Windows licensing, bandwidth or traffic charges, and any GPU charges. Provider prices are not established here. |
| Operations | You maintain the computer, OBS and home connection; test the stream and monitor its health. | You need to administer the remote server and verify Windows, encoder access, network capacity and recovery behavior. |
Can a spare PC run OBS all day?
Possibly, but basic compatibility is not proof that a machine can sustain your particular stream. OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its Windows requirements, while cautioning that meeting the basic requirements does not guarantee streaming capability. The load varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. See OBS system requirements.

Check the encoder and real workload
OBS supports hardware encoding options including NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF and Intel Quick Sync, subject to compatible hardware and drivers. Hardware encoding can move work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component and may reduce CPU performance impact. It is not a guarantee of adequate performance: test the chosen encoder with your actual scene and settings. See OBS hardware encoding.
A spare PC is most attractive when it already has suitable hardware, you are comfortable maintaining it, and your home connection is dependable. Remember that the machine, power and internet remain part of the stream path; a failure in any of them can interrupt the broadcast.

Can I use a Windows VPS to stream to YouTube 24/7?
Yes, if the particular VPS can run your chosen Windows setup and sustain the required encoding and upload workload. A VPS label alone does not establish that it has a capable GPU encoder, sufficient CPU capacity, an unrestricted traffic allowance or reliable throughput to YouTube.
Verify these plan details before committing
- Whether Windows is supported, and whether its license is included or billed separately.
- What encoding hardware or CPU capacity is actually available, including any limits on sustained use.
- The sustained outbound upload capacity and whether YouTube’s live ingest endpoints are reachable.
- Data-transfer limits, fair-use terms and overage charges.
- Any extra GPU or bandwidth fees, plus the total recurring cost.
- How you will remotely administer OBS and recover the stream if the server, software or connection fails.
Confirm these points in the provider’s current plan documentation. No specific VPS provider or plan has been verified here, so there is no supported provider recommendation or price comparison.

What upload speed do you need for a 24/7 YouTube livestream?
YouTube recommends these H.264 encoder bitrates: 5 Mbps for 1080p30, 6 Mbps for 1080p60, 7 Mbps for 1440p30 and 8 Mbps for 1440p60. These are encoder-setting recommendations, not a promise that an internet plan advertising the same upload speed will deliver a stable stream. YouTube advises choosing quality your connection can reliably support, testing before going live and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Use the bitrate as a starting point, then test on the connection and machine or VPS you intend to use. A speed test’s headline result alone does not establish sustained stability at your chosen stream settings.

Set up and test the DIY option you choose
- Define the stream. Decide the resolution, frame rate, scene complexity and encoder before evaluating hardware or a VPS. Those choices determine the workload.
- For a spare PC, check compatibility. Confirm it runs a supported Windows version and has compatible graphics hardware, then check whether OBS can use a supported hardware encoder and current compatible drivers.
- For a VPS, verify the actual plan. Confirm Windows support, sustained encoding capacity, upload performance, traffic terms and total cost with the provider before installing OBS or paying for a longer term.
- Configure YouTube ingest. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for live ingest. Use the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s live-stream setup; keep the stream key private. In OBS, select the YouTube/RTMPS service if available, or enter the supplied server details as directed by YouTube.
- Set OBS output deliberately. Use CBR for live encoder bitrate, as YouTube recommends. Start with YouTube’s bitrate guidance for your chosen resolution and frame rate, and configure the encoder and keyframe interval according to YouTube’s current instructions for the selected ingest setup.
- Run a realistic test stream. Test the intended scene, encoder, resolution and frame rate, and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators. On a PC, test the actual home connection; on a VPS, test the actual server and provider network. Do not infer stability from basic system requirements or advertised bandwidth alone.
- Monitor during operation. Keep an eye on OBS and YouTube stream health, and have a way to reconnect or restart the stream if the selected setup stops sending video.
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Keeping a stream technically online does not establish that its content is permitted or that a channel will qualify for monetization. Before running a 24/7 stream, make sure you have the rights to the video, music and other material you broadcast, and review YouTube’s current rules for copyright, live streaming and monetization. Repeating prerecorded material does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization; assess the channel and content against YouTube’s current policies.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain an OBS computer or Windows VPS, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs from the cloud.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with the upload streamed as made and no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. The service is YouTube-only; it does not stream from a camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
Quick Recap
Common problems and what to check
- OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube stream health is poor: Check the actual upload path and stability at the chosen bitrate. Reduce the bitrate or stream quality if the connection cannot sustain it, then test again.
- Encoding overload or choppy output: The scene, resolution or frame rate may exceed the system’s sustained capacity. Test a less demanding configuration or a supported hardware encoder with compatible drivers.
- A VPS looks powerful on paper but struggles with encoding: Confirm the specific plan’s sustained CPU or hardware encoder access rather than assuming virtual CPU capacity maps to a dedicated GPU encoder.
- The stream cannot connect: Check the YouTube server address, stream key, RTMPS configuration and whether the network permits access to the ingest endpoint. Regenerate a compromised key in YouTube Studio.
- A stream stops after running unattended: Determine whether OBS, the machine/server, power or network failed. The setup requires an appropriate monitoring and restart plan; no uninterrupted-service guarantee is established for either DIY option.
