1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you use Windows 11, try its built-in Voice Access before installing an alternative: it supports voice commands and text authoring, and Microsoft says it works without an internet connection. For more customization, Talon is a scriptable option; Dragon is another solution Microsoft documents as usable alongside Voice Access. Windows Speech Recognition is mainly relevant to older Windows installations because Voice Access replaced it on Windows 11 22H2 and later beginning in September 2024.
Choose based on what you need to control
First decide whether you need to navigate the whole PC by voice, dictate text, or both. Voice Access provides commands and text authoring; Microsoft describes Voice Typing as a separate dictation feature that starts in a text box. A dictation tool alone may not cover tasks such as opening apps, navigating menus, or controlling the pointer.
Before choosing, check the Windows version and language on the intended PC, whether offline operation matters, and how much setup and customization you are willing to manage. The options below differ in those respects; there is no comparative accuracy test here to establish that one recognizes speech better than another.
Windows voice-control options compared
| Option | Best fit | Control and dictation | Setup and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voice Access | Windows 11 users who want built-in hands-free control | Commands and text authoring; supports combined, commands-only, and dictation-only modes | Windows 11 version 22H2 or later; Microsoft says it works without an internet connection. Language availability varies. |
| Windows Speech Recognition (WSR) | Users on older Windows versions | Microsoft documents Windows and app commands, keyboard and dictation commands, and mouse-grid operations | Not the current Windows 11 choice: Microsoft says Voice Access replaced it on Windows 11 22H2 and later beginning in September 2024. |
| Dragon | Users considering a separate voice-control solution or running it alongside Voice Access | Not established in the Microsoft source cited here as a feature-by-feature comparison | Microsoft documents distinct wake words for switching between Dragon and Voice Access. Current editions, pricing, and detailed capabilities are not established here. |
| Talon | Users who want scriptable hands-free desktop interaction | Its documentation describes desktop, programming, command-line, and gaming use | Supports Windows 8 or newer according to its documentation. Users must add scripts for voice commands; eye-tracking mouse control has tracker requirements. |
Voice Access: the first option to try on Windows 11
Microsoft lists Voice Access for Windows 11 version 22H2 and later. It supports opening and switching apps, web browsing, email, and text authoring. Its default mode combines commands and text authoring; you can also choose commands-only or dictation-only mode. See Microsoft’s Voice Access setup guide for current setup instructions.

Setup includes choosing or adding a microphone and selecting a language. Microsoft’s FAQ currently lists English, Spanish, French, and German for Voice Access; check the live setup information for your language and Windows version, since WSR and Voice Typing have different language availability.
Voice Access can be configured to start before or after sign-in. Microsoft says sign-in use from the lock-screen accessibility flyout begins with Windows 11 version 23H2. Because setup paths and availability can depend on the PC’s version, verify them on the device you intend to use. The Voice Access FAQ covers the current sign-in details.

When the alternatives make sense
Windows Speech Recognition for older Windows versions
WSR remains relevant on older Windows installations. Microsoft’s WSR command reference includes dictation, commands for Windows and applications, keyboard commands, and mouse-grid operations. Microsoft lists WSR language options including English (United States, United Kingdom, Canada, India, and Australia), French, German, Japanese, Mandarin (Simplified and Traditional Chinese), and Spanish. Availability may depend on Windows version and feature; do not assume a language listed for WSR is also available in Voice Access.
Dragon for a separate solution or a companion
Microsoft’s Voice Access FAQ explicitly discusses running Dragon and Voice Access together. It describes distinct wake words so one solution can be activated without accidentally waking the other. That establishes a documented switching path, not a full comparison of Dragon’s current editions, features, or costs. Check the vendor’s current product information before choosing an edition.

Talon for scriptable control
Talon’s official documentation describes hands-free desktop interaction, programming, real-time gaming, and command-line work. It supports Windows 8 or newer, offers a free speech-recognition engine, is compatible with Dragon, and can be extended with Python scripts and modular voice or eye-tracking control.
Talon is not a ready-made, zero-configuration replacement: its documentation says users must add scripts before it recognizes commands, and notes that the release is very new and not fully documented. Its eye-tracking mouse-control path depends on a Tobii 4C, Tobii 5, or equivalent tracker; check current compatibility and availability if you need that input method.

Offline operation and privacy are separate questions
Microsoft describes Voice Access as usable without an internet connection. Separately, its Windows speech privacy documentation distinguishes device-based speech recognition, which processes voice locally and sends no voice data to Microsoft, from online speech recognition, which uses cloud services. These statements do not establish the privacy behavior of every Windows speech feature or third-party product. Check the current privacy documentation for the specific feature or software you plan to use.
If you are still using Windows 10, distinguish whether a speech feature runs from whether the operating system remains supported: Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.

Microphone and alternative-input hardware
Voice Access setup lets you select or add a microphone, so a microphone is an enabling accessory if your PC does not already have one suitable for your needs. The sources cited here do not compare microphone types, headsets, room acoustics, noise handling, or specific models; choose hardware based on your setup rather than assuming one type will improve recognition.
For Talon’s eye-tracking mouse-control path, consult its documentation for the stated Tobii 4C, Tobii 5, or equivalent tracker dependency, then confirm that a compatible device is currently available.
