It is no longer a way to acquire apps for an organization or distribute new line-of-business apps. Microsoft’s current options include deploying internal apps through Intune or Configuration Manager, and distributing MSIX packages with App Installer or directly. The right route depends on how your devices are managed, the app’s package and signing, and how you want to control deployment and updates.
What was Windows Store for Business?
Microsoft Store for Business was an enterprise service for finding and acquiring Windows apps for an organization. Its features included associating apps with an enterprise, providing a private store, and supporting offline Store licensing. Those capabilities belonged to the retired service; current Store catalog deployment does not restore every private-store or offline-licensing feature.

Microsoft Lifecycle lists November 2, 2015 as the service start date. Microsoft’s retirement announcement, originally published July 21, 2021 and last updated January 9, 2023, preceded the shutdown.
When did Microsoft Store for Business retire?
Microsoft Learn’s current enterprise distribution guidance says Microsoft Store for Business and Microsoft Store for Education retired on March 31, 2023. Microsoft Lifecycle lists April 1, 2023 as the retirement date. The official pages therefore differ by one day; both indicate that the service has ended.

What replaced Microsoft Store for Business?
There is no single replacement that reproduces every old feature. Microsoft points organizations to several deployment routes, selected according to device management, app type, package format, and desired update controls.
| Route | Useful for | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Intune | Managed devices; internal apps added as line-of-business apps, or eligible public Store apps added from the Intune Store catalog. | Company Portal can act as a private app repository for organizations using Intune. The catalog is not a restoration of all retired private-store or offline-license capabilities. |
| Microsoft Configuration Manager | Distributing line-of-business apps to devices managed with Configuration Manager. | This is a current deployment route distinct from the old Store for Business integration, which was deprecated starting in November 2021. |
| App Installer or web distribution | Deploying MSIX packages, including an installation experience hosted on the web. | Choose an approach that fits the package and the organization’s deployment and update controls. |
| Direct package distribution | Providing a signed app package directly to users or devices. | For an MSIX installed outside Microsoft Store, the target device must trust the package’s signing certificate. |
How should an organization choose a deployment route?
- Start with device management. If the devices are managed in Intune or Configuration Manager, use the deployment options supported by that platform. Intune can handle internal line-of-business apps as well as eligible public Store catalog apps.
- Identify the app source. An internal company app and a public Store app are different cases. Intune’s Store catalog applies to eligible public apps; internal apps can be added directly as line-of-business apps.
- Check packaging and trust. For MSIX distribution outside Microsoft Store, confirm that each target device trusts the package-signing certificate before deployment.
- Decide how deployment and updates should work. Compare the controls available through your management platform with App Installer, web-hosted installation, or direct package distribution. Microsoft documents these as options, not as one universally best choice.
Does blocking Microsoft Store block Intune app deployment?
Store access policies and app deployment are separate questions. Microsoft’s Windows device guidance on configuring access to the Microsoft Store app addresses access to the Store interface; Microsoft’s enterprise app guidance separately documents adding eligible public Store apps through Intune. Do not assume that a policy blocking the Store UI, by itself, determines whether Intune can deploy a Store-sourced app; verify the policy and deployment behavior for the organization’s Windows configuration.

What happened to Configuration Manager’s Store integration?
The former Configuration Manager integration with Microsoft Store for Business is not the same as using Configuration Manager to distribute line-of-business apps. Microsoft marked the Store integration feature deprecated starting in November 2021. Its historical documentation distinguishes online licensing, which connected users or devices to the Store, from offline licensing, which enabled cached app and license deployment. Those descriptions explain the old workflow; they are not current setup instructions for the retired integration.
