Who leaked the Windows source code? Contemporaneous reporting in February 2004 attributed a leaked Windows 2000 source-code set to Mainsoft, a Microsoft licensee with access through the Windows Interface Source Environment (WISE). That attribution came from a TechSpot report relaying BetaNews; it was not presented as a final forensic or court finding. Microsoft separately confirmed that portions of Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 had appeared online and said an investigation was under way.

What Windows source code was leaked in 2004?

On February 12, 2004, Microsoft said portions of the source code for Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 had been posted illegally on the internet. The company said it was investigating with law-enforcement authorities.

The next day, TechSpot reported information from BetaNews that identified the Windows 2000 files with Mainsoft. The report described the material as a subset of Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 source, not the complete Windows codebase and not a package that could be compiled into a usable Windows installation.

The reported size and version

BetaNews, as reported by TechSpot, gave the set’s size as 30,915 files. The files were described as dated July 25, 2000 and representing Windows 2000 Service Pack 1. That number applies to the reported Windows 2000 set; it is not a count for all Windows source code and should not be extended to the separately mentioned Windows NT 4.0 material.

What the files reportedly contained

The report said the files included references to MainWin, Mainsoft’s product for creating native Unix versions of Windows applications. It characterized the leaked material as an incomplete subset that did not produce a runnable form of Windows.

Why Mainsoft was connected to the leak

TechSpot’s February 13 article, citing BetaNews, said Mainsoft had licensed access to Windows source code for MainWin. In March 2000, Mainsoft reportedly extended its WISE agreement with Microsoft to include Windows 2000 source access.

The same account described Mainsoft as one of two partners with WISE access before Microsoft’s Shared Source Initiative began in 2001. WISE was reported as a way for developers to use Windows APIs while building applications intended to run on Unix systems, including Linux. Those historical licensing details explain why Mainsoft appeared in the reporting; they do not, by themselves, prove how the files left authorized systems or identify an individual responsible.

What Microsoft said on February 12, 2004

Microsoft’s statement, reproduced in the TechSpot report, provided a narrower confirmed account than the Mainsoft attribution. It said portions of Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 source had been posted online and that the company was investigating with law-enforcement authorities.

Timeline of the reported incident

Date What was reported
March 2000 Mainsoft reportedly extended its WISE agreement with Microsoft to obtain Windows 2000 source access.
February 12, 2004 Microsoft said portions of Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 source were online, announced an investigation with law enforcement, and said a Microsoft-network breach did not appear to be the cause at that point.
February 13, 2004 TechSpot published a report relaying BetaNews’ attribution of the Windows 2000 files to Mainsoft and describing the 30,915-file Windows 2000 SP1 subset.

Confirmed facts versus reported attribution

Question What the contemporaneous material supports
Were Windows files posted online? Microsoft confirmed that portions of Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 source code had been posted illegally.
Was Mainsoft named? Yes. TechSpot, relaying BetaNews, attributed the Windows 2000 set to Mainsoft’s licensed development access.
How large was the Windows 2000 set? The report cited 30,915 files, described as Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 material.
Was all Windows source exposed? No. The report described a subset, and Microsoft’s statement referred to portions of two Windows versions.
Could it install or compile into Windows? The report said the subset did not compile into a usable form of Windows.
Was a specific person proved responsible? Not in the material available here. No final investigative finding, escape mechanism, or court disposition is established.

What remains unknown

  • The precise way the files escaped authorized access.
  • Whether law-enforcement investigators reached a final public conclusion.
  • Whether any named individual was charged, convicted, or otherwise found responsible.
  • The complete scope of the Windows NT 4.0 material mentioned by Microsoft.

Accordingly, the most accurate formulation is that contemporaneous reporting traced the reported Windows 2000 leak to Mainsoft’s licensed source access. It is not accurate to present that wording as a definitive forensic conclusion, to say that Microsoft’s corporate network was confirmed breached, or to imply that a complete, bootable Windows system was released.
