It is useful for troubleshooting, but the recipient must approve both the connection and any request for control.
The current version is distributed through the Microsoft Store, so it may need to be installed even if an older Quick Assist shortcut was already present. These FAQs cover installation, connection codes, permissions, security, WebView2 errors, Store problems, and support for older Windows versions.
What is Windows Quick Assist?
Quick Assist is Microsoft’s remote-help app for Windows 10 and Windows 11. A helper generates a temporary six-digit code, and the person receiving help enters that code in Quick Assist. After the recipient approves the connection, the helper can see the screen and may request control of the PC.
The helper and recipient do not automatically get the same permissions. Screen sharing starts only after the recipient selects Allow, and full control requires a separate approval.

Does Windows Quick Assist need to be installed?
Yes. Microsoft’s current Quick Assist experience is a Microsoft Store app. It is not accurate to assume that Quick Assist is permanently built into every current Windows installation.
- Open Start > All apps > Microsoft Store.
- Search for Quick Assist.
- Select the app, then select Get or Install.
- When installation finishes, select Open.
The Store version has a new icon. If the old shortcut remains, opening the new app should remove shortcuts to the older version. If it does not, you can delete the old shortcut manually.
How do I open Quick Assist?
Use any of these methods:
- Select Start, type Quick Assist, and select it from the search results.
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Q.
- Open Microsoft’s Quick Assist support page and select Open Quick Assist.
If Windows cannot find the app, install it from the Microsoft Store first.
How does the helper connect to someone’s PC?
- Open Quick Assist.
- Select Help someone.
- Quick Assist generates a six-digit code.
- Give that code to the person receiving help.
- Wait while they enter the code, select Submit, and allow the connection.
- Use the laser pointer, annotation, or chat tools if you only need to explain what the recipient should do.
- To operate the PC, select Request control and wait for the recipient to approve it.
Select Leave when the session is finished.
How does the recipient accept a Quick Assist session?
- Open Quick Assist.
- Enter the helper’s code in the Code from assistant box.
- Select Submit.
- Review the request and select Allow to begin sharing the screen.
- If the helper requests full control, select Allow only if you want them to operate the PC.
To revoke full control during the session, select Cancel control. Select Leave to end the connection entirely.

Can the helper control the PC without permission?
No. The helper can see the recipient’s screen only after the recipient allows the connection. Full control is a separate permission: the helper must select Request control, and the recipient must select Allow.
Do not leave an approved session unattended. The helper may be able to open files, change settings, install software, or enter commands while control is enabled.

Is Windows Quick Assist safe?
Quick Assist itself is a legitimate Microsoft remote-support tool, but anyone who obtains an active code may attempt to connect. Use it only with a person or support agent you trust.
Microsoft gives a specific warning about fake support calls. Allow a connection claiming to be from Microsoft only when you initiated the interaction by contacting Microsoft Support directly. An unsolicited phone call, pop-up, email, or message claiming to be Microsoft Support is not authenticated merely because it uses Quick Assist.

Before allowing control:
- Confirm who the helper is and why they need access.
- Close confidential documents, password managers, banking pages, and private messages.
- Watch the screen while control is enabled.
- Select Cancel control if the helper no longer needs to operate the PC.
- Select Leave as soon as the task is complete.
Can I use Quick Assist from a browser?
Microsoft provides a Quick Assist web app for assistance from verified Microsoft Support agents. Microsoft does not document that web app as a general browser replacement for Windows Quick Assist between friends or family members.
For ordinary Windows-to-Windows help, use the Microsoft Store Quick Assist app.
Does Quick Assist work on Mac?
Quick Assist for macOS is limited to interactions with Microsoft Support. Microsoft says it is not available for general use outside Microsoft Support interactions. Do not assume that a friend can use a Mac browser or Mac app to provide an ordinary Mac-to-Windows Quick Assist session.
What is Microsoft Edge WebView2, and why does Quick Assist need it?
Quick Assist requires Microsoft Edge WebView2. WebView2 is normally already present on Windows 11 or on a computer with Microsoft Edge installed. If it is missing, Quick Assist attempts to install it when the app first opens.

The installation may take longer than expected. Wait for it to finish rather than immediately closing the app. If automatic installation fails, install Microsoft Edge WebView2 from Microsoft’s website, then reopen Quick Assist.
If WebView2 is installed but Quick Assist still fails, Microsoft’s first recommended check is to make sure Microsoft Edge is properly installed and up to date. Restart Quick Assist after updating Edge.
What do Quick Assist WebView2 errors 1001, 1002, 1003, and 1004 mean?

How do I fix Quick Assist if Microsoft Store will not install it?
Try the following sequence:
- Install the latest Windows updates.
- Check that Windows has the correct time, date, time zone, and location settings.
- Reset the Microsoft Store cache. Press Windows + R, enter
wsreset.exe, and select OK. - Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close. Microsoft says this normally takes about ten seconds, after which Microsoft Store opens automatically.
- Search for Quick Assist and try the installation again.
If the PC belongs to a company or school, an administrator may have blocked Microsoft Store downloads. That policy must be changed by the organization’s IT team.
What should I do if Microsoft Store is missing?
First, search for Microsoft Store from Start. It may only have been unpinned from the Start menu or taskbar.

If it does not appear, Microsoft lists several possible causes:
- You are signed in with a local account instead of a Microsoft account.
- A work or school administrator disabled Microsoft Store.
- The PC is managed by an organization that restricts Store apps.
On a managed computer, do not try to bypass the restriction; ask the administrator whether Quick Assist can be approved.

Does the old Windows Store Apps troubleshooter fix Quick Assist?
Not reliably. Older guides may tell you to run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter, but Microsoft is retiring the legacy Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool and its inbox troubleshooters. The old tool should not be treated as the universal current fix.
For current Windows troubleshooting, check Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and select an applicable troubleshooter if one is available.
Why does Quick Assist fail on some older Windows versions?
Microsoft warns that the Store version may fail to install on certain older releases:
- Windows 10 LTSC 2019, version 1809
- Windows 10 version 20H2
- Windows 10 version 21H1
- Windows 10 version 21H2
- Windows 11 version 21H1
Install the latest Windows updates first. Microsoft says updates may restore the original Quick Assist version on these systems.
Microsoft also lists Windows 10 versions below 15063 as requiring an update or use of the Microsoft Store website. In practice, updating the operating system is the better long-term solution because unsupported or outdated Windows releases can have additional Store and security problems.

What should I do if the Quick Assist code does not work?
- Check that the helper generated a current six-digit code.
- Enter the code exactly in the recipient’s Code from assistant box.
- Generate a new code if the original has expired or was mistyped.
- Confirm that both people are using the current Quick Assist app rather than an obsolete shortcut.
- Check the internet connection and retry after restarting Quick Assist.
Never publish a Quick Assist code in a public forum or send it to someone whose identity you have not verified.
FAQ
Can Quick Assist transfer files?
Quick Assist is intended for screen sharing, remote control, chat, laser-pointer guidance, and annotation. Do not treat it as a file-transfer service. Use a separate, trusted method to exchange files.
Can I control the other PC immediately after entering the code?
No. Entering the code only starts the connection request. The recipient must select Allow to share the screen, and must separately approve a Request control request.
Can the recipient stop the helper?
Yes. The recipient can select Cancel control to revoke full control, or select Leave to end the Quick Assist session.
Is a six-digit Quick Assist code a password?
It is a temporary connection code, not a permanent password. Treat it as sensitive while it is active and give it only to the trusted helper you expect to connect.
Why does Quick Assist open slowly the first time?
Quick Assist may be installing Microsoft Edge WebView2. Microsoft says to wait for that installation to finish. If it fails, install WebView2 manually and reopen Quick Assist.
Can a company block Quick Assist?
Yes. An organization can prevent Microsoft Store installation or restrict related components through policy. Contact the work or school administrator rather than attempting to bypass those controls.

For current Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs, install Quick Assist from Microsoft Store, launch it with Start or Windows + Ctrl + Q, and use a freshly generated six-digit code. The recipient controls access: they approve screen sharing, separately approve full control, can cancel control at any time, and can end the session with Leave. Treat unsolicited Quick Assist requests as a support scam, and resolve installation failures by checking Windows updates, Microsoft Store, WebView2, and organizational policies.
