Windows on Arm now has more than 7,000 verified apps and games in Microsoft’s compatibility catalog. That figure includes software that runs through emulation as well as native Arm64 apps; it does not mean all 7,000 have Arm-native versions. For many everyday Windows applications, the combination of native releases and Microsoft’s Prism emulation makes an Arm PC more practical than before, but games, drivers, and specialized peripherals still need checking individually.
What the 7,000-app milestone means
Microsoft’s August 25, 2026 Windows Developer Blog update says the Works on Windows on Arm catalog lists more than 7,000 verified apps and games. Microsoft describes the catalog as based on compatibility data. It is a count of verified working software, not a count of applications rebuilt as native Arm64 binaries.
Windows on Arm supports two broad routes for running software. Native Arm64 apps are built for Arm processors. Many existing x86 and x64 Windows applications can instead run under Prism, Microsoft’s emulation engine. The result is a wider practical selection than the native-app count alone suggests, though an app that launches under emulation may not behave or perform exactly like a native build.
How apps run on Windows on Arm
Native Arm64 applications
A native Arm64 version is designed for the processor architecture in an Arm PC. When an app you depend on offers one, it avoids the translation involved in emulation. Check the developer’s download or system-requirements page for the specific architecture and version you need.

x86 and x64 apps through Prism
On Snapdragon X-series Copilot+ PCs, Prism can emulate many x86 and x64 applications that do not yet have native Arm versions. Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ says Prism improves performance for everyday applications. Emulation is not a universal fix: software that depends on low-level system access, specialized security components, or a particular driver may need a native Arm-compatible component or an update from its vendor.
Drivers and connected devices
Applications and drivers are different compatibility questions. A desktop app may run while a printer, audio interface, security product, or other peripheral does not work fully because its driver or kernel-level component lacks Arm support. Before buying, check the device maker’s support information for Windows 11 on Arm and the exact model or software version you plan to use.

Gaming support has improved, but check individual titles
Microsoft said in its January 21, 2026 Windows Experience Blog post that the Xbox app was available on all Arm-based Windows 11 PCs and that more than 85% of the Game Pass catalog was compatible with these PCs at that time. That is Microsoft’s reported compatibility figure for the catalog, not a guarantee that every game runs well on every Arm laptop.
Two changes help explain the improvement. Prism gained support for AVX and AVX2 instructions used by modern games, and support for Epic Easy Anti-Cheat enabled titles including Fortnite and Gears of War: Reloaded. Anti-cheat compatibility is particularly important: a game can be otherwise technically capable of running yet remain unavailable if its anti-cheat system does not support the platform.

For a game that is not supported locally, Microsoft points to Xbox Cloud Gaming as an alternative. Cloud play avoids relying on the laptop to run the game itself, but it depends on an acceptable internet connection and the game being available through the service.
Should you buy a Windows on Arm laptop?
A Windows on Arm laptop can be a sensible choice if your required apps work well on the specific device and your priority is a modern Windows experience on Arm hardware. The growing verified catalog is encouraging, but a platform-wide count cannot confirm compatibility for your particular workflow. Treat these checks as a buying checklist:
Rank #4
- EFFORTLESS EVERYDAY PERFORMANCE: Powered by Intel Celeron N4020 processor and Windows 11 Home system, delivering reliable, low-power efficiency for daily tasks like document editing, email, online classes, and web browsing
- 15.6-INCH FULL HD DISPLAY: Enjoy immersive visuals on the 15.6" FHD (1920x1080) anti-glare screen with micro-edge bezels. Delivers clear details and comfortable viewing for long study sessions, working on spreadsheets, and video playback
- RESPONSIVE MULTITASKING & STORAGE: Built with 4GB LPDDR4 RAM and 128GB eMMC storage for smooth daily essential use. Expand your storage by up to 1TB via the integrated TF card slot to easily store movies, photos, and working files

- LIGHTWEIGHT & SILENT OPERATION: Slim and portable for effortless travel or commuting. Features a 1MP HD webcam for remote meetings, 38Wh battery with 45W Type-C fast charging, and a fanless silent design for peaceful work environments.
- List essential applications. Confirm whether each has a native Arm64 build or is verified to work through emulation, and check any required plug-ins or add-ons.
- Check games and anti-cheat. Look up the exact titles you play rather than relying on the overall Game Pass percentage.
- Verify drivers and peripherals. Confirm support for printers, docks, audio equipment, security software, and other hardware you cannot replace or do without.
- Match the workload to the device. Consider whether the apps you need can tolerate emulation and whether your performance and battery-life priorities fit the particular laptop. The catalog count alone does not establish performance for a specific model or workload.
- Decide whether cloud access is enough. Cloud gaming can cover some unsupported titles, but it is not a substitute for local play when you need offline access or cannot rely on network conditions.
Microsoft says Surface, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and MSI will offer Arm devices in fall 2026, alongside Qualcomm Snapdragon X systems and NVIDIA RTX Spark-based hardware. Availability, configurations, and specifications depend on the manufacturer and market, so check the precise model rather than assuming every announced system has the same capabilities.

Microsoft also offers App Assure, including an Arm Advisory Service, to help developers address compatibility problems. These resources are aimed at teams working through a port or troubleshooting an app, rather than being a substitute for checking end-user requirements. Fender Musical Instruments Corp. VP of Software Engineering Matthias Juwan said porting Fender Studio’s application ecosystem was more straightforward than expected, citing the maturity of available tools, compatibility resources, and engineering guidance.
