Microsoft reports that the Windows infostealer ChocoShell can collect saved passwords, browser cookies, Microsoft 365 sign-in tokens and Wi-Fi credentials from compromised PCs. Its July 31, 2026 report does not say ChocoShell steals payment-card data, so that claim should not be attributed to this malware. The safest response to an unexpected captive-portal update prompt is not to run its command or download; use trusted update channels and treat guest Wi-Fi as untrusted.
What ChocoShell can steal—and what Microsoft does not report
Microsoft Threat Intelligence describes ChocoShell as a PowerShell infostealer that runs in memory. Its reported targets include:
- Saved data from Chromium-based browsers, including passwords and browser session cookies.
- Cookies from Firefox-family browsers.
- Microsoft 365 and Azure Active Directory access and refresh tokens, along with Web Account Manager tokens used for sign-in.
- Saved Wi-Fi credentials.
Cookies and sign-in tokens can represent an active authenticated session, not just a password stored in a browser. That is why an exposed account may need more than a password change: the relevant service’s official controls should also be used to review sign-ins and revoke sessions or tokens where available.
Microsoft’s named ChocoShell collection list does not include payment-card data. The report therefore does not substantiate the headline’s card-theft claim for this malware; it should not be inferred from capabilities of other infostealers.

CornFlake provides persistence
Microsoft describes CornFlake as a Go-based Windows remote-access trojan and persistent implant. Its reported functions include system enumeration, file collection, keylogging, screenshots, microphone and camera capture, USB monitoring, remote shell access and browser credential theft. CornFlake can also serve as a platform for companion or later-stage tools.
ChocoShell collects credentials and sessions
Within this toolchain, ChocoShell is the in-memory PowerShell stealer used to collect credentials and session material. The two names refer to different components, not interchangeable names for one program.

How the campaign reaches users
Microsoft reports that Storm-2945 manipulated DNS and HTTP traffic on networks using captive portals, redirecting users through infrastructure controlled by the attackers. Users were shown fake browser or operating-system update prompts, including ClickFix-style instructions that tried to persuade them to execute malware themselves. Microsoft reported widespread compromise of Wi-Fi networks at hospitality-related organizations and other networks using captive-portal equipment in several countries; the initial compromise method for those networks was still under investigation in the report.
Microsoft Threat Intelligence assesses Storm-2945 as an operational sub-cluster of Midnight Blizzard, based on technical and operational overlaps. Microsoft attributes Midnight Blizzard to Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service. These are Microsoft’s assessments and attributions, not independently established identities in this article. The report gives no population-level infection count for ChocoShell, so activity across multiple countries should not be read as a measure of how many people or PCs were infected.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
How to stay safer on hotel, airport and conference Wi-Fi
Microsoft’s campaign guidance says: “When traveling, users should treat hotel, conference, airport, and other guest wireless networks as untrustworthy.” Practical steps follow from that advice and the reported delivery method:
- Do not run commands supplied by a web page. A captive portal asking you to paste text into PowerShell, Command Prompt or another system tool is a serious warning sign.
- Do not install an unexpected update offered by a portal. Close the page and check for updates through Windows Update or the software maker’s own trusted update mechanism.
- Use private connectivity when practical. Microsoft recommends private connectivity while traveling where it is feasible; it reduces reliance on guest Wi-Fi, but does not replace keeping the PC and accounts secure.
- Strengthen sign-in protection. Microsoft recommends passkeys and multifactor authentication (MFA). In organizational environments, Microsoft also advises limiting device-code flow where possible.
- Use a FIDO2 security key only as an authentication measure. It can support phishing-resistant sign-in when the service supports it, but it does not clean an infected PC or guarantee an account cannot be compromised.
What to do if you ran a suspicious prompt
Microsoft’s report explains ChocoShell’s capabilities but does not provide a consumer cleanup checklist. If you suspect you executed a command from a captive portal, treat the PC and accounts as potentially exposed:

- Disconnect the affected PC from the network while you arrange trusted security assistance. Avoid using that PC to change passwords or access sensitive accounts until it has been checked.
- From a separate, trusted device, secure important accounts. Use each service’s official recovery and security pages to change exposed passwords, review recent sign-ins, and revoke active sessions or tokens where those controls are available. Prioritize work, email and Microsoft accounts that may enable access to other services.
- Contact your organization’s IT or security team if the PC or account is work-managed, or if a work account may have been used on the device. They can investigate the endpoint and apply organization-specific identity controls.
- Have the Windows PC checked and restored through trusted support. Password changes do not remove malware from a device. Use a trusted security provider or your organization’s response process to assess and clean or rebuild the PC before returning it to sensitive use.
