Check whether your exact PC is eligible for Windows 11 first. If it is, Windows 11 is the supported path. Windows 10 still runs, but its standard support ended on October 14, 2025. Eligible personal-use PCs can receive limited Windows 10 security updates through October 13, 2026, via Microsoft’s consumer Extended Security Updates program. If your computer cannot run Windows 11 and you need supported Windows beyond that bridge, plan for a replacement.
How to decide for your specific PC
- Check eligibility. Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check app, or review the eligibility result in Windows Update.
- If eligible, consider upgrading. Windows Update is the upgrade route for eligible Windows 10 PCs running version 2004 or later. Check that the apps, accessories, and work tasks you rely on are compatible.
- If ineligible, assess the transition. If the PC is a personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 device, check whether consumer ESU enrollment is available to you. It provides a limited period of security updates, not ongoing full support.
- Plan for the period after ESU. If you need an ongoing supported Windows computer and this PC cannot meet Windows 11 requirements, compare replacement with any model-specific repair or upgrade options. The right choice depends on the computer, its condition, your workload, and local costs.
What Windows 11 eligibility requires
Microsoft’s minimum requirements include more than memory and storage. A PC needs a compatible 64-bit processor on Microsoft’s supported list, running at least 1 GHz with two or more cores; at least 4 GB of RAM; and at least 64 GB of storage. It also needs UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a qualifying HD display larger than 9 inches diagonally. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements.
These are minimum specifications, not a guarantee that Windows 11 will perform well for your particular workload. Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro for personal use also require an internet connection and Microsoft account during initial setup.
Why a failed check may not be a simple fix
A PC can have enough RAM and storage yet still fail because of its processor, firmware, TPM, or another requirement. Do not assume that buying a generic TPM module or memory stick will make an ineligible computer compatible. Upgrade options depend on the PC’s design, and the processor must be supported. Check with the computer’s manufacturer or a hardware expert before buying parts.

What Windows 10 support ending means
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs continue to function, but without applicable coverage they no longer receive regular operating-system security updates, quality fixes, feature updates, or technical assistance. Microsoft warns that antivirus software alone does not replace operating-system security updates. See Microsoft’s Windows end-of-support guidance.
That distinction matters: a PC may still start and run its software, but continued operation does not mean it is receiving the regular security fixes provided during support.

What consumer Windows 10 ESU does—and does not—provide
Microsoft’s consumer Extended Security Updates program is a limited bridge for eligible personal-use PCs running Windows 10 version 22H2 in most markets. Organization-managed devices and devices enrolled in enterprise licensing programs are excluded from this consumer offer. Eligible enrolled PCs receive critical and important security updates through October 13, 2026, regardless of when enrollment occurs.
Microsoft lists enrollment routes that include syncing PC settings at no additional cost, using Microsoft Rewards points, or paying a one-time USD $30 plus applicable tax. Availability, terms, and timing may vary by region, so check the current enrollment screen and local offer. ESU covers security updates for its limited term; it does not restore general technical assistance or new feature updates. Details are in Microsoft’s Windows support information.

Will Windows 11 run faster on an older PC?
There is no universal answer established for every older computer. Microsoft’s requirements and lifecycle guidance do not provide a controlled performance comparison across older PC models. A machine meeting Windows 11’s minimum requirements is not automatically a good fit for every app or workload, and Windows 10’s continued operation does not establish that it is the better-performing choice.
For a useful model-specific decision, check the exact make and model, processor, firmware settings, and the programs and peripherals you need. Confirm compatibility with their manufacturers where necessary. The official guidance cannot determine whether a particular repair or component upgrade is worthwhile; that depends on the device and its cost in your market.

Decision at a glance
| Your situation | Practical next step |
|---|---|
| The PC passes Microsoft’s Windows 11 eligibility check | Use Windows Update to assess the upgrade. For that upgrade route, the Windows 10 device must be running version 2004 or later. |
| The PC fails the check, but it is personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 and you need a short transition | Check local eligibility for consumer ESU and use it as a temporary security-update bridge through October 13, 2026. |
| The PC fails the check and you need supported Windows beyond the ESU period | Consider replacing the PC, or get model-specific advice about whether a viable hardware change is possible. |
| You are unsure whether an upgrade is worthwhile for your apps or equipment | Verify compatibility for the exact PC, software, and peripherals before changing operating systems. |
Bottom line
Let the compatibility check and support timeline guide the choice, not the PC’s age alone. An eligible older PC can move to Windows 11; an ineligible Windows 10 PC has only a limited consumer ESU bridge if it qualifies. If you require supported Windows after that period, a PC that cannot meet Windows 11 requirements calls for a replacement plan.
