For most people whose PC can run it, Windows 11 is the better choice in October 2026: Windows 10’s regular support has ended, while a qualifying Windows 10 PC can upgrade to Windows 11 for free. Windows 10 PCs still work, but owners who cannot upgrade should plan a supported path—often replacing the PC, or using Microsoft’s limited Extended Security Updates (ESU) program as a temporary bridge.

Windows 11 vs. Windows 10 at a glance

Decision point Windows 11 Windows 10
Support in October 2026 Supported releases receive updates according to edition and version. Microsoft lists Windows 11 version 26H2 as available September 29, 2026, with updates for Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations through October 10, 2028. Microsoft’s supported versions table gives other release dates. Windows 10 Home and Pro general-channel version 22H2 reached end of support October 14, 2025. Enrolled eligible devices may receive limited security updates through ESU, not ordinary feature updates or general support. Microsoft’s end-of-support guidance
Can you upgrade? Only if the PC meets Windows 11’s requirements, including an approved processor, TPM 2.0, and Secure Boot-capable UEFI firmware. Existing Windows 10 installations continue to run, but being able to run Windows 10 does not mean the PC qualifies for Windows 11.
Upgrade cost Free from Windows 10 for a qualifying device, according to Microsoft. ESU is a limited support option for eligible devices; check Microsoft’s current enrollment terms.
Interface and features Adds or expands features such as File Explorer tabs, passkeys with Windows Hello, Live Captions, and newer gaming and window-management features. Benefit and availability vary by hardware and use. Has a familiar interface and some related capabilities, but does not receive new general-channel feature updates after end of support.

Why Windows 11 is the better default now

Windows 10’s ordinary support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides its regular free Windows Update software updates, security fixes, or technical assistance for Windows 10 Home and Pro general-channel installations. That support change—not a claim that Windows 11 is automatically faster—is the main reason to prefer Windows 11 for a PC that will remain in everyday use.

Microsoft lists Windows 11 version 26H2 as available September 29, 2026. Its Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations editions are listed for updates through October 10, 2028. Support dates differ by Windows 11 version and edition, so a Windows 11 installation is not supported indefinitely just because it is Windows 11. Check the supported versions of Windows client table for the release installed on your PC.

Windows 10 is not immediately unusable: Microsoft says PCs continue to function after support ends. The practical difference is that, without ESU, the normal stream of updates and technical assistance is gone. Microsoft’s consumer Windows 10 ESU program is a limited security-update bridge for eligible enrolled devices, not a way to restore full Windows 10 support.

Check whether your PC can run Windows 11

Microsoft’s minimum requirements include all of the following. Meeting the minimum is an eligibility threshold, not a promise that demanding apps or every optional feature will run well.

  • A 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores that appears on Microsoft’s supported processor list.
  • At least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
  • UEFI firmware capable of Secure Boot and TPM version 2.0.
  • DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
  • A display larger than 9 inches, with at least 720p resolution.

Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro for personal use also require internet access and a Microsoft account during initial setup. Microsoft maintains the complete, current Windows 11 requirements, including processor eligibility.

  1. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10 and check whether the Windows 11 upgrade is offered. Microsoft says rollout timing can vary by device.
  2. If you need a separate eligibility check, use Microsoft’s PC Health Check app and review the result for the specific requirement preventing an upgrade.
  3. Before installing, back up important files. Microsoft also recommends checking with the software publisher or accessory manufacturer if a particular app or device is essential.

Microsoft expects most software and accessories that worked with Windows 10 to work with Windows 11, but that is not a guarantee for every program, driver, or peripheral. Its Windows 11 upgrade FAQ recommends confirming specific compatibility with the relevant publisher or manufacturer.

What changes when you move to Windows 11?

Windows 11 combines a refreshed interface with features that may matter more to some users than others. Microsoft’s Windows 11 and Windows 10 comparison describes features including:

  • File handling and multitasking: File Explorer tabs, seamless redocking on supported devices, and interface changes for arranging and returning to open work.
  • Accessibility and input: Live Captions, Windows Studio Effects on supported hardware, and voice access. Windows 10 already has some related functions, including voice typing.
  • Sign-in and protection: Passkeys integrated with Windows Hello and Smart App Control, subject to device and configuration requirements.
  • Gaming and power: Auto HDR, windowed-game optimizations, and energy recommendations. Gaming features depend on compatible hardware and games.
  • Convenience features: Widgets and, on supported hardware, wake-on-approach and lock-on-leave.

A feature list cannot tell you whether the new interface or tools suit your habits. If you rely on a specific workflow, check the exact app, device, and feature requirements before upgrading.

Is Windows 11 faster than Windows 10?

There is no basis here for promising that Windows 11 will make every PC faster. Microsoft’s April 2023 comparison reported selected benchmark results for particular Windows 11 Pro and Windows 10 Pro laptop configurations. For example, it reported up to 68.9% higher PCMark 10 overall ratings and up to 22.3% higher SYSmark 25 overall ratings. The comparison used systems with different hardware generations and configurations, so those vendor-published results do not isolate the effect of changing the operating system on the same PC.

For the decision most owners face in 2026, support status and Windows 11 eligibility are more useful than those older benchmark figures. If speed is your concern, judge your own PC and workload rather than assuming an OS upgrade alone will deliver a particular gain.

What to do if your Windows 10 PC is not eligible

Do not assume that the end of support makes a working computer stop working. Instead, choose a plan based on how long you need the PC, its condition, the apps and accessories you rely on, and whether you can move your work to another device.

  • Use ESU as a temporary bridge: If Microsoft’s current terms say your device qualifies, enrollment may provide limited security updates while you arrange a longer-term plan. Check the current eligibility and enrollment details; do not treat ESU as normal Windows 10 support.
  • Replace the PC: If the machine is too old for Windows 11 or no longer meets your needs, a Windows 11 PC is the straightforward supported path. The free upgrade offer applies to qualifying existing PCs, not to the cost of a replacement.
  • Check requirements before spending: A PC that fails one requirement may need a different decision from one that meets them all. Confirm the processor and firmware/TPM status before concluding that replacement is necessary.

Windows 10 LTSC and IoT editions have separate lifecycles; their support dates should not be confused with those for ordinary Windows 10 Home and Pro.
