Neither Windows 11 nor macOS is the best choice for every developer. Choose macOS if you need to build locally with Xcode; choose Windows 11 if your work depends on Windows-native tools, applications, or testing. For many web, backend, and cross-platform projects, either can work—especially when containers or remote development provide the environment your project needs.

Start with the software and platforms you must support

Choose a machine by working backward from the applications you need to build and test, rather than from broad claims that one operating system is better for programming. Before comparing hardware, answer these questions:

  • Which operating systems and devices must your project target?
  • Does the workflow require Xcode, Visual Studio, a Windows-only application, or another specific tool?
  • Does production run on Linux, Windows, or both, and how important is local environment parity?
  • Will you run containers or virtual machines locally? Do the machine’s processor architecture and memory meet the software’s current requirements?
  • Do employer policies, device management, or existing licenses limit your choice?
  • What hardware and budget are actually available?

Those answers determine whether the host operating system is essential or whether a container or remote machine can supply the environment you need.

Linux tools through WSL 2

WSL 2 lets developers use Linux tools and packages in a workflow hosted on Windows. Microsoft describes a development loop in which a service is built with Linux tools, packaged as a Docker container, and deployed to an Ubuntu virtual machine. This can be useful when production runs on Linux and you want a Linux-based local environment without replacing Windows. Microsoft’s WSL FAQ

For Docker Desktop’s documented WSL 2 setup on Windows, the listed prerequisites include at least 8 GB of system RAM, a supported 64-bit processor with SLAT, and hardware virtualization enabled in BIOS or UEFI. That 8 GB figure is an installation prerequisite, not a recommendation that 8 GB is enough for a full development workload. Check Docker’s current Windows installation requirements before configuring or buying a machine; supported versions and prerequisites can change.

Know where your code and tools run

Docker recommends keeping project files inside the Linux distribution when using its WSL 2 workflow. Its documented VS Code setup connects an editor window to that distribution through the VS Code WSL extension, while the editor client remains on Windows. This arrangement works across the Windows–Linux boundary, so keep track of where files are stored and which environment runs each tool. Docker’s WSL 2 development guide

Local development with Xcode

If you need to build and test Apple-platform applications locally with Xcode, choose a Mac that supports the Xcode release your project requires. Apple’s requirements page lists version-specific macOS compatibility, SDKs, and supported targets; check the entry for the exact release rather than assuming every version works with every Mac. Apple silicon requirements

Apple says, “Developing for visionOS requires a Mac with Apple silicon.” Separately, Apple’s Xcode 27 release notes state that “Xcode 27 will only install and run on Apple silicon Macs.” The Xcode 27 restriction applies to that release; do not assume it applies to older versions. Check Apple’s Xcode compatibility table for the release you plan to use and its requirements.

Windows-specific work on a Mac

If your project requires Windows-native applications, frameworks, or testing, a Mac may mean adding a Windows environment or using a remote Windows machine. The available documentation here does not establish one universal virtualization solution, so verify that the exact application is supported in your intended setup and that your employer permits it.

Containers and remote development can change the decision

Docker is supported on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Visual Studio Code’s documentation distinguishes local from remote development and notes that a remote environment can use the same operating system as production. If matching production matters more than matching your host, a development container or remote machine may provide the environment you need on either desktop platform. VS Code’s development environment guide

Windows has a documented WSL 2 path for Linux-oriented container work; Docker also supports macOS as a host. These support facts do not establish which platform runs containers faster on particular hardware. Choose based on compatibility and setup requirements, not an assumed performance ranking.

Quick decision guide

Workflow Practical starting point What to verify
iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, or visionOS development Mac capable of running the required Xcode release For visionOS development and Xcode 27, Apple specifies Apple silicon.
Windows desktop software, Windows-specific tooling, or Windows testing Windows 11, unless your team supplies a supported remote Windows environment Confirm the required tools, applications, and employer configuration.
Linux-oriented web, backend, or container work Either Windows 11 with WSL 2 or macOS Check Docker’s current host requirements; consider a container or remote Linux machine if production parity matters.
Mixed toolchain Whichever platform supports the non-negotiable tools and test targets with less extra setup List required IDEs, SDKs, target platforms, and employer policies before choosing.

What the available documentation does not settle

The cited documentation establishes tool support, workflows, and some system requirements. It does not provide a matched-hardware comparison of Windows 11 and macOS for speed, battery life, reliability, developer productivity, or total cost. Those outcomes depend on the specific machine, workload, software versions, and team setup; choose hardware against your actual requirements rather than treating either operating system as a universal winner.
