Use Settings > Windows Update for routine security and quality updates, and as your first choice for a feature update offered to your PC. Use an update assistant only when you need to install a feature update manually and your device is supported. Microsoft advises waiting until Windows Update offers a Windows 11 upgrade before using the separate Windows 11 Installation Assistant.

What is the difference between Windows Update and Update Assistant?

Windows Update is the built-in update service in Settings. It delivers both quality updates—typically security updates and smaller fixes—and feature updates, which add functionality and capabilities. Microsoft describes those two update types in its Windows Update FAQ.

“Update Assistant” can refer to different Microsoft utilities. The Windows Update Assistant is a manual route for installing a feature update when the PC has not received it automatically. The Windows 11 Installation Assistant is a separate tool for upgrading an eligible device to Windows 11. They are not interchangeable names for the same app.

Decision Windows Update in Settings Windows Update Assistant
Best use Routine quality and security updates, plus feature updates offered to the device Manually installing a feature update that has not arrived automatically
Update type Quality and feature updates Feature updates; not the normal route for routine quality updates
Timing and availability Microsoft may offer releases gradually based on rollout and device readiness Provides a manual route, but does not remove compatibility limits or Microsoft’s recommendation to wait for an offered Windows 11 upgrade before using its Installation Assistant
Hardware support Check Windows 11 eligibility and any organization policy Windows Update Assistant supports x86/64 devices, not ARM-based PCs
User action Check for updates, install what is offered, and use scheduling where available Start a manual feature-update installation and allow for restarts

When should I use Windows Update?

Start in Settings > Windows Update for ordinary security and quality updates. Select Check for updates, then install updates Windows offers for your device. Microsoft’s Windows update installation guidance describes this built-in route.

Use the same page as your first stop for a feature update. A release may be staged, so it might not appear on every compatible PC at once. Microsoft explains that devices can receive new functionality at different times in its Windows Update FAQ. An update not appearing yet is not, by itself, a reason to bypass the offer process.

When should I use an Update Assistant?

For a feature update that has not arrived automatically

If the PC has not received a feature update through Windows Update and you want to install it manually, Microsoft identifies the Windows Update Assistant as an option. The tool is intended for feature updates, rather than replacing Windows Update for routine security fixes. Its supported hardware is x86/64; Microsoft says it does not run on ARM-based PCs. See Microsoft’s Windows Update Assistant guidance.

For a Windows 11 upgrade

If you mean the Windows 11 Installation Assistant, first check Windows Update and wait for the Windows 11 offer when possible. Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation guidance specifically recommends waiting until the device is offered the upgrade through Windows Update before using that app. Confirm eligibility before proceeding; a manual tool does not make an unsupported device eligible.

How to choose the right update route

  1. Identify the update. Quality updates mainly provide security updates and smaller fixes; feature updates add functionality and capabilities.
  2. Check Windows Update. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install the updates offered for your PC.
  3. If a feature upgrade is missing, check eligibility and version. For Windows 11, consult Microsoft’s system requirements and follow its recommendation to wait for the upgrade offer before using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant.
  4. Use the manual Windows Update Assistant only where appropriate. It is for a feature update on supported x86/64 hardware, not ARM PCs or routine quality updates.
  5. Prepare before upgrading. Back up important files and allow time for downloading, installation, and restarts.
  6. Check with IT on a managed PC. An organization may control eligibility, update timing, or available routes; Microsoft directs managed-device users to their IT administrator.

How long do updates take to download and install?

There is no supported basis for saying that one route is always faster or more reliable. Microsoft says download time depends primarily on connection speed, network settings, and update size in its Windows Update FAQ. Installation and restarts also take time; Microsoft notes that a Windows 11 upgrade usually takes longer than a typical Windows 10 feature update. Windows Update may let you schedule the installation after downloading it, as described in Microsoft’s Windows 11 upgrade preparation guidance.
