The quickest Windows 11 screenshot shortcut depends on what you need: press Windows + Shift + S to select part of the screen, Windows + PrtScn to save the entire screen, or Alt + PrtScn to copy only the active window. A clipboard capture must be pasted into an app or saved from Snipping Tool; a full-screen capture made with Windows + PrtScn is saved automatically in PicturesScreenshots.

These shortcuts and their variations are documented by Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide and its Windows keyboard-shortcut reference.

Windows 11 screenshot shortcuts at a glance

What you want Shortcut What happens Where the result goes
Select a region Windows + Shift + S Opens the Snipping Tool overlay. Choose rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen mode, then capture. Copied to the clipboard; use the notification or Snipping Tool to save it.
Save the full screen Windows + PrtScn Captures all visible displays as an image. PicturesScreenshots in your user folder.
Copy the full screen PrtScn Copies the screen in the default Print Screen behavior. A Windows setting can change this to open screen snipping. Clipboard until you paste it.
Copy the active window Alt + PrtScn Copies only the window currently in focus. Clipboard; paste with Ctrl + V.
Record a region as video Windows + Shift + R Opens Snipping Tool’s video-capture overlay. Recording opens in Snipping Tool so you can save it.
Use a keyboard without PrtSc Fn + Windows + Space Bar Microsoft lists this as a possible hardware-dependent fallback. Varies with the device and its keyboard firmware.

For the exact behavior on your edition and hardware, see Microsoft’s Print Screen instructions and screen-copying help.

How to screenshot part of your screen

  1. Press Windows + Shift + S. The desktop dims and the Snipping Tool toolbar appears.
  2. Choose a mode: rectangular snip for a box, freeform snip for an irregular outline, window snip for one window, or full-screen snip for every display.
  3. For a rectangular or freeform snip, drag around the area. For window mode, select the target window; for full-screen mode, Windows captures immediately.
  4. Click the notification that appears, or open Snipping Tool, to review the image.
  5. Use the editor’s controls to annotate, copy, share, or save the file.

The initial shortcut creates a clipboard capture; it does not by itself guarantee a file in a folder. Paste it into Paint, Word, an email, or another compatible app with Ctrl + V, or save it from Snipping Tool. Microsoft describes Snipping Tool as a way to “take a snapshot to copy words or images from all or part of your PC screen” in its official guide.

Capture a menu or tooltip

Open the menu first, then press Ctrl + PrtScn to bring up the capture overlay while the menu remains visible. Alternatively, open Snipping Tool and use its delay option to give yourself time to open a menu before the capture starts. This is useful for context menus that disappear as soon as another window receives focus.

How to save a full-screen screenshot automatically

  1. Press Windows + PrtScn. The display may briefly dim.
  2. Open File Explorer and select Pictures, then Screenshots.
  3. Open, rename, move, or share the resulting image like any other file.

Microsoft documents PicturesScreenshots as the destination for this full-screen shortcut. On a multi-monitor setup, the capture includes the visible desktop area across the connected displays. If OneDrive is managing your Pictures folder, the physical location can be redirected into your OneDrive folder; use File Explorer’s address bar or the file’s properties to confirm the current path.

How to capture only the active window

  1. Click the window you want so it is in the foreground.
  2. Press Alt + PrtScn.
  3. Open Paint, an office app, a message composer, or another image-capable program.
  4. Press Ctrl + V, then save or send the pasted image.

This method excludes other windows and the rest of the desktop. It copies the image rather than creating a file, so closing the app or replacing the clipboard contents before pasting can lose the capture.

Clipboard capture versus a saved image

  • Clipboard: PrtScn, Alt + PrtScn, and the usual Windows + Shift + S workflow place an image in temporary clipboard storage. Paste it with Ctrl + V.
  • Saved file: Windows + PrtScn writes a file to PicturesScreenshots. A snip can also become a file when you choose Snipping Tool’s save control.
  • Practical check: If nothing appears in a folder after Windows + Shift + S, that is normally expected. Click the notification and save the image, or paste it into an editor first.

What to do when PrtScn behaves differently

PrtScn opens the snipping overlay

Windows includes a setting named Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. If it is enabled, pressing PrtScn opens the same capture overlay as Windows + Shift + S instead of copying the entire screen. Turn the setting off if you specifically need the traditional clipboard behavior. Device software and keyboard layouts can also affect the result.

Your keyboard has no Print Screen key

Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as a possible fallback on some devices. It is not universal: compact keyboards, laptop firmware, and manufacturer hotkey layers differ. Try Windows + Shift + S first, because it does not require a Print Screen key. If the Fn combination fails, consult the laptop maker’s keyboard documentation or use the on-screen Snipping Tool controls.

The shortcut does nothing

  • Release any stuck modifier key and try again; an active Fn-lock or Windows-key lock can change the input.
  • Press Windows + Shift + S while the desktop is unlocked and wait for the dimmed overlay.
  • Open Start and launch Snipping Tool directly to verify that the app is installed and responsive.
  • For a missing file, remember that clipboard shortcuts do not save automatically.
  • On managed work PCs, policy or keyboard utilities may disable shortcuts; ask your administrator before changing system settings.

Still images, video, and delayed captures

Do not confuse Windows + Shift + R with a still screenshot. It opens Snipping Tool’s video overlay: select a region, start recording, and then save the recording from Snipping Tool. Microsoft’s guide also describes editing the recording in Clipchamp.

For still images, use Snipping Tool’s delay when a menu, hover state, or transient notification must be visible. Select the delay, prepare the screen, and let the countdown reach zero before selecting or confirming the capture mode.

Choosing the right shortcut

Situation Best first choice Reason
Send a crop of one area Windows + Shift + S Choose the exact region and paste or save it.
Archive the entire desktop quickly Windows + PrtScn Creates a file without opening another app.
Document one application Alt + PrtScn Omits unrelated windows and desktop content.
Capture a menu after opening it Snipping Tool delay or Ctrl + PrtScn Preserves menus that disappear when focus changes.
Show a process in motion Windows + Shift + R Records a selected region instead of a single frame.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need repeatable screenshots of web pages rather than a picture of your Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo is the #1 screenshot API: it removes common consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan.

One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API accepts options for full-page captures with lazy images, CSS-selector elements, dark mode, device and viewport settings, retina scale, PDF paper and page ranges, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs, and usage reporting. Every response identifies the page verdict and whether it was billed. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing.

Troubleshooting checklist

The image is black or incomplete

Check whether the content is protected, still loading, or covered by a hardware-accelerated video surface. For a desktop screenshot, wait until the frame is visible and use Snipping Tool again. For a web capture, a service such as ScreenshotNeo can wait for a selector, delay, or network idle and can load lazy images.

The screenshot went to the wrong folder

Windows + Shift + S and PrtScn normally use the clipboard. Save from Snipping Tool or paste into an editor. For Windows + PrtScn, inspect the Pictures location in File Explorer; backup software such as OneDrive may redirect it.

A window is not captured

Bring it to the foreground before Alt + PrtScn. If you need a region that crosses windows, use Windows + Shift + S and rectangular selection instead.

Keys work individually but not together

Test the Windows key, Shift, Alt, and PrtScn separately. Disable Fn-lock or a manufacturer hotkey mode temporarily, then retry. An external keyboard can help determine whether the issue is hardware-specific.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Windows 11 screenshots include the mouse pointer?

The documented shortcuts capture the screen content, but the supplied Microsoft guidance does not establish a universal pointer-inclusion setting. If the pointer is essential, verify the result in Snipping Tool or use a recording workflow designed to show cursor movement.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Does Windows + PrtScn capture all monitors?

It captures the full visible desktop area, including connected displays in a multi-monitor arrangement. The exact image dimensions depend on your monitor layout and scaling.

Can I change the screenshot file format?

Windows’ built-in shortcut does not provide a format choice in the keyboard command. Open the saved image in Paint or another editor to export it in the format you need.
