Neither a clean install nor an in-place upgrade makes unsupported hardware eligible for Windows 11. If your existing Windows installation still works and Setup offers the option, an in-place upgrade can keep your files and apps. A clean install starts fresh but removes files, apps, settings, and manufacturer customizations. Microsoft warns that Windows 11 on an ineligible PC is not recommended and that updates are not guaranteed, regardless of installation method.

What “unsupported hardware” means

Unsupported describes whether a PC meets Windows 11’s hardware requirements; it is not a choice between installation methods. Among Microsoft’s minimum requirements are a compatible processor, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot-capable UEFI, at least 4 GB of memory, at least 64 GB of storage, and graphics and display requirements. Check the failed requirement with PC Health Check or Windows Update rather than assuming which component is responsible. Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications list the requirements.

Microsoft says, “Installing Windows 11 on this PC is not recommended and may result in compatibility issues.” It also warns that an unsupported device will not receive Microsoft support and that updates, including security updates, are not guaranteed. Those warnings apply whether you install from within Windows or boot installation media. Microsoft’s unsupported-device guidance explains the risks.

How the two installation methods compare

Consideration In-place upgrade Clean install
How it starts Run setup.exe from installation media while signed in to the existing Windows installation. Boot the PC from Windows installation media and install fresh.
Files and apps Setup can offer to keep personal files and apps, keep files only, or keep nothing. The keep-apps choice is least disruptive when offered. Removes personal files and apps from the existing installation.
Settings and manufacturer customizations Depends on the keep option selected; Microsoft’s cited procedure lists the available choices. Removes settings and manufacturer customizations along with apps and personal files.
Hardware eligibility Does not make an ineligible PC eligible. Does not make an ineligible PC eligible.
Best fit Keeping apps and files is important, the current Windows installation works, and Setup offers the desired keep option. You want a fresh start, accept removing the existing contents, and have verified backups and a plan to reinstall apps.

Microsoft describes a clean installation as “an advanced option to help start fresh on a device.” Its reinstallation guidance describes what is removed. Its media-based in-place instructions explain how to launch Setup from within Windows and choose what to keep.

Choose based on what you can afford to lose

Choose an in-place upgrade when keeping your apps matters

If Windows starts normally and Setup offers “Keep personal files and apps,” this is the practical option when you want to retain both. Review the choices Setup actually presents; if the keep-apps option is unavailable, do not assume you can preserve installed programs by continuing. Neither keeping files nor keeping apps changes Microsoft’s unsupported-device warning.

Choose a clean install only when you are ready for a fresh setup

A clean install is appropriate when you deliberately want to start over and have copies of everything you need. Plan to restore personal files and reinstall applications afterward. Booting from the installation media wipes the existing drive contents, so verify the backup before proceeding.

Do not choose either route as a hardware fix

If your aim is a supported Windows 11 device and the PC cannot meet the requirements, Microsoft points toward using a PC that does meet them. Installing Windows 11 by either route does not resolve the failed hardware check or guarantee future updates.

Prepare before installing

  1. Check the failed requirement. Use PC Health Check or Windows Update to identify why the PC is ineligible; consult Microsoft’s requirements page for the minimums.
  2. Back up your files. Microsoft lists an external hard drive or cloud storage as possible backup destinations. For a clean install, confirm that the backup is accessible and includes anything you intend to restore.
  3. Check activation and edition. Note the installed Windows edition and reinstall the edition that matches your license. Microsoft advises linking a digital license to a Microsoft account before reinstalling if needed. Significant hardware changes can require reactivation.
  4. Create installation media if needed. Follow Microsoft’s current Windows 11 media-creation instructions for the current release. A USB flash drive can be used to create installation media.
  5. Decide whether you can tolerate an unsupported system. Compatibility problems may occur, Microsoft support is not available for the unsupported installation, and updates are not guaranteed.

Windows 10 support is a separate issue

Microsoft ended ordinary Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on that date. That lifecycle change does not make an unsupported Windows 11 installation supported, nor does it alter Microsoft’s warning that updates for an ineligible Windows 11 PC are not guaranteed. Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support notice provides the date and details.
