Yes—Microsoft added a way to choose a custom Windows user-folder name during setup in specific Windows 11 preview builds. The option appears on the Device Name page, but Microsoft’s announcements do not establish that it is available on every retail Windows 11 PC.
What the new setup option changes
The choice sets the name of your individual account folder under the usual profile root, typically C:Users. It does not move the profile or change that system-wide root.
Microsoft announced the visible Device Name page option on March 13, 2026, for Dev build 26300.8068 (KB 5079464) and Beta build 26220.8062 (KB 5079458). The Windows Insider Program Team described it as a way to choose “a custom name for your user folder” while going through setup. Both announcements say the name must meet standard Windows naming requirements. See Microsoft’s Dev Channel announcement and Beta Channel announcement.
The option is setup-only. Microsoft says that if you skip it, Windows continues setup and uses the default folder name. This is not a supported ordinary rename control for an account that is already set up.

Where the feature is available
The cited Microsoft announcements document the page in Dev and Beta preview builds. They do not confirm general availability in the retail Windows 11 channel as of October 2, 2026, so do not assume the field will appear on every installation.
| Setup method | Documented builds and timing | How you enter the name |
|---|---|---|
| Visible setup option | Dev 26300.8068 (KB 5079464) and Beta 26220.8062 (KB 5079458), announced March 13, 2026 | Enter it on the Device Name page |
| Earlier command workflow | Dev 26220.6772, announced October 6, 2025; Release Preview 26100.7015 (Windows 11 24H2) and 26200.7015 (Windows 11 25H2), announced October 21, 2025 | Open Command Prompt during OOBE and run SetDefaultUserFolder.cmd |
How the Device Name page method works
If your preview build presents the custom-folder-name field during setup, enter the name you want on the Device Name page and continue. The choice must be made during setup; if you leave it blank, Windows uses its default naming behavior.

Microsoft’s March 2026 announcements require standard Windows naming rules but do not specify a character limit for the visible field. The earlier command documentation sets a maximum of 16 characters and specifies Unicode characters; treat those as documented constraints of that command workflow, not as a separately confirmed limit for every version of the newer page.
What SetDefaultUserFolder.cmd did
Before the visible page option, Microsoft documented a command-line route through the out-of-box experience (OOBE). In Dev build 26220.6772, users could open Command Prompt from the Microsoft-account sign-in page and set the folder name with a script in the OOBE directory. Microsoft later documented the same method for the October 2025 Release Preview builds.

- At the Microsoft-account sign-in page in OOBE, press Shift+F10 to open Command Prompt.
- Run
cd oobeand press Enter. - Run
SetDefaultUserFolder.cmd YourFolderName, replacingYourFolderNamewith the name you want, then press Enter. - Continue Windows setup. The custom name is applied only if it is valid; otherwise Windows uses its default generated name.
Microsoft’s October 6, 2025 Dev announcement documents the script and says that when no custom name is set, Windows generates a profile-folder name from the Microsoft-account email address. The October 21, 2025 Release Preview announcement documents the method for 24H2 and 25H2 preview builds.

The setup choice controls the account directory name; it does not change the system-wide profile root. Microsoft’s separate ProfilesDirectory deployment setting controls that root, normally C:Users. Microsoft warns that changing ProfilesDirectory can leave Microsoft Store apps unsupported. See Microsoft’s documentation on relocating the Users and ProgramData directories.
