Microsoft documented a File Explorer dark-mode bug after the optional Windows 11 preview update KB5070311, published December 1, 2025: Explorer could briefly show a blank white screen before loading files and folders. Microsoft says the issue is addressed in KB5072033, but that is not a guarantee that every configuration will behave identically.

What the File Explorer bug looked like

The flash appeared in File Explorer dark mode. Microsoft described a blank white screen shown briefly before files and folders loaded. It was not limited to launching Explorer: the documented triggers included navigating to or from Home or Gallery, launching Explorer to Home, creating a new tab, turning the Details pane on or off, and choosing “More details” during a file copy. Microsoft’s KB5070311 release note lists these behaviors.

The bug was associated with KB5070311, an optional preview update published December 1, 2025—not a newly identified October 2026 issue. Contemporary coverage discussed it in the context of Windows 11’s broader dark-mode changes. Windows Central reported seeing an approximately one-second flash in its own testing; that is an outlet observation, not an official duration or a measure of how often the problem affected users. TechRadar’s contemporaneous coverage also characterized the sudden brightness as jarring, particularly in low-light use.

What to check if Explorer still flashes white

  1. Check whether the documented conditions fit. The issue Microsoft described required File Explorer dark mode and followed KB5070311. Note whether it happens during one of the listed actions, such as opening a new tab or switching to Gallery.
  2. Install available Windows updates. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install applicable updates offered for your device. Microsoft identifies KB5072033 as the update that addresses this issue; later servicing may also be relevant, but the available documentation does not establish that a particular later build resolves every configuration.
  3. Try the same action again after updating. If the flash persists, record your Windows version and OS build and which Explorer action triggers it. That information can help distinguish this documented regression from another display or Explorer problem.

A Microsoft Q&A thread from January 2026 includes a moderator pointing to KB5072033. The original poster said flashing continued on build 26200.7623, and another flashing case was later described. This is an individual support thread, not evidence that the issue remained widespread. Read the January 2026 Microsoft Q&A thread.

What later Windows 11 updates establish

Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 preview update documentation for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 lists other File Explorer changes: handling for downloaded-file previews, persistence of expanded or collapsed Home sections, improved reliability for cloud thumbnails in Details, and a fix for an address-bar issue. Those notes provide later release context, but do not independently confirm that the KB5070311 white flash is absent on every current system. See Microsoft’s KB5124010 release note.

The same page says Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions reach end of updates on October 13, 2026. If you use one of those editions, check Microsoft’s support guidance for your device and plan to move to a supported version rather than relying on updates for an edition after its stated end date.
