Windows 10 PCs did not stop working, but Microsoft no longer provides them with security updates, software updates, or technical support. If you still use one, check whether it can upgrade to Windows 11 and whether it is receiving updates now; the best next step depends on your PC’s eligibility, your edition, and your need for continued support.
Why 2025 became the Windows 11 decision point
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says the software will continue to function, but unsupported systems no longer receive Windows 10 security updates, software updates, or technical support. That leaves a Windows 10 PC more exposed to viruses and malware over time. Microsoft’s end-of-support guidance explains the change.
The deadline did not make every Windows 10 computer incompatible or unusable. It did make continued use a decision about support and risk rather than simply a preference for a familiar interface. As of October 8, 2026, Windows 11 is already in its next servicing cycle, so check the current version and lifecycle dates for your edition before making plans.
Choose among upgrading, temporary support, and replacement
| Path | What it means | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrade the existing PC | Eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 PCs that meet Windows 11’s minimum hardware requirements can receive a free upgrade, according to Microsoft. Use PC Health Check or Windows Update to confirm eligibility and availability. Microsoft’s system requirements describe the conditions. | Your PC passes Microsoft’s eligibility check and its hardware still suits your needs. |
| Use Consumer ESU temporarily | Microsoft says Consumer Extended Security Updates can protect Windows 10 devices through October 12, 2027. ESU is a temporary support path; it does not make an incompatible computer eligible for Windows 11. See Microsoft’s Consumer ESU information. | You need more time before upgrading or replacing a Windows 10 PC. |
| Replace the PC | Choose a Windows 11-compatible computer if your current one cannot meet the requirements or no longer fits your workload. Consider setup, data transfer, and the configuration you need as well as the purchase cost. | Your current hardware is ineligible, unsuitable, or not worth keeping in service. |
Check your PC before acting
- Identify the edition, version, and management status. Confirm whether the PC runs Windows 10 version 22H2 and whether it is managed by an employer or school. For a managed device, ask your organization’s IT administrator before making changes.
- Run Microsoft’s eligibility check. Use PC Health Check or check Windows Update for an offered upgrade. Do not rely on the PC’s age or a short list of requirements: Windows 11 also has processor, memory, storage, firmware, TPM, graphics, display, account, and connectivity requirements. Microsoft identifies the processor clock speed and core count as components that cannot be upgraded.
- If eligible, prepare and follow the offered upgrade path. Back up important files, then use Windows Update’s upgrade offer rather than forcing an installation. Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use require an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial setup.
- If ineligible, weigh the bridge against replacement. Consumer ESU can extend protection for a limited period, while a compatible replacement moves you to Windows 11. Compare the time you need, device condition, and cost rather than assuming that every Windows 10 PC must be replaced immediately.
When shopping for a replacement, compare processor platform, memory and storage configuration, price, portability, ports, warranty and support, and accessibility needs. A Copilot+ PC is relevant only if you expect to use its hardware-dependent AI functions.

What changed in Windows 11, and how 25H2 fits
Windows 11 version 25H2 is an enablement package for devices already updated to version 24H2. Many changes have arrived through ongoing monthly updates, rather than as one large feature release. Microsoft’s Windows 11 25H2 documentation describes features released through continuous innovation updates, including Agent in Settings, improved Windows search, Click to Do, and AI actions in File Explorer. Availability and rollout can vary by device, market, and administrator controls; managed PCs may not receive or enable features at the same time as personal devices.
AI tools depend on the device
Several headline AI capabilities are specific to Copilot+ PCs, not every Windows 11 computer. Microsoft defines this device class as having an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS); that is a hardware threshold, not a general Windows 11 performance result.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Recall (preview) can search locally saved and locally analyzed screen snapshots using natural language. Microsoft says Recall is disabled and removed by default on managed devices.
- Improved search on Copilot+ PCs adds semantic indexing, while the Settings agent uses on-device AI. Access depends on compatible hardware and rollout.
- Click to Do and AI actions in File Explorer are among features Microsoft lists in its 25H2 documentation; they are not a promise that every upgraded PC will have every capability.
Microsoft’s October 16, 2025 Windows Experience Blog post describes File Explorer actions such as editing images or summarizing documents. Summarizing Microsoft 365 files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint requires an active Microsoft 365 subscription and a Copilot license, according to Microsoft’s file summarization guidance.
Check the support lifecycle for your Windows 11 edition
Windows 11 support dates vary by version and edition. Microsoft’s lifecycle listings as of October 8, 2026, show the following dates; check the Home and Pro lifecycle page and the Enterprise and Education lifecycle page again before relying on them.

The official information cited here does not establish a controlled, independent comparison showing that Windows 11 is faster, improves battery life, or boosts productivity by a particular percentage versus Windows 10 on equivalent hardware. Treat broad performance claims cautiously. Your experience will depend on the PC, its configuration, software, and workload; decide based on support status, eligibility, and the features you actually need.
