If VLC stops after a gaming VOD, first identify what VLC is playing: local video files, YouTube URLs, or a stream passed to VLC by another tool. If playback stops exactly when an item ends, check that another item is queued and that VLC’s repeat mode matches your goal. If it stops mid-video, investigate the source or stream instead; a playlist setting cannot make an unavailable URL playable.
First identify how the VOD reaches VLC
These playback paths can fail for different reasons, so do not start by changing several VLC settings at once.
| Playback path | What to check first |
|---|---|
| Local video files | Whether the file exists, the next item is in the playlist, and the playlist still points to the right file location. A third-party VLC 3.0.x guide updated in July 2026 notes that saved playlists may store absolute paths, which can break if files are moved. VLC Help playlist guide |
| YouTube URLs in VLC | Whether the VOD remains accessible and whether VLC can still resolve the URL. YouTube compatibility can change, so a URL that once worked may not continue to work. |
| A YouTube stream piped through yt-dlp | Whether the VOD or live stream is still available and whether yt-dlp reports an extraction or playback error. The yt-dlp documentation describes piping output to VLC, but that example does not guarantee uninterrupted continuation. yt-dlp output documentation |
| A playlist being watched on YouTube | Use YouTube’s own repeat control. It is separate from VLC’s playlist and repeat behavior. YouTube Help: loop videos or playlists |
Fix a playlist that stops exactly at the end of a video
- Open the VLC playlist. In the VLC 3.0.x tutorial, the shortcut is Ctrl+L. Shortcuts and interface details may differ by version. VLC Help playlist guide
- Check the queue. Confirm the next VOD or file is actually listed. If the playlist contains only one item, VLC has nothing else to advance to.
- Choose the repeat behavior you want. Repeat All loops the full list; repeat-one repeats the current item. Button placement and wording can vary by VLC version, so check the installed version’s controls rather than assuming a particular menu path.
- Check the next entry. For local files, verify the file still exists at the saved path. For URL entries, verify that the video is still accessible; a queued URL does not guarantee that its stream can be opened.
If you are watching the playlist on YouTube rather than in VLC, use YouTube’s playlist Loop control. YouTube documents looping a single video and looping a playlist as separate actions; changing that control does not change a separate VLC queue. YouTube Help
If VLC stops in the middle of a video
A repeat setting controls what happens when an item finishes; it cannot repair a failed or unavailable source. For a YouTube URL or yt-dlp stream, check that the VOD has not been removed or made unavailable, that the stream has not ended, and whether the tool reports an error. yt-dlp documents both VLC piping and playlist handling, but its YouTube compatibility and site behavior can change. Treat this route as dependent on the source and extractor, not as a guaranteed continuous player. yt-dlp: streaming to other programs · yt-dlp playlist options · yt-dlp YouTube notes

Use one local file to isolate the cause
- Open one known-good local video in VLC and let it play through.
- If local files advance but YouTube-derived entries stop, focus on the URL, source availability, or extractor path.
- If local files also stop, recheck the queue, repeat mode, file paths, the specific item that fails, and the installed VLC version.
This comparison helps narrow the cause because local files and URL-based streams use different playback paths; it does not by itself prove which component failed.
Choose the simplest playback path for the job
- Use YouTube playback when you want to watch a YouTube playlist and use its native loop controls.
- Use VLC with local files when you have the videos saved locally and want a local queue. Keep the files at the locations referenced by the playlist.
- Use VLC with URL or yt-dlp streams only if you are comfortable troubleshooting source availability and extractor compatibility. yt-dlp documents piping to VLC and playlist downloads, but neither removes the dependency on YouTube access and compatibility.
What to record if it still stops
Before changing more settings, note whether playback stops mid-video or at its end, the exact error shown, your VLC version, and whether the playlist entry is a local file or a URL. Those details distinguish a queue/repeat issue from a source or stream failure.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep an uploaded gaming VOD looping as a YouTube live stream rather than fix VLC playback, StreamNeo runs the playback in the cloud: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not fix VLC or start a camera stream.
