Windows 11 is most compelling if you regularly arrange several apps, use accessibility tools, connect a phone to your PC, or need a specific gaming or AI feature. First check whether your PC is eligible: Microsoft recommends using PC Health Check or Windows Update, and an upgrade is not a reason by itself to buy a new computer.
Check whether your PC can run Windows 11
Before weighing features, confirm eligibility. Microsoft says an upgrade requires a currently supported version of Windows 10 and hardware that meets Windows 11’s minimum requirements. Check with PC Health Check or Windows Update; the timing of upgrade availability can vary by device. If the PC is reported ineligible, confirm the result and check the computer maker’s compatibility information before deciding what to do.
What the minimum requirements mean
Microsoft lists a compatible 64-bit processor with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, and TPM 2.0 among the requirements. These are minimums, not a recommendation for a comfortable modern workload. Check Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements for the full and current list.
Eligibility does not mean every feature will work on every eligible PC. For example, Auto HDR needs an HDR monitor, and the three-column Snap layouts need a display at least 1920 effective pixels wide. Gaming and AI features can have their own graphics, storage, driver, or processor requirements.

Reasons Windows 11 may feel better in daily use
Snap makes multitasking easier to arrange
If you often keep several apps open, Snap layouts provide a quick way to arrange windows on screen. Microsoft’s recent update overview also describes usability improvements, including inline tips and keyboard-shortcut guidance in Snap interactions. The benefit is practical rather than universal: it matters most when you regularly move between windows and have enough screen space to use a layout comfortably. Larger three-column layouts have the display-width requirement noted above.
Accessibility and input options can support particular workflows
Microsoft’s update overview describes changes to tools such as Narrator and voice typing, along with controller-related input options. These may be meaningful if you rely on spoken interaction, screen reading, or a controller in your setup. Check the specific feature’s availability and device requirements rather than assuming every accessibility or input improvement applies to every PC.

Phone Link and sharing connect some PC and phone tasks
Microsoft presents Phone Link as a way to interact with a connected phone from a Windows PC. The connection requirements differ by platform: the feature page says iOS requires Bluetooth, while Android requires Wi-Fi. Phone integration is therefore not identical across phones or workflows. Windows’ update overview also describes sharing improvements, which may help if you frequently move content between apps or devices.
Gaming features depend on the display and components
Windows 11 includes gaming and creative capabilities, but the useful question is whether your hardware supports the feature you want. Auto HDR requires an HDR monitor. DirectStorage has supported storage, driver, and graphics requirements. These are feature-specific reasons to consider Windows 11, not guarantees that every game will load faster or look better on every eligible PC. Review Microsoft’s system requirements alongside the specifications for your display and components.

AI features are not all available to every Windows 11 PC
Microsoft’s current update overview describes AI-related experiences, but standard Windows 11 features and Copilot+ PC experiences are distinct categories. Microsoft specifies a qualifying NPU capable of 40+ TOPS, plus additional memory and storage requirements, for Copilot+ PCs. That figure is a hardware qualification, not a measure of how much an individual user will benefit. Availability can also depend on the device, market, release, and rollout; check Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC specifications and current feature information before choosing hardware for a particular AI capability.
Is upgrading worth it for your PC?
| Your situation | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Your PC is eligible and you use several apps at once | Snap layouts may make everyday window organization more convenient, especially on a sufficiently wide display. |
| You depend on accessibility or alternative input tools | Look up the specific Narrator, voice typing, or input change that matters to you and confirm its requirements. |
| You want phone tasks on your PC | Check whether Phone Link supports your phone and whether its connection requirements suit your setup. |
| You want a specific gaming or AI feature | Verify the display, graphics, storage, driver, NPU, and other requirements for that feature; Windows 11 alone does not guarantee access. |
| Your PC is ineligible | Confirm the result and check with the manufacturer. Microsoft says a new PC may be needed; replacing a computer is not necessary for every Windows 11 upgrade. |
If you do need a replacement, compare confirmed Windows 11 compatibility, processor support, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot support, and memory and storage suited to your workload. Also consider display size and resolution if Snap is important, plus any dedicated hardware required for your gaming or Copilot+ goals. If your current PC is eligible, weigh the features you will actually use against your own upgrade timing rather than treating a new purchase as part of the upgrade by default.

What to check before deciding
- Run PC Health Check or check Windows Update to assess eligibility.
- Identify the one or two Windows 11 features that would change your daily workflow.
- Verify the hardware and availability requirements for those features; minimum system requirements alone do not establish access to them.
- If the PC is ineligible, confirm compatibility with its manufacturer before considering a replacement.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 feature page and Windows 11 update overview describe feature and update changes. Availability may vary by device and market, and some features continue to roll out.
