A Windows 11 feature update changes the version of Windows and typically adds features or enhancements. A cumulative quality or security update services the version already installed by bundling new fixes with earlier fixes. The distinction matters for version support, timing, disk space, and what to check when an update is offered—but monthly updates can also bring features, so the update label alone does not tell the whole story.
Feature update vs. cumulative update at a glance
| Question | Feature update | Cumulative quality or security update |
|---|---|---|
| What changes? | Changes the Windows version and introduces features or enhancements. | Maintains the installed version with security, reliability, and other fixes, including previously released fixes. |
| Typical timing | Usually once a year, in the second half of the calendar year. | Monthly security release, normally on the second Tuesday; optional previews often arrive in the fourth week. |
| Can it include features? | Yes. | Yes. Some Windows 11 features arrive through periodic servicing updates, sometimes first in an optional preview. |
| Support effect | Starts the support lifecycle for the new Windows version: 24 months for Home and Pro, or 36 months for Enterprise and Education. | Does not create a new Windows version lifecycle. |
| Typical free-space guidance | 6–11 GB or more, according to Microsoft’s typical guidance. | 2–3 GB or more, according to Microsoft’s typical guidance. |
| Can it be removed? | Rollback availability depends on the update and the device’s recovery state; it is not guaranteed. | Some updates can be uninstalled, but some cannot. |
Microsoft’s Windows client release-cycle documentation describes annual feature updates and monthly security releases. Its Windows 11 update history lists released updates; consult the entry for your version and KB number for release-specific details.
What a feature update changes
A feature update moves a PC to a newer Windows 11 version. It can add features and enhancements, and Microsoft describes the annual feature update as typically cumulative, meaning it also includes previously released fixes. It begins a new support lifecycle for that version. Microsoft says annual feature updates are released in the second half of the calendar year; that is the general schedule, not a guarantee that every eligible PC is offered the update on the same date.
Support duration depends on edition: Microsoft’s current release-cycle guidance gives Home and Pro versions 24 months of support and Enterprise and Education versions 36 months. A feature update therefore has a version-support consequence beyond the visible changes to Windows. Check the release information for the version and edition you use rather than assuming all editions share the same end-of-support date.

What a cumulative update changes—and what “cumulative” means
A monthly cumulative quality or security update patches the Windows version already installed rather than creating a new version. The monthly security release normally combines new security fixes with previously released security fixes and nonsecurity content from the prior optional preview. That accumulation is why users installing the latest monthly release generally do not need to install every earlier monthly update one by one. Microsoft manages the applicable packages through Windows Update; users generally do not need to manage checkpoint packages themselves.
Microsoft’s Windows update servicing documentation explains servicing terminology and delivery. The monthly security update is commonly called Patch Tuesday, a quality update, a security update, or the latest cumulative update (LCU). Optional nonsecurity preview updates are also cumulative and can let organizations and users validate fixes before the next monthly security release. Microsoft may issue an out-of-band update when an exceptional issue or vulnerability cannot wait for the regular schedule.

Why a monthly update can still add features
“Feature update” does not mean that every new Windows feature arrives only once a year. Microsoft’s Windows 11 feature delivery guidance says features can arrive through annual feature updates, periodic servicing, and Microsoft Store app updates. Some changes may first appear in an optional preview and later be included in a monthly security update.
Microsoft can use Controlled Feature Rollout to enable a feature gradually on eligible devices. As a result, two PCs on a similar Windows version may not receive the same feature on the same day. A monthly update can install successfully even if a particular feature is not yet visible on that PC; availability can depend on rollout and device eligibility.

When updates arrive and how many restarts to expect
- Monthly security updates: Normally released on the second Tuesday of the month.
- Optional preview updates: Typically released in the fourth week and may provide early access to nonsecurity fixes.
- Feature updates: Usually released annually in the second half of the year.
- Out-of-band updates: Released as needed for urgent issues or vulnerabilities.
Microsoft’s August 14, 2026 guidance says eligible updates released on or after July 28, 2026, that require a restart are grouped with the monthly security update to target one restart per month. This gradual rollout applies to Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1; it may not yet be active on every device. Defender security intelligence, AI component updates, critical or expedited driver updates, emergency updates, and out-of-band fixes may still install promptly, and many updates do not require a restart. This is version- and rollout-specific behavior, not a permanent promise for every Windows version or update.
How much free space to allow
Microsoft’s current Support guidance gives typical free-space estimates of 6–11 GB or more for a feature update and 2–3 GB or more for a quality update. These are estimates, not minimum requirements or guarantees. Actual space needs vary with the update path, optional features, installed languages, drivers, and PC configuration. Microsoft also says additional space is typically retained temporarily to support removing an update, but that storage guidance is not a promise that every update can be rolled back for ten days. See Microsoft’s free-space guidance for Windows updates before clearing files or changing storage.

- Open Settings > Windows Update and review the offered update. A new Windows version indicates a feature update; a KB identifier generally identifies a specific quality or security release.
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history to check what has already installed. Note the Windows version, edition, release name, and KB number when looking for a fix or troubleshooting a failure.
- For a feature that seems to be missing after an update, check its release information and rollout status. A feature delivered through periodic servicing may be phased rather than immediately available on every eligible device.
The exact update offered can depend on Windows version, edition, device eligibility, and rollout. Microsoft’s release-health information and the specific KB page are the best places to confirm details for a particular release.

If an update causes a problem
Uninstalling is not available for every update. Removing a security update can leave the PC exposed to the issue it fixed, so weigh that risk and use the update’s release information before proceeding. If removal is appropriate, Microsoft documents these routes in its Windows update uninstall instructions:
- From Windows, go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, then choose an available update to remove.
- If Windows cannot be accessed, use Windows Recovery Environment > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
If the update is not listed for removal, or Windows does not offer the recovery option, that update may not be uninstallable through these methods. Feature-update rollback also depends on the update and the device’s recovery state; do not assume that every version change can be reversed.
Should you pause updates?
Microsoft’s current pause guidance allows updates to be paused for up to 35 days. Pausing delays security and other updates; it does not permanently disable them. Use it as a short delay when necessary, not as a long-term replacement for installing security updates. Microsoft’s instructions for pausing Windows updates show the current controls.
