Use the manufacturer’s RGB software when its controls better fit your particular device, effect, profile, or workflow. Compatibility and capabilities vary by model, so neither option is a universal winner.
How the two options differ
| Decision | Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting | Manufacturer RGB software |
|---|---|---|
| Where you control lighting | Windows Settings, with global controls and settings for individual compatible devices. Microsoft Support | The app supplied by the device maker. Features and supported models depend on the product and software version; the available official sources do not provide a complete current cross-brand comparison. |
| Compatibility | Requires a device implementation of the HID LampArray standard. Support can depend on the device’s implementation and firmware. Microsoft Learn | Depends on the maker’s app and the exact model. Check the manufacturer’s current documentation. |
| Using devices from different brands together | Can coordinate compatible devices through Windows’ shared controls and open standard. Compatibility is not automatic for every RGB product. Microsoft Learn | Do not assume one company’s app can control another brand’s hardware; behavior depends on the apps and devices involved. |
| App control | Compatible foreground apps and prioritized background controllers can affect which software controls a device. Microsoft Learn | A running RGB controller can compete with Windows’ background controller, depending on priority settings. Microsoft Support |
| Color consistency | Color and brightness may vary somewhat between devices from different manufacturers. Microsoft Learn | Comparative measurements against Windows are not established; behavior is device-specific. |
When to choose Dynamic Lighting
Choose Windows’ built-in controls when your device is supported and your priority is convenient central management rather than a particular vendor-specific workflow. Microsoft’s settings let you configure compatible devices together or adjust an individual device. You can set brightness, colors, and effects, and manage how foreground and background apps interact with lighting.
For example, you can use a shared setup across compatible peripherals, then give one device its own settings. Individual device settings take precedence over the global settings for that device. Microsoft Support
When to use manufacturer RGB software
Keep or use the maker’s app if it provides the controls you need for your particular product or fits the way you manage its lighting. The available official documentation does not establish which advanced effects are exclusive to each manufacturer app, or offer a comprehensive current feature-by-feature comparison. Check the current documentation for your exact model rather than assuming a feature—or compatibility—based on brand alone.

- Direct Connection Without a Motherboard: No motherboard ARGB support is required. Simply plug it into the power supply's SATA interface for power, easily converting and controlling 5V 3-pin ARGB products. Even older PCs can achieve stunning lighting effects.
- Multi-Mode Control: Built-in multiple lighting modes, including single color, cycle, and rainbow; M key switches modes, S key offers 8-level speed adjustment (press and hold for 4 seconds to turn the lights on/off), C key changes color and offers 6 levels of brightness adjustment.
- Long Cable Compatibility: The 3-pin interface cable is 160±10mm long, and the SATA cable is 500±10mm long. The extension cable design solves the problem of insufficient cable length; the controller is compact and doesn't take up much space.
- Pin Protection: The 3-pin interface is equipped with a protective cover to effectively prevent pin bending and deformation, extending the lifespan of the device and ensuring safer use and storage.
- Plug and Play: No complicated settings required. Simply plug it in to control the lighting. Compatible with various 5V 3-pin ARGB devices, creating a personalized lighting atmosphere for your case, fans, and other hardware. A must-have for gamers.
How to check whether your device works
- Open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.
- Look for your peripheral in the device cards. If it appears, select it to review and change its lighting options.
- If it does not appear, check the manufacturer’s current support information for the exact model and firmware. Dynamic Lighting support depends on HID LampArray implementation; Microsoft’s 2023 rollout guidance also specified the latest firmware as a requirement. Microsoft Support
Microsoft’s device documentation lists Logitech G LIGHTSYNC RGB devices as supported, but that brand-level listing does not establish compatibility for every Logitech G model. It also identifies partners and planned support across some Acer, SteelSeries, ASUS ROG, Twinkly, Razer, OMEN, HP Victus, and HyperX products; those statements are not proof that every model is compatible or currently available. Verify the exact product and firmware. Microsoft Learn
Why Dynamic Lighting may not change your keyboard or other device
If Windows’ brightness or effect controls appear to do nothing, another lighting controller may have priority. Open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting, expand Background light control, and inspect the order of controllers. If you want Windows to manage the device in the background, move its controller higher than a competing RGB app. The priority order determines which background app gets control. Check which app is controlling the lights
A compatible foreground app can take control when the relevant option is enabled. Background controllers can also be ordered in Settings. Review both behaviors if a lighting change works only while a particular app is open, or stops working when you switch apps. Microsoft Support
Check the USB port and device behavior
Background settings are associated with the device and its port. Reconnecting a peripheral to another USB port can make it appear as a different device. Also, a device not selected for background control may operate autonomously, following its firmware’s default lighting behavior. Microsoft Learn

- Two Devices in One - Works with both ARGB PWM fans and iCUE LINK devices with a System Hub for seamless integration of two fan and lighting ecosystems
- Two Ecosystems, One Interface - With support for both types of fans and lighting, it enables control of connected devices through one streamlined interface
- Two ARGB and PWM Channels - There are two channels for control of PWM and ARGB fans, with each channel supporting up to six daisy-chained fans, which is twice the number of fans supported by the Commander Core XT
- Intelligent Fan Control - CORSAIR iCUE software offers intelligent fan detection and allows for precise control of group fan speeds and the ability to set custom fan curves
- Synchronized RGB Lighting - Easily synchronize RGB lighting across all fans in each channel with supports for up to 50 LEDs per ARGB channel
What to expect from mixed-brand lighting
Dynamic Lighting can coordinate compatible devices, but a shared setting does not guarantee an identical visual result across brands. Microsoft notes that colors and brightness may vary slightly between manufacturers’ devices. If matching shades matter, judge the result on the actual peripherals rather than assuming their colors will appear exactly alike. Microsoft Learn
Quick Recap
Best Value
- [Easy cable management] The product is not only the lighting interface connector of the ARGB fan, but also the hub of the PWM fan, connecting the power supply interface and lighting interface of 12 PC fans at the same time, and there are 4PIN interfaces and 3PIN ARGB interfaces on both sides to connect, plug and play, which can keep the cables of the ARGB fan lights and PWM fans neat (Note: 12V 4PIN RGB interface devices are not supported, please do not plug in!)
- [Support ARGB and PWM] The fan hub not only supports ARGB fans, ARGB light strips and other lighting devices, but also supports PWM fan interfaces, which can realize the lighting effect synchronization of 3PIN 5V lighting interfaces and the synchronization speed of PWM fans after connecting the corresponding interfaces of the motherboard
- [Technical details] This product has a red interface for PWM speed recognition interface, due to the limitation of the PWM motherboard IC reading principle, only the speed of a single fan plugged into the red interface is recognized
