Microsoft says Windows 11 26H1 runs on a different Windows core from 26H2 and cannot update directly to it. The company says 26H1 devices will have a path to a future Windows release; a September 30, 2026 report from Windows Central expects that release to reunite the platform lines in 2027, likely as Windows 11 27H2. Microsoft has not confirmed that version name or timing.
Why Windows 11 has both 26H1 and 26H2
The two labels describe different release paths, not a simple sequence in which every PC moves from H1 to H2. Microsoft designed 26H1 for select new hardware, while 26H2 is the mainstream second-half update for eligible existing PCs.
26H1 is for select new devices
Microsoft says Windows 11, version 26H1 enables next-generation silicon and hardware innovation, and is available only on select new devices arriving in the first quarter of 2026. The first identified devices use Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Series processors. Microsoft also says 26H1 is not offered as an in-place update for existing 24H2 or 25H2 devices. See Microsoft’s Windows 11, version 26H1 overview, published February 10, 2026.
26H2 is the mainstream update for eligible PCs
Microsoft announced 26H2 general availability on September 29, 2026, for eligible devices running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2. Those versions share a servicing branch and codebase, so 26H2 arrives as a small enablement package rather than a full platform transition; installation requires one restart. Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog announcement describes the delivery method.

Why a 26H1 PC cannot update to 26H2
Microsoft says 26H1 is based on a different Windows core. As a result, a PC running 26H1 cannot install the 26H2 annual feature update, which targets eligible 24H2 and 25H2 devices. The Windows Insider Blog stated on June 19, 2026, that devices running 26H1 “will not be able to update to version 26H2” for this reason; Microsoft’s 26H1 support page likewise says those devices cannot update to the second-half 2026 feature release. This is an intentional platform distinction, not evidence that the PC is broken or missing an ordinary update.
How 26H1 and 26H2 differ
| Question | Windows 11 26H1 | Windows 11 26H2 |
|---|---|---|
| Who gets it? | Select new devices, first identified with Snapdragon X2 Series processors, arriving in Q1 2026, according to Microsoft. | Eligible existing Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices, according to Microsoft’s September 29, 2026 announcement. |
| Platform basis | A different, newer Windows core than 26H2, according to Microsoft. | Shares the servicing branch and codebase with 24H2 and 25H2, according to Microsoft. |
| Update path | Cannot update to 26H2; Microsoft says affected devices will have a path to a future Windows release. | Follows the mainstream annual servicing path for eligible 24H2 and 25H2 PCs. |
| Installation approach | Preinstalled on select new hardware; the installation method for a future convergence release is not confirmed. | Small enablement package with one restart for eligible devices, per Microsoft. |
Could Windows 11 27H2 reunite the platforms?
That is the current expectation, not an announced Microsoft commitment. The September 30, 2026 Windows Central report says Microsoft plans to bring users back onto one platform in 2027 and identifies 27H2 as the likely vehicle, while noting that Microsoft has not confirmed the 27H2 name or release plan. Microsoft has said 26H1 devices will have a path to a future Windows release, but its published statements cited here do not identify that release as 27H2.

It is also not established whether the future transition would use a full OS upgrade or how it would be delivered. The one-restart enablement-package process Microsoft described for 26H2 applies to eligible 24H2 and 25H2 systems; it should not be assumed to describe a move from 26H1 to a future platform.

- Consider buying now if you specifically need a new Snapdragon X2-class Windows device and its capabilities suit your work. Treat the future update path as Microsoft’s stated direction, not a guarantee that 27H2 will arrive on a particular date.
- Wait for official details if you simply need a standard Windows 11 PC and have no particular need for 26H1 hardware. Eligible 24H2 and 25H2 PCs follow the mainstream 26H2 path, and waiting avoids choosing a device primarily on a forecast.
