Windows 11 version 26H2 became generally available on September 29, 2026, but Microsoft is rolling it out gradually. If your eligible PC running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 is offered the update, installing is reasonable for most home users—after checking the current known issues, particularly if you rely on older apps that decode AC-3 audio. Businesses should pilot it before a broad deployment.
What Windows 11 26H2 changes
26H2 is a broad feature release spanning productivity, security, accessibility, device management, and connectivity. It is not a single dramatic feature drop: Windows delivers capabilities through ongoing monthly updates, so many features associated with 26H2 may already be on a PC before the version upgrade. Microsoft’s feature inventory is aimed at IT professionals, and it cautions that availability can depend on configuration, account, hardware, policy, or staged delivery.
Start, taskbar, Search, and File Explorer
- Start: A redesigned menu includes a scrollable All apps view and category or grid layouts.
- Taskbar: Windows can place the taskbar at the bottom, top, left, or right, and offers a smaller taskbar option.
- Search: Search gains previews and improved handling of typos and partial app names.
- File Explorer: Listed improvements include speed, navigation, archive handling, and voice typing.
Security, administration, and recovery
- Smart App Control can be turned on or off without a clean Windows installation.
- Sysmon is built into Windows but is off by default. Administrator protection is also off by default and can be enabled through management policy.
- Windows supports credential-manager plugins for passkeys and adds API support for the post-quantum algorithms ML-KEM and ML-DSA.
- Microsoft lists settings backup and restore, point-in-time restore, Quick machine recovery, device association for Autopilot preparation, and policy-based removal of preinstalled apps. Availability and defaults differ between consumer and commercial settings.
Accessibility, input, and connectivity
The inventory lists improvements to Magnifier, Narrator, Braille Viewer, and Voice Access. Voice Access natural-language controls apply to supported Copilot+ PCs, so hardware eligibility and language availability matter. Bluetooth LE Audio and USB4 dock and hub improvements are also listed. Windows Update is intended to reduce restarts by combining eligible updates where possible.
Commercial defaults and a component that is not new to 26H2
Microsoft’s update history identifies Windows settings backup, app-specific taskbar actions, and File Explorer improvements as capabilities enabled by default on commercial devices; existing administrator policies remain in force. WMIC (Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line) is not a new 26H2 removal: Microsoft says it was removed from Windows 11 24H2 and later.

How the update reaches your PC
Microsoft announced general availability on September 29, 2026, and is phasing the rollout to eligible Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices. On an eligible PC, check Settings > Windows Update. Turning on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available opts into earlier availability where the device is eligible; it does not override a compatibility safeguard hold. Microsoft controls the offer and can delay it for devices with compatibility concerns. See the Windows 11 release-health page for current rollout and issue information.
For many PCs already on 24H2 or 25H2, 26H2 is a small enablement package because those releases share a servicing branch. Many of its capabilities have arrived through monthly updates; the package activates selected features and completes the change with a quick install and one restart. That description is not a guaranteed installation time for every device.

Is Windows 11 26H2 safe to install now?
As of October 2, 2026, Microsoft’s release-health page confirmed an issue where some applications that require AC-3 (Dolby Digital) decoding may fail to launch or close unexpectedly after updates released September 22, 2026, and later. Microsoft said it was working on a resolution. If you depend on older media applications or games that use AC-3, check the live status before updating.
The same page marked previously reported USB audio, domain trust, and desktop-loading issues as mitigated. Because known issues and mitigations can change, consult the release-health page close to the time you install rather than treating this dated status as permanent.

Should you install 26H2 now or wait?
| Situation | Practical choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Home user on an eligible 24H2 or 25H2 PC, with no dependency on affected apps | Install when Windows Update offers it, if you want the current feature release and support period. | The rollout is controlled by Microsoft, and a device subject to a safeguard hold may not receive the offer. |
| You rely on an older app that uses AC-3 decoding | Check the current release-health status and consider waiting until the issue is resolved or your app is confirmed unaffected. | Microsoft confirmed app launch and stability problems after updates from September 22, 2026, as of October 2. |
| You do not see the update | Confirm that the PC is on 24H2 or 25H2, check Windows Update, and wait for Microsoft’s offer. | Availability is phased, and a compatibility safeguard can delay it. Do not use unofficial upgrade files or bypasses to force installation. |
| Business, school, or other managed environment | Pilot on representative devices before expanding deployment. | Validate applications, hardware, infrastructure, and critical workflows; use existing management tools and update rings, and review enterprise-specific release-health details. |
How 26H2 affects Windows support
Installing a feature release starts a new support period for that release. Microsoft lists 24 months of support for Windows 11 26H2 Home and Pro, and 36 months for Enterprise and Education. These durations are edition-specific; installing on announcement day is not necessary for every user. Use your edition’s support period, compatibility needs, and—if managed—your organization’s validation process to decide when to move.
Prepare before installing
- Check the current release-health page for known issues and safeguards relevant to your apps and devices.
- If you want a separate copy of your files, Windows File History can back up to an external drive or network location. An external drive is optional, not a requirement for the update.
- For an organization, test representative devices and critical workflows before deploying broadly.
For Microsoft’s announcement and rollout details, see the September 29, 2026 Windows Experience Blog post. Release and support details are also listed in Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information and Windows 11 update history.
