1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMicrosoft released two Windows 11 version 26H1 Insider Preview builds on October 2, 2026: Build 28120.3151 for the Experimental (26H1) channel and Build 28020.3142 for the Beta (26H1) channel. Both add the Cloud rebuild recovery option and fix delayed updates when a file or folder is renamed only by changing letter case.
What changed in both builds
Cloud rebuild can reinstall Windows through Windows Update
Cloud rebuild is a Windows Recovery Environment option that downloads fresh Windows installation files through Windows Update and performs a clean reset. Microsoft says the workflow is designed to work even when Windows will not boot, giving you an operating-system recovery route without relying on a running desktop.
This feature is an operating-system recovery workflow; the release notes do not say that a physical recovery USB drive is required.
Case-only file and folder renames now appear promptly
Both release notes describe a fix for a file-management problem in which changing a name only by letter case—for example, changing Report.docx to report.docx—was not immediately reflected in local or cloud folder views. The corrected name should now appear properly.

Build and channel comparison
| Build | Insider channel | Build series | Positioning | Shared changes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 28120.3151 | Experimental (26H1) | 28100 series | Earlier ideas and features; greater change and bug risk | Cloud rebuild and the case-only rename display fix |
| 28020.3142 | Beta (26H1) | 28000 series | Comparatively steadier preview path, with features closer to release | Cloud rebuild and the case-only rename display fix |
The build numbers identify different development trains, not a simple quality ranking. Microsoft introduced the split on June 8, 2026, stating that Experimental would use the 28100 series while Beta would use 28000-series builds.
Beta 26H1 versus Experimental 26H1
Stability and bug tolerance
Choose Beta if you want the comparatively more stable preview and can accept pre-release software. Experimental is intended for users willing to encounter unfinished behavior while ideas are still being developed.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
How early features arrive
Experimental receives earlier development work. A feature seen there can change substantially, be removed, or never ship. Beta generally receives work after it has progressed further toward a release-ready form.
Hardware and milestone targeting
Windows 11 26H1 is a targeted milestone for specific silicon launching in 2026, not a blanket recommendation for every Windows 11 PC. Microsoft explicitly names Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Series devices. Verify that your hardware is eligible before selecting a 26H1 path.

Switching channels
Microsoft says Insiders can switch between Experimental (26H1) and Beta (26H1) from Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program. The June 8 announcement describes this as a simple in-place upgrade, so changing between these two paths does not require a clean Windows reinstall.
How to decide which build to install
- Check hardware eligibility. Confirm that your PC is one of the devices supported for the 26H1 milestone, especially if it uses a newly launched platform such as Snapdragon X2.
- Use Beta for a steadier preview. Select Beta (26H1) if you need fewer disruptive changes and prefer features closer to eventual release.
- Use Experimental for earlier development work. Select Experimental (26H1) only if you can tolerate bugs, redesigns, feature removal, and other instability.
- Keep the default Windows core unless needed. Microsoft generally recommends leaving the default Windows core selected in Advanced options unless you have a specific reason to target 26H1.
- Switch in Settings when appropriate. Open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program and follow the available channel option. Microsoft characterizes this switch as in-place rather than a clean installation.
What these releases do not establish
- No authoritative performance benchmark is provided for either exact build, so the build numbers should not be used to claim faster battery life, gaming, application performance, or startup.
- The shared fixes do not mean every Windows 11 PC is eligible for 26H1; the milestone is targeted at specific 2026 silicon.
- Experimental availability does not guarantee that an included feature will reach the final Windows release.
Build identities at a glance
28120.3151 is the Experimental (26H1) preview. 28020.3142 is the Beta (26H1) preview. Both were published on October 2, 2026, and both contain the Cloud rebuild recovery workflow plus the correction for case-only file and folder rename display.
