Yes. Windows 11 version 24H2 reached broad availability, but as of October 3, 2026, it is no longer the best update target for most people. Home and Pro users are being directed to version 25H2, and eligible PCs on 24H2 or 25H2 can move to 26H2. The right choice depends on what Windows Update offers your PC and, for managed devices, your organization’s deployment plan.
What does “broadly available” mean for Windows 11 24H2?
Microsoft’s rollout has two stages. During a gradual rollout, the update may reach eligible PCs at different times; compatibility concerns can also trigger safeguard holds that prevent a particular device from being offered the update. A normal rollout is the broad release to eligible devices at the same time, usually when a version reaches general availability, according to Microsoft Support’s KB5124010 documentation.
So broad availability describes the rollout stage, not a promise that every PC will receive 24H2 immediately. Hardware eligibility, compatibility holds and update policies can still determine whether it appears on an individual device.
Should you install 24H2 now, or move to 25H2 or 26H2?
For an unmanaged Home or Pro PC, follow the version Windows Update offers rather than trying to force an older release. Microsoft says these devices will receive the 25H2 update automatically. Its September 29, 2026 Windows Experience Blog announcement also says 26H2 is available for eligible devices already running 24H2 or 25H2.

| Choice | What it means now | How it is delivered or managed |
|---|---|---|
| Stay on 24H2 | Home and Pro support ends October 13, 2026; Enterprise and Education support ends October 12, 2027. (Microsoft Learn, Windows release-health documentation) | For unmanaged Home and Pro PCs, Microsoft is directing users to 25H2. Organizations can manage deployment through tools such as Autopatch, Microsoft 365 admin center, update rings and policies. |
| Move to 25H2 | Microsoft says unmanaged Home and Pro devices will receive this update. A specific support-end date is not stated in the cited Microsoft material. | Check Windows Update for the offer. Organizations should use their deployment controls and validate compatibility. |
| Move to 26H2 | Microsoft announced availability for eligible PCs running 24H2 or 25H2 on September 29, 2026. A specific support-end date is not stated in the cited announcement. | Microsoft delivers it as an enablement package: much of the code is already present, so installation can be a small download followed by one restart. |
For 24H2 Home and Pro, the approaching support deadline makes moving to a supported newer release the practical choice. Once support ends, Microsoft says the device no longer receives fixes for known issues, time-zone updates, technical support, or monthly security and preview updates that include protections against the latest threats. Newer releases reset the support clock for their supported editions, but the specific end dates for 25H2 and 26H2 are not established in the cited material.
Check for the update offered to your PC
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- If the update is offered, select Download and install. You can choose when to restart or postpone it.
If the expected version is not offered, do not assume that broad availability means your PC is entitled to install it immediately. Eligibility, a safeguard hold or an organization’s update policy may affect what appears.

For organization-managed PCs
Coordinate upgrades through the organization’s normal deployment process rather than treating an individual Windows Update offer as approval for a broad rollout. Administrators should validate applications and drivers, account for safeguard holds, and check the virtualization, Remote Desktop, USB audio and ARM-related issues documented in Microsoft’s release-health information.
What 24H2 issues should you check before deploying it?
Microsoft’s release-health page lists the following issues and statuses. Several entries are already mitigated or resolved, so check the current guidance and available updates for the affected device rather than assuming each problem remains active.

- Virtual desktops: Some environments may show a black screen or fail to load the desktop after sign-in. Microsoft marks this issue mitigated.
- Domain-joined devices: Some may lose a secure trust relationship. Microsoft marks the issue mitigated.
- USB Audio Class 1.0: Some devices may fail to start or lose multichannel audio. Microsoft marks the issue mitigated and notes an out-of-band fix for some symptoms.
- Remote Desktop Services: Instability after the September 2026 security update is marked resolved by KB5129195.
- Hyper-V Linux virtual machines: Problems with Plan9 host-folder shares are marked resolved by KB5129195.
- ARM devices: Teams and the new Outlook could fail to launch when older updates were installed. Microsoft marks this resolved by the September 8, 2026 updates.
- Desktop personalization: Desktop background and mouse-personalization resets are marked resolved by the September 8, 2026 updates.
- Defender notification: Incorrect “Microsoft Defender Antivirus is turned off” alerts are marked resolved by Defender update 4.18.26080.4, released September 17, 2026.
Before a broad organizational deployment, install the latest cumulative and out-of-band fixes available for the device, then reassess compatibility in the relevant workload. A fix marked resolved is not a substitute for checking that the affected machine has the update that resolves it.

No purchase is required for the digitally delivered Windows update. A boxed license, USB installer or replacement PC is not part of the normal update path described here; availability depends on device eligibility and rollout status.
