1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows 11 version 24H2 is an operating-system release; Copilot+ PC is a hardware category. Installing 24H2 does not automatically give a computer Recall, on-device Live Captions translation, Cocreator, or every other new AI feature. Those experiences generally require a Copilot+ PC with a neural processing unit (NPU) rated above 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS), plus the right updates, language, region and policy settings.
What Windows 11 24H2 actually is
Microsoft began releasing Windows 11 version 24H2, also called the Windows 11 2024 Update, on October 1, 2024. It is a full operating-system swap rather than a small enablement package. Eligible PCs running version 22H2 or 23H2 need the May 2024 non-security preview update, or a later update, before they can move to 24H2.
The release is phased. Microsoft can delay an offer when telemetry identifies a compatibility problem, placing a safeguard hold on a model, driver or application. Consequently, a PC that is eligible on paper may not see 24H2 in Windows Update at the same time as another PC.
Windows 11 24H2 and Copilot+ are different labels
24H2 describes the software version. Copilot+ PC describes a hardware tier. Microsoft defines a Copilot+ PC as a Windows 11 AI PC with an NPU capable of more than 40 TOPS. The NPU handles sustained AI workloads more efficiently than a conventional CPU or GPU, enabling features that Microsoft reserves for, or optimizes for, this class of device.

A standard Windows 11 Pro computer can run 24H2 without being a Copilot+ PC. Microsoft explicitly says Copilot+ experiences are not available on all Windows 11 Pro PCs.
| Question | Regular Windows 11 24H2 PC | Copilot+ PC running 24H2 |
|---|---|---|
| What identifies it? | The installed Windows release is version 24H2. | Version 24H2 plus qualifying hardware, including an NPU above 40 TOPS. |
| Core Windows updates | Receives the normal 24H2 operating-system and security updates when eligible. | Receives those updates and may receive Copilot+ experiences. |
| AI feature access | Some AI features may work, but Copilot+ exclusives are not guaranteed. | Designed for features such as Recall (preview), Click to Do, Cocreator, improved Windows Search and on-device Live Captions translation, subject to availability conditions. |
| NPU requirement | No 40-TOPS NPU requirement for the operating system itself. | More than 40 TOPS, according to Microsoft’s Copilot+ definition. |
| Support term | Determined by the Windows edition and release, not by the Copilot+ badge. | The same Windows servicing term as the installed edition. |
Which features create the biggest divide?
Recall (preview)
Recall periodically captures encrypted snapshots of the active screen, processing them locally so you can search what you previously viewed. Snapshots are stored on the PC and protected with BitLocker, TPM-linked keys, Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security and a virtualization-based security enclave.
Recall is a preview experience, not a universal 24H2 feature. Its availability depends on the device’s silicon, required updates, supported language and region. An organization can also prevent snapshots from being saved or control retention, storage limits and deletion through policy.
Live Captions translation
Microsoft’s 24H2 IT feature documentation lists Live Captions translation support for 44 languages. Translation availability still depends on the supported language combination, device capability, region and the installed release of the feature.

Windows Studio Effects, Cocreator and Click to Do
Windows Studio Effects uses AI processing for camera and microphone enhancements. Cocreator in Paint can generate or transform artwork from your input, and Click to Do provides contextual actions on selected on-screen content. Microsoft groups these experiences with Copilot+ capabilities, so a normal 24H2 installation should not be treated as a guarantee that they will appear.
Improved Windows Search
On supported Copilot+ hardware, Windows Search can use on-device AI to understand more natural descriptions of files, settings and other content. The experience can still vary with indexing state, language, region, staged rollout and administrator controls.
Why two PCs both labeled “24H2” can look different
Version number alone does not determine the feature set. Microsoft combines several gates:
- Hardware eligibility: Copilot+ features require the appropriate NPU and other security capabilities.
- Controlled Feature Rollout: Microsoft enables features gradually after monitoring reliability.
- Safeguard holds: A known driver, firmware or application conflict can block an update or feature.
- Language and region: AI services are not released for every language or country at the same time.
- Required updates: The operating system, Microsoft Store components and individual apps may each need an update.
- Organization policy: Group Policy and mobile-device-management settings can disable or limit selected experiences.
- Silicon differences: Two laptops with the same Windows edition may have different processors, NPUs and security capabilities.
This is why the absence of Recall or another AI tool does not, by itself, indicate that 24H2 installed incorrectly.

How Recall’s privacy controls work
Recall is designed around local storage and local processing rather than sending the snapshot history to a remote service by default. The snapshots are encrypted, tied to the device’s security hardware and gated by Windows Hello protections. The virtualization-based security enclave adds an isolated security boundary for sensitive operations.
Users can delete snapshots. On managed PCs, administrators can set whether snapshots are saved, how long they are retained, how much storage they may use and whether the feature is available. These controls matter in workplaces, schools and shared computers where a screen history could expose confidential information. A Copilot+ badge therefore indicates capability, not an obligation to enable Recall.

For Windows 11 Home and Pro, Microsoft lists version 24H2 updates through October 13, 2026. Its lifecycle table shows the release period ending October 14, 2026 in Pacific Time. The apparent one-day difference is a time-zone presentation issue, not an additional support period.
Microsoft’s servicing model provides 24 months of support for each annual Home or Pro release and 36 months for Enterprise and Education editions. Microsoft says unmanaged eligible Home and Pro devices will receive Windows 11 25H2 automatically; managed devices remain subject to their organization’s deployment policy.

What to do if your 24H2 PC lacks an AI feature
- Open Settings > System > About and verify the Windows edition, processor and installed version. In Settings > Windows Update, install available cumulative, driver and Microsoft Store updates.
- Check whether the model is advertised as a Copilot+ PC and whether its NPU exceeds 40 TOPS. A 24H2 label alone is insufficient.
- Confirm the feature’s supported language and region. Change neither merely to bypass a safeguard hold; availability can be intentionally staged.
- On a work or school device, ask the administrator whether Group Policy or mobile-device-management rules disable the feature.
- If Windows Update does not offer 24H2, look for a safeguard hold caused by a driver, firmware or application. Updating that component through the PC maker may be required before Microsoft offers the release.
Should you buy a Copilot+ laptop?
Choose one when on-device AI features are a specific priority and you are comfortable checking their supported language, region and preview status. The NPU can also provide a platform for future local AI features, but Microsoft’s 40-TOPS threshold does not promise that every future feature will run on every Copilot+ model.
A conventional Windows 11 laptop remains the more straightforward choice when you mainly need Office, browsers, development tools, games or existing desktop applications. It can run 24H2 and receive the same edition-based security servicing without carrying the premium hardware requirement for Copilot+ features.
Before buying, verify the exact processor and NPU specification, Windows edition, camera and microphone hardware, available storage for local AI data, and whether the feature you care about is generally available or still a preview. Do not buy solely because a listing says “Windows 11 24H2”; that wording identifies the operating system, not the Copilot+ tier.
The practical verdict
Windows 11 24H2 is one release with multiple possible experiences. The operating-system update, the Copilot+ hardware tier, Microsoft’s staged delivery system and organization policies all affect what a user sees. Treat “24H2” as the software baseline and “Copilot+ PC” as an additional hardware qualification; that distinction explains most of the apparent inconsistency.
