Windows 10’s standard support ended on October 14, 2025. Ordinary Windows 10 PCs still run, but they no longer receive regular feature, security, or quality updates from Microsoft. Eligible, enrolled consumer devices can receive limited security updates through October 12, 2027; those updates do not add features.

What Windows 10’s end of support means

Microsoft says Windows 10 PCs will continue to function after support ends. The change is that standard support no longer supplies feature updates, security and reliability fixes, or general technical assistance. The end date for mainstream Windows 10 support was October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s end-of-support guidance.

This date applies to mainstream Windows 10 support, not every specialized edition. Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) and Long-Term Servicing Branch (LTSB) releases have separate lifecycle policies; check the specific edition’s lifecycle rather than assuming the October 2025 date applies. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 version 22H2 release-health page.

What Extended Security Updates provide

Extended Security Updates (ESU) are a time-limited security bridge for eligible, enrolled devices. Microsoft says consumer ESU provides critical and important security updates through October 12, 2027, regardless of when a device enrolls. Enrollment choices and terms can vary by region, so confirm the options on Microsoft’s localized end-of-support page and in Windows Settings.

ESU does not continue Windows 10’s feature roadmap. Microsoft excludes new features, customer-requested nonsecurity updates, and design-change requests from the program. ESU also does not include general technical support. Microsoft documents these limits in its Windows 10 ESU program documentation.

Who the consumer program is for

Microsoft describes consumer ESU for personal-use devices running Windows 10 version 22H2 in most Windows markets. Organization-managed devices and devices covered by enterprise licensing are excluded from this consumer program. Eligibility and enrollment options may differ by location; Microsoft’s page and the device’s Settings screen are the places to verify what is available for a particular PC.

Enrollment options and the preparation package

Microsoft lists three consumer enrollment choices: syncing PC settings at no additional cost, redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or paying a one-time $30 USD plus applicable tax. These are Microsoft-listed program terms, not a guarantee that every choice is available in every region.

Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 bulletin describes KB5126256 as an ESU licensing preparation package. Installing it prepares licensing and enrollment components; it does not itself enroll a device or provide ESU updates. See Microsoft’s KB5126256 support bulletin.

Choose what to do with your PC

The right next step depends on whether the PC can move to Windows 11, whether consumer ESU is available for it, and whether replacing it makes sense for your needs.

Path When it fits What to know
Upgrade to Windows 11 The PC meets Windows 11 hardware requirements and you want to move to the newer operating system. Microsoft says eligible Windows 10 PCs can upgrade for free; not all PCs qualify. Check the requirements and device eligibility before proceeding.
Enroll in consumer ESU The PC is a personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 device that qualifies in your region, and you need time before upgrading or replacing it. ESU supplies limited security updates through October 12, 2027, not features or general technical support. Enrollment terms vary by region.
Replace the PC The current device is ineligible for Windows 11, or replacing it better suits your needs. A Windows 11 PC is an option Microsoft identifies for devices that cannot upgrade. Replacement is not necessary solely because Windows 10 stops receiving standard support if another suitable path meets your needs.

Check Windows 11 eligibility

Use Microsoft’s Windows 10 support and upgrade guidance to review Windows 11 requirements and available upgrade steps. Confirm that your particular PC is eligible; the free upgrade offer does not mean every Windows 10 computer can install Windows 11.

If you need more time

If your PC qualifies for consumer ESU, enrollment can extend security coverage while you decide what to do next. Check the available enrollment option in Settings and Microsoft’s regional guidance. ESU is a bridge, not a substitute for deciding on a longer-term operating system plan.

Can antivirus replace Windows security updates?

No. Antivirus can help detect or block some threats, but it does not supply missing Windows security fixes. Microsoft warns that antivirus alone is not enough to replace regular operating-system security updates. If you keep using Windows 10, consider an eligible ESU enrollment or a supported operating system rather than relying on antivirus as the only protection.

What about Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10?

Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 will continue to function and receive security updates through October 10, 2028. That application support does not restore Windows 10 feature updates, operating-system security updates, or general Windows technical support.
