As of October 2, 2026, Joey Ortiz was expected to be on the Milwaukee Brewers’ NLDS roster, but the team had not confirmed the final roster or that he would play. Manager Pat Murphy said Ortiz was “progressing in the right direction,” following earlier reports of encouraging MRI results and cautious monitoring of several injury concerns.
What is Ortiz’s NLDS status?
The latest available update, published October 2, said Murphy expected Ortiz to be on the NLDS roster. That points to expected availability, not confirmation that Ortiz had been placed on the final roster, was fully healthy, or had appeared in a game. The report was published by CBS Sports/RotoWire and attributed the update to MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy: CBS Sports/RotoWire’s October 2 report.
One day earlier, MLB said the Brewers were optimistic Ortiz would be ready for Game 1 after encouraging MRI results. At that time, the scheduled opener was Saturday, October 3, at 7:30 p.m. CT against the Padres at American Family Field. That was pregame schedule information published October 1, not confirmation of Ortiz’s participation: MLB’s October 1 postseason FAQ.
What injuries were the Brewers monitoring?
The concern was not limited to Ortiz’s right knee. MLB’s September 30 injury update listed a bruised right knee, a sore oblique and a groin issue. Murphy said the club would be careful with Ortiz during the bye week and acknowledged, “There’s still concern.” MLB’s September 30 Brewers injuries and roster moves update

How did the outlook change?
| Report date | Update | What it established |
|---|---|---|
| September 27 | MRI results described as “all good”; knee bruise and abdominal swelling noted. | Positive imaging update, with monitoring and a precautionary decision to hold Ortiz out of the regular-season finale. |
| September 30 | Injury listing included bruised right knee, sore oblique and groin issue; Murphy said there was still concern. | The Brewers remained cautious during the bye week. |
| October 1 | MLB reported the club was optimistic Ortiz would be ready for Game 1. | Positive expectation, not final roster confirmation. |
| October 2 | Murphy was reported as saying Ortiz was “progressing in the right direction” and expected on the NLDS roster. | The clearest expectation of availability in the updates available by that date, still short of confirmation that Ortiz was active or had played. |
What should fans take from the updates?
- Availability looked likely: By October 2, the Brewers’ public outlook was positive and Ortiz was expected on the NLDS roster.
- There was still a health caveat: The team had been monitoring knee, abdominal or oblique, and groin concerns, and had explicitly described itself as cautious.
- Expected is not confirmed: The cited pre-series reports do not establish the final roster decision or whether Ortiz played.
